1. Yeah, sounds like a night fright...you mights want to try putting a night light buy his cage.
2. I second Dave's advise.
3. It helped me sleep a little...I was still really worried. When I woke up and remembered what had happened the night before I shot up and looked in the cage. I don't think I have ever been happier to see an egg at the bottom of the cage before in my life.
4. That looks fine, I get mine at Walmart for like, $7 a gallon. Don't mix it with water, it's not as good diluted. You never want to spray it right in the face, but I have been using the stuff for a while now and Elmo never seems to act like it's bothering his eyes at all.
5. "Winning the Birds with Toys Contest...like stealing a binki form a baby!"
6. LOL...no, not an excuse!  I'm going to have babies to the ceiling! At least my manager knows that I have healthy babies and always buys them for the store.
7. I was Freaking out when I saw what was going on. After I had gotten her set up I called up a friend of mine that used to breed parrots (she had over 300 birds at one time) and told her what all I did and what else I could do. She said I had it all right and all I could really do was hope for the best till morning. It was pretty funny, she was like, "You know what you are doing, why did you need to call me?" I think I just needed to hear I did all I could.
8. As you all may know I breed Exotic Finches and have been doing it for about 4 years now. Well, I got a few new Star Finches a few months back after my female (buddha) died; I figure I might as well have two genetically unrelated pairs sense I'm one of the only people that breeds them in the area. So last night I got home from work around 9 o'clock and I saw that Ghandi's new female was sticking her tail strait into the air and pushing. All the while Ghandi was trying to help her get the egg out. I got her out of the flight and into the hospital cage under a heat light. She wasn't acting sick other than the pushing so I kept an eye on her for a little while. I noticed she hadn't pooped yet so I pulled her out and rubbed a little olive oil on her vent. Not too long later she had "gone" quite a few time and was still acting perky. So, at 1 am I figured she wasn't going to sleep with the heat light on her and Ghandi was still up calling for her so I went ahead and put her back into the flight. This morning when I got up sure enough there was a little egg as the bottom of the cage. I'm so relieved she pasted the egg without further intervention.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/04/06 05:19
9. Geez...Well, the two I got the other day ended up being two females (no way to visually sex) and I didn't have the heart to take one back to swap out with a male. You should have seen how these finches were acting when I placed them in the large flight cage with the plants and astro-turf bottom. Both of them wouldn't fly around, but stayed on the sides, it's like they have been in tiny little cages their whole lives. Well, long story short I spent all day sexing the birds at the store and brought home two males so now I have two sets of Society finches.
10. Alex died from arterosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). All of his tests, including his cholesterol level and asper levels, came back normal earlier that week. His death could not be connected to his current diet or his age; the veterinarian said that she has seen similar events in young (<10 year old) birds on healthy diets. Most likely, genetics or the same kind of low-level (impossible to detect in birds as yet) inflammatory disease that is related to heart disease in humans was responsible
11. I'm not saying there needs to be a cure...the telethon would just raise funds to get more birds! LOL!!!
12. When is there going to be a telethon to bring awareness to this debilitating condition?
13. I hear they are just about as bad as Zebras but at least with them I can sneek in other finch eggs in with them. Maybe I will actually have some Owl babies.
14. Well, my MBS flaired up again and I got another set of finches. Yesterday I picked up a pair of Society Finches. One is a Chocolate Self Pied, and the other is the same but he's got the hairdo like the Gloster Canaries have. I'll post pics as soon as they have settled in.
15. Here is Elmo with his red bear. The breeder gave him that toy when I took him home and he still has it to this day...he's a year old now. If I can find the cord for my camera before the voting starts I will switch my pic with on of him opening his birthday presents!
16. Yes, a little more info would help a lot. If the wings are cliped too short it will cause a crash landing. Who does the clipping? How many are clipped and how close to the covert feathers are the flights clipped?
17. Yes, keep the feedings till around 10 weeks, babies will normally let you know because they just aren't that into the feeding. The afternoon should be dropped first, then the morning. The night feeding is like a security blanket for them, so don't rush dropping that one.
18. Elmo's beak just the entire bottom half shed off a few weeks ago...it's just growing is all. B)
19. Don't worry too much about the feathers coming out. Elmo lost a tail feather last week and he lost a flight feather last night. A lot of birds at the pet store are starting to molt now too...I think it's just one of those times of year. It can take a little while for you to see the new feathers coming in, so don't be worried if you don't see anything yet.
20. They look like the ends of a shoelace.
21. ohhhh, I just took pics of Elmo opening his gifts on his birthday and I got him a new "triple threat ducky" toy...I'll enter it later today (hope I can find the cable for my camera)
22. That is such good news. I love hearig about a rescue coming around and becoming a well-rounded bird. Keep up the good work with her! {Feel-good-000200BB}
23. I could have too but this is a family forum! :woohoo:
24. The beak is like a human finger nail, they are made of kerotin and are always growing. It's normal for them to "shed" the outer layer. The beak grinding is her keeping her beak in tip-top shape...I would be worried if she didn't do it.
