  1. It's funny how fast TAGs go. We got a clutch of 4 TAGs at my work about 4 months ago and they all but one had deposits on them before they were weaned. The one had a high white cell count when we took him to the vet for a checkup and we had him in the back room away from the others on medication to clear up the infection and to make sure that was all he had.
  2. That would be a fuuny contest. I think Elmo would loose big time though. It could just be me but he is like a church mouse...then again I listen to 13 macaws, 6 greys, 2 cockatoos, and more amazons and conures than you can shake a stick at all day when I'm at work so one little grey is nothing to me. :silly: :pinch: Hey Ronda...who is Lisa? LOL...my name is Bernadette.
  3. Otto really didn't like my sister...he didn't like anyone else but it seemed he had it out for her.
  4. All the Nandays I have worked with do seem to bite more than other Conures, and I have also noticed that conures in general can become overly attached to a person and become VERY aggressive defending their "chosen one". I had a Sun that would never leave my shoulder and when he was full flight would divebomb my family and the other pets. I ended up giving him to a couple because I could not risk the health and well-being of my oldest cat any longer (19 and almost blind & deaf). If I were you I would clip her wings now...don't wait because her behavior will probabably get much worse without it done. Because of her history she very well could be a forever one person conure and seems to very much love your son. I would not push to get her to like/tolerate you because some birds just decide they don't like you and that is that...it's pretty much set in stone. Like you said, she sees you as someone trying to get between you and her "mate", and from what I have seen for myself it can get worse if you keep pushing her.
  5. I always vote on the contests. I just got a digital camera so now I am able to take more pics...I won't need to snag the one from work anymore:laugh:...so now I can get in on entering more.
  6. I wish everyone that wants to buy a bird would read that kind of thing. I read many webpages like that before I got a parrot and was ready for the noise, mess, pain, and so on. I had a girl come into my work that was maybe 17 at the oldest and she wanted a Macaw...I took one look at her and knew she shouldn't get one. She still lived at home so who knows in a year or two where she would want to live at when she moved out...apartments are no place for a macaw. She said she had been "reading" up on them but I was kind of quizing her on what she knew about macaws and she bombed big time. I started to try and get her to think of something like a cockatiel or maybe even a conure for her first bird but she was just dead set on a macaw...so I took out Stumps, a 7 month old B&G that is a real sweetheart with people that know how to control large birds but takes advantage of anyone and everyone that doesn't. She enough as soon as I passed him to her he shot right up her arm to the back of her head and started pulling her hair...hard. I got him down and told her to keep him on her hand. She then went to pet him...like a dog...and he was not happy about that and started nipping and screaming at her. I know that sounds mean to do to someone but I knew that many people selling birds don't really care who they go to and would just sell her one as long as she had the green, so I wanted to show her what she would have to put up with. I don't know if it worked, but I'm sure she will have something to think about.
  7. One of the girls I work with has a grey that just turned 2 and she only just started talking about a month or so ago. The average age to start talking is a year old but some start sooner and some start later.
  8. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!{Characters-000200D2}
  9. Like Lisa and Judy said feathers can get ruffled from time to time...Elmo always takes forever to fix a feather. It could also be a damaged feather. Tail feathers can get "kinked/broken". Normally the feather will look bent and after a few days it will break off completly at the kink. Without a pic it's hard to tell which is going on with your grey's feather.
  10. He is really trying to say "who's a good boy"...he's been going at it all evening.B)
  11. {Feel-good-0002006E} That’s hilarious! One of the girls that I work with at the pet store has a grey that asks her what she is doing every time she goes in the bathroom. She says she says back to him “I’m not telling you because you’d tell everyone!”
  12. Here is a centipeide...there are different kinds but they all look very close to this one. Here is millipede...they too can come in MANY sizes and the colors can very but they all look like they have a million legs. <br><br>Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/02/18 17:45
  13. I would wait as long as you can to let the house air out. I'm sure if the windows are being opened and I'm betting your move is still around a month away I bet it will be ok. I live in Southwest FL, and I take my grey outside every day. He never seems to be bothered by the change from indoor and outdoor temps. One thing to remember, even when your birds are in the shade they can still overheat in the afternoon. I always keep an iced drink with me outside so Elmo and take drinks as he gets hot and wants to cool down...so keep an eye on them. Also, always check your screens. Any little hole will allow sceeters in and like Muse said they carry some nasty stuff. I always pay attention to the news because there are "chicken stations" all over the county for West Nile and other illnesses and they say on the news when a chicken tests positive and what area it was in.
  14. Yeah, I already watch my mouth around him. I started watching myself as soon as I got him...and he was like, 6 weeks old. He's 10 1/2 months right now, so he's right on time for talking. He is SUCH a good bird. All day when I am gone he won't make a peep. I live with my dad and stepmom and she is always telling me how good he is because she would never guess there was a parrot in the house till I get home...and even then he never really gets loud (he can on occation though).
  15. OK, the last week Elmo has been trying to talk. He sounds more like a Cockatoo or a Macaw talking so I have not counted it yet. Well anyways, Friday night my b/f called me and Elmo was on my left shoulder and the phone was on my right ear. Right after I had said Hello and the usual whats up Elmo reached his head around and put his beak right up to the phone where you talk into and said clear as day said "Hello!" I was SHOCKED! Paul was like...what did you say...because I had already said hello...and I was all like IT WAS ELMO!!! IT WAS ELMO!!!! I can't believe that he would make sure that not only I heard it but Daddy had to hear it too. Plus, for how much he loves to talk on the phone I should have known his first word would be into the phone:laugh: . Again the next day he talked very clearly. We were watching TV and he was in his usual TV watching spot at the end of the bed. Out of no where he turned around and started looking at me. After we staired at eachother for a moment he said "Elmo" and then just turned back to watch TV. I was laughing sooo hard! One other thing that I thought was adorable is the other day I was trying to get him to say "Who's a good boy?" clearer and everytime I said "Who's a good boy" he would say "Elmo"...not a clear as I know he can be but a million points for knowing who the good boy is in the house! So far he is "almosts" saying... Hello (got it once) Elmo (got it once) What (got it once) Come here Step up, step up What cha' doing Who's a good boy
  16. Daddy longlegs are cool but I don't know what kind the white ones are. Centipeids give people nasty bites so I would imagine they could do some massive damage to your animals...but one thing, are you sure it wasn't a millipeid? Those guys are OK...they don't bite.
  17. Most stores that sell plants sell Aloes, and they are normally under $3 if they are baby plants. And one thing that is cool is when they get kinda big their roots send out baby aloe plants. I have a bagillion Aloes that all came from 3 original plants. FYI - They do great in pots too.

    Roll Call

Here! Gosh...I feel like I'm back in school. LOL!
  19. {Feel-good-0002006E} I thought you would like that Dan...I was laughing so hard when I posted it.
  20. The sound of a yawn will make them yawn. Studies done on this subjest link Empathy to why everyone yawns when one person does. Autistic children won't yawn when they see someone yawn like you and me do because autistic people normally are not capable of empathy. Parrots however are able to read facial expressions and know when we are happy, sad, mad and so on. They can also understand the tone of our voice. When I get stern with Elmo he knows I'm not happy with him and says "sorry" by putting his head down. OK, now that I have said that...having emotions that are very much like humans, when they hear a yawn or see a yawn they will do it as well. So if your grey heard you yawn then there is your answer to why he yawned.
  21. As with what everyone else has said...all the extras in it could be bad for them. I use the Juice for baths but when Elmo gets a booboo I break off a peace of Aloe from one of my plants and use the gel inside to rub on it. I tell everyone they should have one or two plants for this very reason. They are really easy to grow and if I can't kill them then no one can! When you use the plant itself you know that there is nothing in it but Aloe...just don't use anything like pesticides or fertilizer on them.
  22. It sounds like she has made that noise her contact call or thinks it's fun to do. There is really nothing you can do to make her stop...she will stop when she is good and ready...which could be never. When she makes the noise don't do anything, act like you didn't hear it. My Elmo picked up a noise that I'm not fond of and he would do it all the time, it just seemed to be his "flavor of the month". He's starting to not do it as much now and replaced it with a new noise he leaned. Basicly in a nut shell, your stuck with the noise till your grey gets bored of it. Not to sound mean but when you buy a parrot there WILL be noises your not happy about and if you can't deal with them you really should not have gotten a parrot.
  23. LOL, Jay Jay sounds like one funny grey. Most wild caught parrots never really get as hand tame as hand fed babies, but it sounds like you had a special friendship with him. Having a little bowl of food and water is always good, and that is what all the books and such say to do but I have found that adding food on the towel gets more attention from babies.
  24. Greys seem to make sure everything goes by their schedule. Thats so nice to hear that Liath is coming around.
