My Elmo is not yet sexed, but I know from his parents and one grey at my work that the physical traits are never 100%. My greys father is a small and very, very light. His mother is a huge dark, almost all black Behemoth nearly twice the fathers size. I thought at first when I saw them that it was vise-versa but then the breeder told me otherwise. There is also a grey at my work that is the typical female with a large gap in the pelvic bone, but was DNA'd male. The one lady at my work used to be a breeder and kept calling he a she, but when we showed her his paperwork from the lab she was shocked.

Yeah, be carful while playing your drinking games. LOL Elmo likes to spill all my drinks. If I have a can, cup, or bottle he is determinded to get it to hit the floor.
-
I'm sure he is fine...if he is sleeping and didn't act like it bothered him then he shouldn't be stressed. I'm sure his foot it ok too.

{Feel-good-0002006E} Is he screaming in the first pic:laugh: ? My Elmo has that look on his face when he plays with his ducky toys. BTW, I love the rack he is hanging from with the grapes.
-
Elmo does the same things, but god forbid I disturb him when he is watching HIS shows...he sits at the edge of the bed and watches Two and a half Men every night and laughs when something funny happens. But then I'm watching the Superbowl last night and do you think he would stop barking and carying on, no. To top it off he kept coming up to my face and blocking my view of the TV. He's just lucky he didn't make me miss the final plays! I still can't get over how smart they are, I knew they were but I never would have thought they had such a human personality.

Thanks everyone...the last pick is my fav too. I love my Stars and just had 3 shipping in from Cali. The one in the pic is my 3 1/2 year old male...he is such a stud. I need to get some pics of my Owl finches for everyone to see...they are my pride and joy out of my finches. Birdgranna - Gouldians are notorious bad parents and there really isn't anything you can do when they abandon the eggs/hatchlings. It seems like you are doing everything right and being in a room with other birds wouldn't necessarily spook them off the eggs unless other birds are jumping onto their cage or there is something going on next to the cage they don’t like. Be sure that they are towards the back of the room because people walking by them could spook them as well. If you really want babies you might want to get a pair of Society finches and the next time your Gouldians lay take the nest out and put it in with the Societies. From what I have hear too is if you don’t want baby Societies a same sex pair will work just as good.

He probably won't like her. The rule of thumb when it comes to getting another bird is NEVER count of the birds getting along. You will need to be ready for 2 cages, 2 stands, and even 2 different out of cage times. If you bring him to see her he will not be his usual self and may seem to like her, but as soon as you bring her home he could try to hurt her. I have a 10 month old as well and he loves to watch the finches that I have. He screams at them, watches their every move, and sometimes he jumps onto their cages to get a better look at them. All seems fine and dandy but the second one of those finches gets out he goes into Kill Mode and is completly wild. I was bitten in his finch rage once and had to towel him to remove him from the room. I tell you this as a warning because he loves the finches as long as they are in their cage, but his feelings change once they are in his space. So, once the baby is home slowly introduce them, but I don't think the visits will really do any good.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/02/04 13:55

LOL...no Italian in me ether, but I'm the bad guy in every James Bond movie!(Russian)   It sounds like you just need to keep letting Sweetheart (I bet you have second thoughts on that name after that bite) know that your the boss. From what I have read and seen for myself when they bite you need to keep at it to let them know that won't "stop you".

I got a few good shots of my Goulds, so I thought I would share! I didn't get any of one female because she is sitting on eggs right now and I don't want to scare her off them.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/02/03 06:23

He didn't want a lot of hand feeding formula?
-
I'm not sure if I'll be able to move him ether. I'm thinking I'll put him outside at first and shampoo the carpets and make sure the windows are all open. If I can smell it at all though I'll have to sweet talk my b/f or sister and get them to let me keep him over there for a few days.

Ok, so I live with my dad and he has decided to remodel the house a little bit. He's putting in new kitchen applinaces and countertops and now has decided to put in new flooring. Most of the house is going to get fake hardwood but not too far from my room he is going to put down new carpet. I'm going to be moving out and getting a place with my long time b/f but we have to wait till his lease is up in July, but I don't think my dad will wait till then. I don't know if the carpet he is getting has any toxic coating on it or not but I don't want to risk it, so what should I do to keep Elmo safe? Will being in another room with windows open be enough or will I need to get him out of the house?

I have a grand piano in the living room and when I sit and play Elmo likes to join in too. I think the loud noises from the piano is like an invite for them to make a lot of noise with us.

I would stick to the african parrots, the are much quieter than the south american and Ausi breeds. Have you thought of a senegal?

Marlene and Coachdes- You could go in 2 directions. My Elmo wanted NOTHING to do with food when he was around 9-10 weeks. What I did was I would pick him up and have him on my desk (he came to work with me) and I found that he loved cinnimon apple sause with blueberries, cherries (pitted), and grapes mixed in. He would eat himself stuffed when I would offer these items to him. He didn't really begin to eat pellots, seeds, and nuts till he was on one feeding a day. Try this and see if it helps for them to be with you. The other thing you can do is basicly leave the room. There are a few birds at my work that won't eat on their own when there are people around...esp. the hand feeders. These birds are also the birds that wean older than others. One thing to keep in mind. There are a few different health issues that will keep a baby bird from eating on it's own and weaning. If the tricks I posted don't seem to make a big turn around in your babies I would take them to an avain vet and get a crop culture and blood work for cell counts. There are two baby birds that I have seen at my work that had crop infections and would not eat on their own till it was cleared up. P.S. - Not trying to scare anyone with the infection thing, but I wanted both of you to know about that possibility. Marlene, you should have the fastest trun around because of the age. Coachdes, give him a little while because you could have a normal late bloomer baby.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/02/01 17:15

Yeas, as long as it is powder coated.

http://stores.ebay.com/Demsond-Pet-Depot They have a great 36wide cage that I got for my grey...GREAT price too. Yuo want to look for Stainless Steel or powder coated cages. Paint won't hold up.

As soon you can. I would say if it has all/most of it's feathers you should start.

MazyAK wrote: This is a sore subject for me because like I have said before I work at a pet store. If the store looks bad then yes, I would "boycott" buying anything from them, animal or supply, but the birds at my store are well cared for and are all from local breeders so there is no support of "bird mills". Also, I care about where the birds go and have refused sales and so have the other girls there and we have the owners backing. It's too bad that there are stores that don't care for their animals the way that mine does, but that does not mean every store should be looked down on.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/02/01 03:53

What do you use to clean your greys cage?
BMustee replied to vaya_the_elf's topic in The GREY Lounge
Poop-off it a great product. It cleans by using enzimes...not chemicals. It's also safe to use with the bird still in the cage which is really nice when I'm cleaning the finch cage. I'd be careful with the windex Woody6, the ammonia in it can be harmful...when I need to use it on the windows I take the birds out of the room till the smell is gone. -
Info on Missouri's bill they are trying to pass
BMustee replied to Makena's topic in Off-Topic Discussions
That is absolute BULL S***!!! At the bottom it says that if you have a "wild animal" and you don't have the permit then they can come in, take it, and ether give it to a Sanctuary or have it euthanized. -
I got the first DVD, and I really liked it. I was able to trick train my Sun conure Otto and my CAG Elmo all the tricks with it. I'm going to buy the rest of the DVD's one of these days. It came with a subscription for this Organic pellot food that was REALLY expensive...like $30.00 per bag...but I e-mailed them and cancelled it before I was shipped the second bag (first bag free). I think that some stuff was worked on before (they say te birds are not trained to do the tricks before hand) but it's still great for learning the "how tos".

I need to quit...but I love it! I would like to quit soon because I see what it does to you when you get older (my step-mom got COPD at like, 45) and I really don't want to look like a catchers mit ether. I keep telling myself "it's not a good time now, maybe next month". Geesh...what the mind will tell you when it's hooked on something.

LOL...I have noticed that some birds do like the roto a lot more than the nail clippers. What I like to do with birds that have long nails is clip as much as I can without cutting the quick (cutting an 8th, and then shaving little by little after that) and then go back over them with the roto. Sometimes the nails can feel just as bad after a trim as they did before if you don't file them. Another thing that I have noticed is a lot of birds are calmer if you let them "hold" your hand. When I'm the one holding the bird I will give the bird my thumb to hold and they don't seem to struggle as much...works almost every time with the greys and Amazons.

What kind of paint is "pet safe"? I never heard of that before.
