1. I guess she could be she loves broccoli and goes nuts over leafy veggies like romaine lettace and beet greens she gets eggs with the shells twice a week and little bits of cheese through out the week for a treat I also cook sweet potatos mixed with turnip and carrots and she eats fairly well I even scrape cuddle bone on he pellets and seeds. But your right she still could be defecient in something. I think I'l see if it happens again and if it does I'll tae her to the vet. Shes due soon anyway so a little early won't hurt. Thank - you everyone for your replys I think I'll at least phone the vet in the morning and see what she advises.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/19 05:26
2. I notice after Tyco took her morning nap that her flight feathers where drooping. I've heard this can be a sign of illness I din't last long and within a few mimutes she was back to playing and attacking her toy and telling them no don't do that. do you think she may be hiding some kind of ilness she eating ok and she playing and chatting up a storm does anyone elses Grey droop their flights when they first wake up or do you think I should take her to the vet. Or at least give my Vet a call and see if she thinks I should bring her in. Tyco is also starting to learn to fly finally and she will fly across the room 2 or 3 times a day do you think her wings might just be tired so she's relaxing them a bit.
3. I have read that artical before but I do find it very interesting I don't have a Timnah but I do have a Cag. Tyco was at one time very afraid of new and different things When I first got her she was like that but over this last year Of introducing her to many new things 2 cages tons of toy and different rooms in the house. I have found that she now excepts things without any fear. I can give her a new toy and she takes to it imediately. She see new things on a daily basis and I think this is the way to teach your Grey that new things are not nessesarily dangerous. Tyco now takes my word for it if I tell her that iits safe and it for her she has no proublems with it. I think that new Cag Owners should introduce many different things to their baby's take them different places and show them allot of change this kind of upbringing i think would help a lot of Cag to be less nervous and more excepting of new things. Just my opinion.
4. If there is no danger of cats or dogs and he only does it when you are close to his cage then I don't see the harm he just wants to be with you. He loves you and wants to help you read the paper and eat your breakfast. My birds do this also.
5. It is the time of year when allot of Greys start their molt but I would keep an eye on George anyway don't make a fuss though if he is you don't want to make a scene or he may not want to stop just like any unwanted behavour ignore the bad and praise the good. Like Dan said it could be just a molt
6. Let me know how Tanner does with the approach you are taking Gizmo also love me to sit with him he gets a close as he can when I sit beside his cage. he loves to reach through the bars and tug on my shirt. When I leave Gizmo also squawks and then says comere comere. He likes to play tug of war with his news paper toy or an old green towel that he seems to like he's so funny when he attacks his toy he talks to them and say owy owy owy like hes hurting it and thats what its supposed to say. He also like to put his beak through the bars and say kiss kiss and when I give him a kiss on his beak he makes a loud kissing noise like he's kissing me back. I don't know if he's ever going to come out of his cage he's been in there for so long 3 yrs is a very long time without love and affection he doesn't know any other way to be except in his cage. I don't want to give up on him because he's so sweet and he's just craving interaction with someone he just so afraid to come out. I don't know what todo with him. mabie I'll just open his door every morning like I do the other birds and if he watches them coming out everyday and playing and haveing fun he will want to also. I just don't know. I did notice when he does come out he flaps his wings like crazy on top of his cage. It doesn't take long before he's out of breath he's very out of shape from lack of excersize.
7. Thats nice that you've decided to let your Teils have a clutch. I would love to see the babies. you should see if you can get a few lessons in handfeeding the babies just in case the parent reject them or hurt the babie sometime not often the parent birds can mutalate the babies like biting noff toe and such if that happens you will have to pull the babies and hand feed them its not that hard to learn to hand feed but you should see if someone can show you how like your vet or a breeder or even a petstore that takes in unweaned babies. also read as much as you can about it before the babies come. I had a baby teil dropped on my door step when it was 3 weeks old. I hand fed it and weaned it. I didn't know anything but I learned rather quickly/ its not difficult but you have to make sure the formula is thhe right tempature and how to hold the baby so it will take the food. See if you can find a bird breeder to give you a few lessons.
8. I don't know if that would work for Gizmo or not the only toy he really love is a toy I made for him I put some shower curtain rings together to make a chain and then every 4th ring I put a couple sheets of rolled up news paper and hung it in his cage He absolutly loves that thing he ripps and pulls and fights with the news paper all day long he has a great time shreading it. That and 1 wooden block toy are the only toys he plays with he has a wicker basket full of foot toys, a boing a knotted rope, and a swing that hang from the ceiling next to his cage and he has four other toys in his cage that he doesn't pay any attention too so I don't think seeing toy's on the play top are going to entice him. mabie I should take the News paper toy out and hang it from the ceiling next to his boing and knotted rope toy. mabie that would intice him to try out his boing. If he doesn't venture out tomorrow I will try that mabie, you never know he may just have a little fun.
9. That's a very heart felt poem I trully hope that I out live everyone of my rescues so they never have to go through being rehomed again. I want then to only know joy and happyness for the rest of their lives.
10. Gizmo is wondering what is happening I think I've moved him and his cage to the dining room and haven't really done any touching or tryed to step him up or nothing I have just been sitting with him and letting him adjust to his new spot. There is allot more activity where he is . He can see and watch sprout and Raja playing and watch the tv with us. So I'm backing off a little hoping that he will miss all the attention and be more willing to come out of his cage on his own when I open the cage door. I can tell he missing it because he comes right over to sit with me when I come and sit beside his cage. He grabs the sleeve to my shirt and pulls it like he's trying to pull my hand in closer I m going to just leave him for today and then tomorrow I will open his door and see if he wants to come out and play
11. No work for me this is my week end I don't go back to work until Wed. at 5:00 pm Like I said I work Wed. Fri,and Sat. night thats it. 3 days a week 6 hours a shift thats enough I don't need or want to work any more than that these days. I really want to retire but I can't afford it yet. Mabie when my youngest leaves home I'll be able too she's 13 so another 5 or 6 years should do it.
12. I don't know if the smell means they are starting puberty or not I never had an Amazon baby but I know when they are affectionate all of a sudden you will get that smell. I like the smell some people just hate it.
13. I don't know of any in the states but I just wanter to say last year when I sold my house big house in mission where I raised my family and down sized for my retirement I too wanted to make sure my birds where going to be looked after should anything happen to me. I figure I will probubly out live my smaller birds but Tyco Fergie and now Gizmo its not likely. So I talked to my children about it and Amber will take Fergie and Tuesday will take Tyco and Gizmo. So at least I know my birds will go to my girls who they already know and love. I have put a trust fund aside for their care and any vet bills that they might have like yearly well bird check-ups a such. Isn't it funny how we worry about them even after we are gone.
14. My birds love to chew on lilac trss branches the chew all the bark off first and then chew the rest into bits I have a huge lilac tree in my yard. and I cut big and small branches depending on which birds are getting them my cockateils I try to cut branchs that have lost of off shoots and I the main branch in a bucket of rocks to hold it up and its like a tree with no leaves they just love it the chew and play I hang toys from it and when they finsh chewing all the branches up I just get them a new one You could do the same thing with a larger bird safe tree with larger branches mabie with three or four branches as the trunk that would make a wonderful play stand you could hang toys fron the smaller branches and your birds would have something to chew as well as play on. I don't have anyplace to put something that big right now but if I did I think I would.
15. I have a female I can tell you what she is like I don't know to much about the males but I've heard the males can get quite agressive at times when they are hormonal. When Fergie is hormonal all she wants is pets an cuddles and she seems to nyot be able to get enough. She is 11 yrs old now and still as clownish and playful as she was when she was young. When they are molting they can be cranky it helps if you give them lots of baths and help by pinching the tips of their pins if they will allow it. Fergie last molt was very heavy and she was just miserable she didn't want to be touch or nothing she just wanted to be left alone she made that very clear. When an Amazon goes into display mode like fanning their tails and wings and eyes pinning it means stay away don't come near me or I'll bite you. Many times this may look like they're playing but don't push it or you'll get a very good bite. Fergie hates men because she was abused by one when she was young and If there is a man in the house she will diplay but at the same time she will say hello whatcha doin ah and its just a ploy to get the man to come closer so she can bite him she's very smart. She is also stubborn she loves to get on top of my kitchen cupboard and chew on them. She knows she's not allowed but she will have me climbing up and down off a chair for a couple hours getting her down giveing her a timeout then I let her out and the first place she goes is back up there again. She eventually gets tired of it. I think its more that she is playful more than stubborn really she turns it into a game its frustrating to me but she's having a great time. I don't really know what else to tell you they are wonderful birds most of the time they can be very loud at time and very frustating at times but you can't help but love them to death they are funny and sweet and love cuddles and pets once they learn just how good they feel. Amazon also have a smell not all the time more during hormonal times I've learned to really like the smell some people don't like it at all to me its like a sweet musk smell you will notice it probubly soon if you haven't already. Like I said I like it but lots of people don't.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/17 05:08
16. Copper sounds like such a fun little guy I just love Amazons they're the best even though they can get very noisy at time and usually at the wrong time they are allot of fun and can be taught todo so may things they are very trainable. Fergie can roll over and play dead just like a dog it funny to watch she also likes to lay on her back and juggle a toy. She doesn't like it when I'm on the phone just like a little kid she start screaming and making it very hard to talk I end up haveing to go to the farthest room away from her just so I can have a conversation.
17. Thats so wonderful he sounds Like he going to be a great companion. I think he's going to be allot easier than Gizmo just because Tanner is still a baby so he still curious about everything. when they're young they are definatly allot more trainable than they are after a few years have passed. Now that I have Gizmo out of Quarintine I am taking things a bit slower. he's in a whole new enviroment again so I'm going to just let him be for a day or two and let him adjust. There is allot more activity around him now than there was before and I don't want to scare him.
18. I think everyones going to be fine with him I moved him into the Dining room and Fergie my Amazon had to go check him out. Gizmo was on top of his cage and Fergie landed on it. Gizmo was on one side and Fergie was on the other and neither one made a move towards the other they just sat there and looked at each other. I thought that was a very good sign they where only 3 feet apart. Gizmo does not seem to have an aggresive nature so I think that will go a long way in helping my birds accept him the only one I may have a little trouble with is Sprout my Green cheecked Conure. he thinks he can take on the world he picks fights with everyone the silly little bird he must think he's the size of an Eagle or something the way he acts sometimes. I think I'm going to slow things down with Gizmo for a little bit now that he's out in the open I'm going to just let him relax and check out his new space. I don't want him to regress so I think a few days of just checking out the other birds and seeing what new around him would be the way to go right now. he seems a little nevous and I don't want to scare him anymore than he already is.
19. Got yourself a little baseball fan there. What a sweety he's so cute whith that spoon on his head likes his breaky to he's going to grow into a big strong boy Thanks for shareing I just love birdy pictures
20. I just got a Severe Macaw I Keep him in the dining room which is 2 rooms away from my cockateils and African Grey I try to bath my birds at least three times a week and I have 2 large airfilters that run continuiously I don't want anybody getting sick from bird dander in my house. I like Judy live in the middle of no where so I don't have to worry about my neighbours complaining. There is at least 3 acres between me and my neighbour and he has cows and chickens so I don't think he will be complaining about a few bird. The Steller Jays outside are way louder than my birds could ever hope to be.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/16 22:38
21. What great pictures it sounds like Tanners going to be easy he is obviously so happy to be home. Im cant wait to compare notes he seems to be so much like Gizmo in every way iso strange how 2 birds canbe so much alike after I manage to get Gizmo to step up the first place he heads is for my shoulder. He just love to ride around up there and it looks as though Tanner likes to be on someones shoulder also. Mabie you should try Tanner on walnuts also they are Gizmos favorite treat he will do anything for a walnut including come out of his cage to get it. I buy the halves and pieces and just give him a a piece when he does something really good like come out of his cage or stepping up when I ask I also give him toms and tons of praise. I doènt like to give to many treats for rewards Idonèt want him to do thing just because hhe gets a treat for it so walnuts are only given for something very special. anyway Ièm am so happy Tanner is finaly at home where he belongs He seems to be very happy abput the whole thing also. Even though its new and exciting for him and hes a little nervous Im sure hes thinking yes I did it I got myself into a new home:laugh:
22. Well Gizmo I starting to get the Idea that being away from his cage is not neseseraly a bad thing. Every day Iève been taking him away from his cage. He sits on my shoulder and I walk around the house with him today was the longesy I kept him away and he relaxed and enjoyed it I made waffles for my daughter while he was on my shoulder and I gave him a peice which he ate quite happily. Its still takes him a few minutes to get him to step up from his cage but thanks to Ericas advice about how she ges Cooper to step up I do the same with Gizmo it works like a charm. Gizmo also never bites me at all anymore even though I push him a little trying to get him to enjoy life he never get angry. I must say hes very easy going and puts up with allot. I think he really enjoys it when heès away from his cage its just hes been in it so long hesa little nervous about it. Ive got him to eat a few vegetables now the waffle I made for the birds I put snap peas in it and he just loved it I find if I hide his veggies he eats them no problem but if I just put them in his bowl he wont touch them. Oh Yes before I go I wanted to tell everyone that his blood work came back A1 heès got nothing at all wrong with him his calcium was on the low end of mormal and so was a few other thing in the vitimin department but thats no big deal a good diet will fix him up in a hurry and its not like he was deficient just on the low side of normal so that was great news. at least I donèt have to worry about my birds getting sick and thats the main thing he can join the flock without fear.
23. I just thought of something Im not going to be here for Tanners home comeing. I have to go to work today. I have to leave the house no later than 3:30pm so I can be at work for 4:00 I really need to change my shedule I miss out on all the fun Darn darn darn. Ohhh well such is life.

Post edited by: Tycos_mom, at: 2008/11/15 21:55
24. If you have decided that you are going to breed them. you should get a nest box for them when they have eggs make sure you feed them lot of soft nutritios foods like rice and bean mash cooked mashed sweet potatos egggs stuuf hat is easy for daddy bird to regurgatate and feed his wife while she is sitting on the eggs and then after the babys hatch the same foods should also be fed so they can feed their growing babes also make sure there is always cuddle bone and mineral block available for them when you make scrambled eggs grind up the shells and include the shels with the eggs they are a good sorce of calcium for them.
25. Thats great training I think all birds should fly to their owners on command. My Amazon and my Green cheeked Conure are both trained todo that. Ièm trying to get Tyco to do that now she know what I want because she watches Fergie do it all the time Tyco is still not totally ready yet Iève had he 14 months now and she has come a very long way from when I first got her but flying to me on command is not something she wants to do yet. I donèt think it will bbe long though she sees the fuss and love Fergie gets when she comes over to see me. she watches so close. Tyco and Fergie are good friends so that helps allot with Tycos training Greys seem to learn best by watching other birds. For that matter I thing all birds learn that way best. I let Gizmo watch as I pet and scritch Fergie and Raja and Ièm sure thats why Gizmo lets me scritch him and pet him. I donèt let Raja see me spend time with Gizmo at all really When I take Raja into see Gizmo Rajaès the one that gets all the attenion I put him on the boing and spin him and swing him he loves it. Ièm trying to get Gizmo to try different toys that are not attached to his cage. Iam almost tempted to take all his toys away from him and put them on the play stand so if he wants to play with them he is going to have to leave his cage to do it. I think Raja is just growing up and testing his boundrys his bluffing isnt towards me so much as it is towards my daughter she loves to play with the birds but lately Raja wont let her pick him up from inside his cage. he would never do that with me but she get intimadated easily and I think Raja sences that so he will bluff and she backs off. I try to tell her just to tell him(no) step up but if he bluff she gets nervous and doesnt want to try again so Raja gets away with it.
