  1. Greys preserve toys. Not in our house! He destroys his favorite toys as fast as he can. Toys are a really bad investment because they are demolished within minutes. Seeing the joy when that toy is being demolished-priceless!
  2. Love! these stories. Brutus loves his head and neck rubbed. His beak is special. It is the first thing he greets us with in the morning. He wants a little beak rub as soon as he sees us. Then at night, he stretches up to touch my lips with his beak while i am scratching his head. It is funny and forceful. When i bring the parrots outside he always runs over to the side of the cage for beak rubs. Even when he was a baby and I was transporting him across country in a carrier, I felt he got a great deal of comfort from beak rubs.
  3. Glad to hear all is well. So amazing that Marcus said,"What is die?" Mind-blowing really.
  4. Thanks so much for the update! i have been hoping that Missy will work out for you. i know she is not Murphy, but hopefully your relationship will develop well.
  5. You make some really good points Shanlung! Especially about the poor odds of a bird making it outside, not only crippled by clipping, but also crippled by never having flown before.
  6. Hi NatJ, I was worried too when we moved. I had no idea how resilient our birds would be. Thankfully, they all adjusted - no problem. I do have to say, however, that Brutus (our grey) did pout for a few days. By that I mean he hid in my husband's closet on top of the door for a couple of days. I guess he hoped it would all go back to the way it was. But after that he was fine. I guess all-in-all it took a couple of months before I felt he was completely comfortable and happy again. It will be fine for your bird too.
  7. Is your bird having a seizure? Is that what you mean by, "throw down?" If so, get your bird to a vet!
  8. I don't know what "unknown factories" means. Also, what does, "let him throw himself down" mean?
  9. CAG on the left is 565 gms Wow! That is one big bird!
  10. Stop what you are doing and get that baby to a vet! There IS no time to waste!
  11. I hope the mini blinds are not harmful. Thank you Greywings for pointing out that they may be! Aside from that, the visual of a bird punching holes in blinds is indeed funny! I was laughing out loud.
  12. I do believe birds are very unique individuals. All you guys talk about how wild and adventuresome your amazons are and how your greys are more sedate. My two couldn't be more different! My amazon is quiet, timid, until he gets a shower or gets on a vocalization roll. My grey is nonstop talking and getting into things. He gets bored easily and is a wild man. He streaks across our house making prehistoric noises. He loves to show off his flying and landing skills. He LOVES life! I love them both with all my heart! I feel so incredibly privileged to share my life with them. All that being said, I think it comes down to an individual bird's personality. I don't think you can categorize so quickly. If you are keen on getting a parrot, I believe you should meet lots of them. You will click with one bird more than the others and that is the bird (and breed) you should get. Good luck and keep us posted.
  13. I will work on a video one of these days. He is not quite camera ready. I am trying to teach him animal noises on command. So far he does chicken pretty well and is working on rooster and cat. He's so funny. He gets so excited. He also loves his toys. I give him corks and he is such a happy camper. Unlike a grey he doesn't get bored with the same toy which saves on toy expenditures- for sure.
  14. You are young yet. Do you have to give her up?
  15. Hi Susan we welcome you and your family of pets to the forum. Look forward to hearing all about them. Sounds like Clarisse picked you! Sweet!
  16. Congratulations Shelly! How exciting!
  17. Your situation sounds promising. Just be patient. You both have to learn each other. Be kind, gentle, and happy and he will come around. I also have a rule that my parrots do not get out of their cages by themselves. To get out they must step up (a hand or stick). They got it pretty quickly that cooperating with us is the key to freedom. Good advice Katana.
  18. Welcome to our little forum. Thanks for sharing pictures of your beautiful crew. Look forward to hearing all about them.
  19. Nancy, What a sweet story. Gave me goosebumps. So happy for you and Sophie!
  20. I agree with Nancy! I looked over a year until I found the "one." For me there is no other way to do it. I knew and he knew immediately.
  21. I am writing this to show that a little discipline is not harmful. When we moved, I vowed to keep certain areas off limits in our new house. So far it has worked. Brutus is not allowed on my desk or on the lamps next to my desk. Not to say he doesn't try, but I use a saucepan lid and chase him off. He knows the appearance of the lid and the word, "go" means he needs to move-now! I do not even have to touch him, I just flash the lid. We have reached a compromise, where he is allowed on top of the small TV on my desk, only because it is indestructible and he cannot reach anything that is destroyable. He occasionally sits on the TV (about two feet from me) at the end of the day, grinds his beak, and chills. He also is not allowed on the kitchen counters. He has a pillow on top of the refrigerator he can sit on, or he can sit on the breakfast bar, but not where I am working. I worry about heat from the stove, plus I am tired of dealing with his antics while I am concentrating on a recipe. I sound really bad-ass don't I? He is fine with our arrangement most of the time, but he still tests me from time to time which is okay. He still has managed to decorate all window and door frames with bite marks, and we have comforters covering most of our furniture, to keep it safe. I used to worry I may "damage" him with corrections, but he is a happy guy and no worse for it. I believe if you let him know he is loved and respected, he will treat you and your wishes accordingly. But, I must never waver because he will accelerate his attempts to be somewhere normally forbidden. He's not stupid. It is funny he doesn't even try to go to forbidden places when I am not home. Needless to say my computer keyboard, cell phone, and calculators are all intact, and I leave them out.
  22. All of our wooden frames around our doors and windows are full of beak marks. He loves to land on them and take a chunk out. Oh well. Also, you will never eat a meal alone if you own birds.
  23. Nancy That is terrific! You obviously didn't underestimate Sophie's intelligence. Good job! Sometimes my bird wants to play rough, but he knows now that he shouldn't bite hard. I wish my bird could sit quietly on my shoulder, but he is too hyperactive. He is constantly looking for something to do. I can pet him in my lap at night, but I can't stop petting or he will look for additional activity- usually tearing up the couch or something like that.
