Oh kitt what a lovely love story there, please dont overload yourself with guilt as it wont change anything & as hard as it seems right now these things do unfortunately happen.please stay positive for milly's sake

Siobhan i was going to suggest keeping Liath in her cage but i really dont think that's the way to go. On watching the video again i think the way you are asking Liath to step up could be polished up a little You are offering your hand at times in the wrong position & asking " Do you want to step up " Hold your finger or wrist in front of the bird, level with the bird’s abdomen directly above the feet. Make sure you are close enough that it will be an easy step for your bird. Apply gentle pressure to the abdomen & at the same time just a short verbal command " Liath step up " once she has stepped up with your thumb apply gentle pressure over her toes to stop her escaping,if need be you can cup her wings with your other hand.

Great advice Berna Fingers crossed for little milly.

We are ROOKIES, just got a Blue Ring Neck..HELP
lovemyGreys replied to BlueLover2008's topic in The GREY Lounge
It may be wrong spookyhurst but i do agree a forum specifically for ringnecks would be the ideal place for immediate answers, sometimes due to time differences etc.. it may be a while before a post gets a response Bluelover please stick around & share your ringneck with us, although many of us are grey owners, many members do have other breeds of birds too -
sorry to hear that Berna, this is the saddest & hardest part of owning any pet when we have to say goodbye. My thought's are with you x

So are we to share some " kodak moments soon then " ??

OK as much as i want to I'm not going to laugh :pinch: I can see from the video just what a problem you are having with Liath.Im racking my brains for a solution but i really dont know the answer Siobhan, i can only suggest a few ideas Can the gym top be removed from the top of the cage ? Do you have a playstand that you could use instead for a few days ? The main problem here apart from the obvious stepping up, is the height issue,Liath has the upper hand over you & is using it to her full advantage. She needs to be brought down to your level while she is refusing to step up in the mornings, otherwise you are going to have this constant battle everyday.I will see if i can come up with anything else for you

OK Penny, Are you shouting at us ? :pinch:  But yes we do all need a gentle reminder to leave some comments

The male seems to be the most active of the two sexes in vocalizations. Female doves often do make a "coo" sound, it is not as elaborate as the male, but it could be described as a "coo" sound.

Caroline i know it is a shock to you,but knowing you as i do,i do know you will love your new baby no less regardless of sex Keeko to me is neither male or female, but if you feel the need to chance it, do it now while your little boy is a baby
-
 sorry for laughing Siobhan, it was the picture of Liath spinning upside down ! If it is only happening when she has been out for short while it may be her way of protesting that she is not ready to go back in , I'm not sure what to suggest but you know she mustn't have the upper hand

The larger one chewed on me much harder then the smaller one. Could this be a sign of a biter? No not at all, all babies test things out with their beaks & the majority of greys at some point in their life will go through a biting phase. I have read that males tend to be more open to new things and people. I have also heard that there is really no difference in personality of the two. There really is no difference between owning a male or female, as for males excepting new things more readily i would disagree, i have 2 males & 2 females neither sex shows any signs more than the other in excepting new situations or people, this would depend on the birds individual personality more than the sex. If you take a visit to the nursery room you will see various threads on socializing your new baby etc...

Hi Kushaka & welcome to the forum
-
Well there is pro's & con's for both, whatever your decsion you will need, time & commitment to either a baby or an older grey. An adult parrot in a new home can become very bonded to its new family. On the other hand, an adult bird with social problems may never become affectionate and may never even like its new guardians, but that has less to do with age than it does with how the parrot was raised and treated by its previous humans. There's no reason why you shouldn't welcome an older bird into your home. Yes, its personality is pretty much formed by the time the bird is well into its adulthood, but if you can accept the bird for who it is as an individual, then you may find a good friend, even if you had nothing to do with its upbringing. Baby parrots are sweet and practically beg you to take them home. You can share the journey of your baby growing up, you can train your baby etc..you can socialize it with all family members,it really is up to you & what your expectations of either a baby or an older bird are.If it boils down to a bonding issue for you then a baby may well be the way to go but even then at some point in it's life a grey may pick a family member to bond with & there is nothing you can do about it.
-
I have both boys & girls Di, i do think all this bonding with the opposite sex is very much a myth Getting your baby from an early age will of course help strengthen your bond , but be aware also that at any given point in it's life any grey may pick one family member who they see as their mate & there is really nothing you can do about that. There is a good topic in he nursery room about socializing your baby grey
