1. Hahaha, I wanted to name Elmo Stalin originally because of his "evil" humor but my b/f was like "you might as well name him Hitler!!! That name is blackballed" I say let your grey name himself. I figure it might have taken me longer than the industrial revolution to name Elmo, but at least the name fits! Don't presure yourself...the perfect name will come to you...eventually! hahaha
2. hahaha!!! It's not as bad as one of the other members. Their grey did the truck-in-reverse "BEEP BEEP BEEP" when she bent over in front of it!
3. I like Rowan, Rigby and Greeley. Don't feel bad. I got Elmo in May of 07 and didn't name him until December!!!
4. Pchela wrote: Ohhh, if noname is anything like Elmo prepare yourself. Elmo has busted out laughing while he watches me in the shower. I tell myself he thinks the soap is funny but I know what he's thinking. He'll do the wolf whistle after laughing and I tell him the peanut gallery can go back to the cage if it doesn't stop with the mockery.
5. I second what Dave has said. Seeing as though no one is missing toes and there has been no big fight it's worth a shot at seeing if they get along. Dave - I love the picture. The red lored is one of my favs of the Amazons.
6. You just described to a T how Elmo plays with me. He play bites and acts like he is attacking me and then start to gurg. Elmo has learned how hard he is allowed to play bite by me taking my hand away from him if he got a little to hard. It's his fav way to play with me and I love it too.
7. {Feel-good-0002006E} I'll have to put them on tonight and see if he attacks again and get a picture! Yeah, Tracy...thats exactly how I look in them!!!
8. {Feel-good-0002006E} Good one Penny. I would have tried to teach the bird to say something along with "Gary" like "Gary, the rat bastard."
9. Ohhhh, that is sad. I hope Tui shows up!
10. As many of you know, Elmo has a dark sense of humor. Well, now he is talking and letting his feeling be known. I have a laptop computer and when I'm on it I lay on my belly on the bed and have it in front of me. Elmo normally is running around on the bed and jumping to and from the tree stand. Well, last week I was laying down posting here on the forum and Elmo was running up and down my back. I was wearing a pair of spandex capri pants (my workout/housework cloths) and all of a sudden he started attacking my butt!!! After he did the Grey attack scream he yelled out "Ehhhh!!! STOP IT!!! Don't you do it!!" and started attacking again! :woohoo: Then yesterday I was wearing the same capri pants and he did it AGAIN!!! I think Elmo is trying to tell me my butt doesn't look very good in them...but I disagree!  That bird just don't know a nice derrière when he sees one!
11. Who is missing? Whats the story on this?
12. ""Yes, I am aware of the bird flu. I Even know where they come from. DO YOU??? For you information there are few places that are as disease free as a sailboat at sea, or even anchor."" Don't try to make other people look dumb...pretty much everyone that watches the news and reads a paper know what the H5N1 virus is and where it has been found. As for it being a "they"...it's not a group of people...it's a mutated virus. Your boat may not be harboring any disease but the water fowl in the forign countries you may want to dock at can and do carry local viruses and disease that may not cause great harm to the local avian population but could be deadly to a new bird...then carried back to it's home dock where it can spread it to all the birds in that location. """Yes, I was personal attacked. Someone called me "retarded" and other choice words. That is a personal attack, and has no place in civilized discussions""" You were not called retarded...if I was going to call you a retard I would have said "SFsailor, your a retard." I was refering to your idea of boat safty as retarded. Like I have said before, harnesses where created for a reason...use one. If a bird is in a harness there is no way it's getting away from you or drowning. """I am really dissapointed in all the close minded diatribe that has been shot at me.""" Well, look who is calling the Kettle black. You shot down everything that has been said here and think that everyone should agree with your Pirates of the Caribbean lifestyle. If you really wanted to learn from other peoples knowledge you would not be so combative with everyone that disagrees with you.
13. Elmo sits on the shower curtain when I take a shower and the steam is not enough. The amount of dust on their feathers keep any moisture off their feathers. All parrots need a good soaking bath...down to the skin. Elmo HATES spray baths and it takes a long time to get through the dust. Nevjoe posted how he gave his birds their baths and it works GREAT for me as well. Fill the bathtube enought to come up to your birds chest and plop them in. Elmo never seemed to get as wet as I would like till I started doing this. He had two new tail feathers coming in that were curved and the barbs were not tight. After his bath they are the picture of perfection. Baby birds do tend to have frayed and broken feathers because of inexperiance, but that is one more reason a good bath is so important.
14. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Because I live in Florida being prepared for a storm is always on TV, but we all need to be ready no matter where you live. The house next door to you could go up in flames and you may only have a second to get out. Without a plan already in place it would be very difficult to get everything you need.
15. It’s that time of year again…hurricane season. Living on the Gulf Coast every year we need to be prepared for the worst, and it’s something even people not in the hurricane zone should do. With all the flooding, fires, and tornados across the country everyone with pets needs to have a plan. Always know where your pets carrier is and have it ready. I keep Elmo’s carrier by the cage. Don’t forget about your small birds ether. I keep my finches in a very large flight that won’t fit in the car. I keep two small cages that I can move them into for evacuation. Be sure to have carriers for all your pets. I have 2 cats, 14 finches, and my Congo African Grey; all of them have a designated carrier. If you have dogs and cats be sure to have their tags (if they don’t already wear them) and vaccination paperwork in your evacuation kit. Not all shelters except animals and many of the shelters that do require you to register before evacuations. Call your local Emergency Management Division to find out where the designated animal friendly shelter is located and register if needed. If you live in one of the many counties that do not have animal friendly shelters you should find out what veterinarian offices are approved for boarding animals during a storm or after another catastrophic disaster. I know I could not bare to leave my animals anywhere during such a stressful time and if you are like me you should keep the numbers to multiple hotels that except pets. They fill up fast so be sure to call early, not the day before the storm hits. If you have family or friends that are inland or in an area out of harms way call them ahead of time and see if you could evacuate to their home with your pets. I know many of us are guilty of letting our parrots food get down to a day or twos worth before we head to the store, but in this season you need to keep at least a weeks worth at all times. I keep my birds food in plastic locking containers and if need be can be packed into a tote bag quickly and easily, which is also kept by the cage. Be sure to have three days worth of water for each bird as well. Health emergencies can happen any time and you don’t want to be caught without your first aid kit. My first aid supplies are all in a small toolbox. Nail clippers, needle nose pliers, flour/cornstarch, antibiotic ointment, and the rest of the necessities should always be together and ready to go. Be sure the number to your avian vet is in your kit and if your bird has a leg band the ID# should be written down as well. I’m sure we all remember the horrific images on TV and in the papers of animals left behind to weather the storm and we don’t want that for our pets. Following this basic disaster plan will make it so much easier to get everyone to safety.

Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2008/06/11 19:46
16. If you have seen him eating earlier in the day another thing you can do is just stay out of the room for a few days around feeding time. It seems a bit harsh, I know, but if he only wans food from you then if he doesn't see you then he will just feed himself. You'll still give him the morning and night feeding so your not going to scar him. Before you do that you could also cut down on how much you give him. Just give him a taste and but him back down in front of his big bird food.
17. Hahaha, yes they were kept in captivity and used as "ambassador" animals. The male had cataracts starting and really didn't mind people working in his aviary near him...the female however hated people and would use the one huge wing to it's full advantage. She must have known she could at least get up to eye level to have that kind of attitude.
18. Like everyone else I hope it was not the begining of feather destruction again. Be sure to not let her see you get worked up over it.
19. """As for the foriegn country thing. It is a necessacity.""" No, entering a foriegn country is NOT a necessacity. Not only are you breaking laws but you would be putting your bird and other peoples bird in danger. I'm sure you have heard of the H5N1 virus, as well as other avian viruses. Reducing the risk of pandemics is the major reason of these laws. Also, if you are found with your grey she could very well be taken away from you and destroyed. All I know is I fully agree with these laws and if I ever NEED to go into a foriegn country I will leave my CAG at home. In my job I talk to so many parrot owners it's not even funny and I can not even begin to tell you how many sad stories I have heard about a beloved pet that flew away never to be seen again. Greys, Macaws, Conures, you name the bird and it has flown away. All birds are capable of returning home, but like you said, greys get spooked and don't pay attention where they are going. Harnesses are made for a reason and if you really wanted to keep your grey safe you would use one while outdoors. Maybe your blindness to safety is because you think your bird is perfectly trained and will always do exactly what you want her to do, but parrots are too smart for that and have a mind of their own...a wild mind based on instinct. You want to let your grey fly free, thats your problem, but I know I am not alone on this and many others probably feel the same way as I and don't want to hear some sob story about your grey flying away in a month or so when you have brought in on yourself.
20. He could be picking out the red ones. From the pick it doesn't look like blood and the urinates looks ok.
21. Thats not really a clear pic and it looks like it is dry too. Has you grey been eating a lot of red foods?
22. I'm with you guys...poachers are the worlds biggest douchebags! I got to work with a couple Bald Eagles before. They were both hit by cars and had to have wings amputated. They are such stunning creatures.
23. {Feel-good-0002006E} Ok, first thing, Greys are not part Homing Pigeon. Just from what you wrote it sounds like every time your grey flys off you have to go looking for it...it's not like it comes back landing on your shoulder. A flighted bird with no cage is NOT boat safty...in fact, that is Absolutely retarded. A bird on a boat needs to be in a cage if there is open access to the outside and on a harness when it is out. Greys are not long distance flyers and it cold very well become exhausted and too far away from land or the boat and end up drowning. As for "releasing" her to enter a foriegn country, it's such a ridiculous idea I'm speechless!!!
24. I would do what everyone else has said. Get the word out about how horrible this breeder is. Crop burning is one of the worst injuries a baby bird can face, yet is the easiest to avoid. Just to let you know, never feed formula over 110 degrees F, I alway feed at 105-106 to be sure it's not going to burn. ALWAYS use a thermometer...I prefer digital...and never trust a wrist test for temp. I'm sure your vet explained this to you. At my store we have black listed a number of local breeders that we will never buy from again because of health issues with their babies. Right now we have a U2 that has been fighting a deep infection. The vet and us will think it's cleared up but then it comes right back. We are now starting a massive antibiotic by injections, and have to watch her to be sure her kidneys don't shut down. We will tell people who these breeders are and have told the Avain Vet we take our birds too so he knows what baby birds to watch and do extra careful exams on.

Question

At 8 months your grey probably has not hit his first molt...that takes place at a year old. My CAG started hers at 13 months old.
