Hello Tonnaparrots. Welcome to the group. Is there any reason why you need to know the sex or are you just curious? Steve n Misty

Hello Louiesdad and Louie. What a great story. I love to hear of people rehoming and rescuing older birds. I would love to see a video of Louie banking his money:) Have you considered getting him a job at the treasury ? It seems he would be good at running a bank:lol: Steve n Misty

Hello Bryan. How heartbreaking it must have been to have lost your friends. It is so good that you now feel able to invite a young Grey back into your life:) We look forward to your writing about your TAG. Very best wishes from Misty CAG and me. Steve n Misty

Please please don't clip his wings. I think it is a terrible thing to do. Being able to fly is central to being a bird. Clipping risks all kinds of psychological problems. Once Greys are past about three there is no easy way to tell how old it is and there is no simple way to tell its sex either. The avian vet you take him to when you have bought him can sex your Grey and may be able to give an idea of age. Sex doesn't really matter unless you intend to breed. The behavior of Greys to humans is not really affected by it's sex. Likewise as they live so long age is not very important either if the bird is well socialized. It is important that you realize that they don't like being handled or touched except by humans they regard as a friend and it may take a few weeks for him to realize you are his friend. Even then you should never force yourself on him. He will let you know when he is happy to be touched. If he bites hard you will only have yourself to blame. Thank you for taking on an older parrot. I think you are in for a wonderful experience. Steve n Misty

Post edited by: Mistyparrot, at: 2009/03/12 13:51

Keep Molly. According to my dictionary it is derived from Count Mollien (1758–1850), a French statesman. But you will have to be suitably respectful as he is an aristocrat. Steve n Misty

Misty is only interested in it when I am holding it. Otherwise he won't bother with it. He is not interested in my phone although as a general rule whatever I have in my hand is his. That's where he learned the phrase "it's not for you" Steve n Misty

Post edited by: Mistyparrot, at: 2009/03/11 17:49

Misty has taken a shine for my iPodtouch ! If he spots me playing with it he zooms down on me and tries to snatch it from me whilst saying "Its not for you" Should I turn him in to the Parrot Police? Steve n Misty

I share my morning cereal with Misty but I always use soya milk substitute. I use salt free cereals and add crushed fruit of various kinds. He loves this and so do I. In fact because he likes so share all my meals i always buy food with him in mind ! I think he has improved my diet no end Steve n Misty

Welcome Msvoluptous . You seem to be an ideal Grey adopter. You have a good sense of humor and that has to be essential  Steve n Misty

Dan, I always leave a low light on for Misty. He has demonstrated to me that he can see well enough to navigate. Steve n Misty

Misty, my six year old GAG is always out of his cage except for bed time. A few weeks ago he decided that he preferred not to sleep in his cage any more. He always tells me when it is bed time by saying "Bedtime" this would normally be at the end of the day just after I have switched off the TV or music player. He is quite insistent and will go on until I had put him in his cage and turned out the lights and retired myself. I would carry him to his cage and put him in. Then a few weeks ago he started to object! He would wait until I had got him to the cage door and the would fly off onto his perch made from apple tree branches. I had to resort to carrying him over in near total darkness to put him in. I confess in the end I let him have his way. So now at bed time he will say the word and fly up to his perch. As I leave the room and turn out the lights I wish him good night and he replies with a quitet "bye bye". In the morning he often greets me with "Hi babe" and then he asks for his "water" which like my morning coffee must be hot ! He has been well behaved with this arrangement and has caused no problems. Strangely he will still let me cage him if he has been bad! I never put him in for more that a few minutes. He will say "be good boy..can I come out" He is irresistible

Thanks guys. Its Mistys own composition. I should register him with the PRS. Steve n Misty

A short vid of Misty saying "hello" and then exchanging contact calls with me. We can go on for ages with the calls with misty whistling and then waiting for my response. He then makes a change and again listens for my response. We would love to hear the calls of the other Greys on this forum. Steve n Misty

Why don't I ever see my grey drink water?
Mistyparrot replied to PekingeseMama's topic in The GREY Lounge
As I have written here before, I discovered that Misty has a taste for hot water after he kept trying to steal my hot coffee Now he starts the day demanding "water" first thing in the morning. He gets quite cross if I dare to offer him cold water. I give it to him in a glass tumbler and he gulps it down. Although he always has water available on his stand during the day he prefers to come pester me for water in his glass. He does not always drink it, he likes to rattle his beak around the rim or dink the side of the glass. He does pass the water out. He has a good and varied diet and is in very good health (TW). A little known "fact". At one time traders importing African Greys from Africa had the tragically erroneous belief that they drank no water so they were forced to endure many tortuous days at sea with the inevitable suffering. I would go see a psychiatrist to find out why you would want to tie yourself to a demanding feathered egomaniac for the rest of your life:woohoo: Once you understand that you have a Grey Parrot sized hole in your psyche you are ready to commit or be commited:laugh: That said, the rewards can be quite profound and like every one else on this forum I have no regrets. Perhaps boings look a bit snake like to them. It pays them to be cautious in the wild and they are still basically wild animals with all the instincts that wild animals have. Do you play with it yourself so she can see it is both harmless and interesting to you? With my Misty he cannot resist playing with my toys. Especially if I make him think it is MY TOY and he can't have it  Steve n Misty

I suspect the main reason is A because they like to forage on the ground so grey is a better camouflage. The other reason is they would not be African Greys if they were any other colour. Also If they were American they would be called American Grays {Characters-0002007B} Steve n Misty
