  1. Well she was positive for gram negative bacteria in her stool. But her white blood cell count was up so high, and the doc thinks its cause she has had this for so long! Ya know what I will show you the pics, I'll start a new thread for how filthy the condition of the cage she was in. Basically how she got that sick was because she somehow was ingesting her own poop. Whether it be cause she was walking around on perches that had at least a half inch of crap on them, or cause when I saw her, her water smelled foul and had poop floating in the bottom!!! I'm sure she will be fine, the vet said I caught her in time. I just have to hope and pray that she didn't have this for so long that it damaged her organs!

    Ditto what dblhelix said!
  3. Talon, dont' get me wrong I'm not advising him NOT to get it, I want that poor baby to go to a good home! I just feel that he needs to get it to a vet ASAP. Mind you both my Greys were very sick when I got both of them. Red had an awful yeast infection, that I'm STILL trying to get rid of, not nearly as bad, just a little on the high range of normal and the vet wants it a bit lower. Zsa, my recent rescue has a bacterial so bad the vet gave her about another 3-5 years of life, and she is only 3 years old! She is still currently on meds, and her follow up appointment is in 10 days so I'm really hoping that she has taken a turn for the better! Either way I hope boswell can get this baby into a much better place than it is now!! Kudos!
  4. Red's main staple is pellets. She was raised solely on sunflower seeds the first 12 years of her life until she came to live with me. so getting her transitioned into eating pellets was a big enough chore. She will try oatmeal and will eat carrots and most nuts so I pretty much feed her what she will eat. The rest of my flock gets pellets, nuts, and fresh stuff grapes, raspberries, melon, apples, pears, mine go BONKERS for pears, and any other in season fruit. As far as veggies its mostly peas, carrots potatoes and corn. They will occasionally eat tomatoes, jalepenos, and bell peppers I give them!
  5. I got this info off my forum that I moderate for, figured ya'll might like this. It's numbers for different brands of pellets and they will send you free samples! I've gotten a couple and they were good sized! Hagen (Tropican pellets and Gourmet mix) -- 1-800-225-2700 Harrisons (pellets) -- 1-800-346-0269 Lafeber (Nutriberries and AviCakes) -- 1-800-842-6445 Pretty Bird International Inc. (pellets) -- 1-800-356-5020 Roudybush Feed (pellets) -- 1-800-326-1726 Ziegler Brothers Inc. (pellets) -- 1-800-841-6800
  6. well the beak appetite they have a nuts for alfredo one that my birds like, and a carribbean one thats good too. I would have to recommend though, they have like this beak appetite "sampler" thing that I've only seen it at theperchstore.net, if I found it somewhere else I would just get it where its cheaper but they have like 6 of the flavors, and instead of buying the huge packs you can figure out which ones that your bird(s) like! They have tons of flavors. None of mine seem to "prefer" one over the other. The one you mentioned by Kaytee doesn't sound too bad, more or less the same as the beak appetite! I'm going to post a new thread that has the numbers for free pellet samples, so go look for it! This way you can try different ones with your Grey or other birds for that matter and see what they like!
  7. How did I miss this post? Here are all of my tats, I'm quite colorful to say the least LOL Left shoulder Right shoulder Nape of my neck Whole view of shoulders Left foot, still in proces of becoming and entire sleeve Right foot, will be getting this covered soon Henna colored Dragonflies behind each ear I'm a little crazy I know..I will have at least 4 more tats before I'm done!
  8. Yeah, I don't think clipping is so bad, better be safe than sorry!
  9. All of my birds have been rehomed/rescues, so I don't actually know if they have all been vaccinated prior to coming to live with me or not. If you plan on taking your birds out in public alot, or you're a breeder, or visit a friend that breeds or has a lot of birds, its a good idea. I don't have any friends with birds around here, and I go to meetings once a month. Typically polyoma is common in dirty environments, and particularly common for breeders. For some reason it is more often seen in lovebirds, budgies, and some of the smaller breeds. None of mine are vaccinated, but if I were going to get any vaccinations, that would be the one I would get! Personally if I were buying a bird from a breeder I would get the Polyoma vaccine, only cause the virus can withstand many household disinfectants, but not bleach. Although a breeder could have a sparkling aviary, doesn't mean it couldn't be crawling with stuff. And to answer your question, polyoma is a yearly vaccine. My vet doesn't really recommend it for larger birds if not taken out in public often and exposed on a daily basis.
  10. My friend who lives in Missouri, her CAG talks with an accent its very cute! I also have a good friend in Sweden who has an Amazon that only speaks Swedish, now that is a TRIP to hear!
  11. If you can convince them to let you take it to the vet, or even they can go with you do it. You will regret getting a bird that is deathly sick, and contaminating the rest of the flock if something is wrong! and I would pay $400, I feel that fair IF and only IF that fee includes a vet visit!!
  12. I personally won't paint my nails with any of the birds up. They all go in their rooms for the night and I open up all the windows before I do so, as honestly the fumes gag me, so they can't be terribly good for the bird! I'm not a fan of harness if your bird is clipped. Granted I know my Sun can still get a good amount of distance without wings, but she can't glide. I think once your bird is trained and comfortable around you, her randomly flying off sholdn't be as big of an issue, unless of course she got spooked or something. Heck just a couple weeks ago I took my birds to one of our outdoor bird club meetings. My Senegal and my Sun Conure were both very well behaved, neither tried to fly off or anything like that, and close to a dozen people held them! I think once you get to know your bird thats where the learning begins, every situation will be different!
  13. Red's new one lately has been SHUT THE DOOR!!! I live alone, so have no idea where the heck she got it LOL
  14. I dunno, I've had birds die on me, nd to be honest I'd rather be safe than sorry!
  15. IF its made for parrots, it should be fine...like I said I prefer leaving dry foods over wet foods in the morning as I don't want it sitting, just throw a muffin in one bowl and pellets in the other, of your could mix them up so he/she has to forage, thats also really good for them to get that foraging behavior incorporated into their habits!
  16. Whole grain bread should be fine. I won't feed my birds butter as its just too fattening for them. Now bread with a bit of peanut butter is ok, BUT only as a treat once in a while. Usually I say if its bad for me it might be bad for the birds. They key is try to stay as natural as possible. If it is made with a machine or is too "man made" like butter, I won't feed it. Contrary though pellets are an made, but specifically for birds, not for humans. Fried foods are NO NO. Now I will give my birds a french fry IF I have baked it, but even then we're talking maybe 2-3 fries a year. And here's some food for thought. If I don't know exactly what I'm eating in fish sticks or chicken nuggets I won't give it to my birds. There are so many fillers(as we've all learned from the recent articles in the paper involving the chinese etc) For instance, I just went and grabbed a bag of frozen chicken strips in my fridge. Here's the ingredients that I do know: Boneless chicken breast, chicken broth. Heres the ingredients I don't know: Sodium phosphates(actually I know what these are from all my chem classes) salt and "natural flavor", dextrose(a sugar) oleoresin paprika and annatto, xanthum gum. Then it says they are set in oil. I'm sorry but I probly shouldn't be eating let alone my Grey. My rule of thumb is if I don't know what EVERY ingredient is, I won't feed it. You could try smoothies....I haven't noticed much success with really watery things. I noticed though that if its the consistency of oatmeal let's say or thicker that they're more prone to eat it! You'd be better off getting a cheap food processor and just getting everything finely chopped so that it still has a really good texture, but also it gets the pieces small enough to where they can't really pick them out, and in order to eat that chunk of strawberry, they're gonna have to eat that piece of carrot too! B)
  17. something just looks wrong with that eye in both of the pictures that you have shown me, if it were me, I would find out when the last vet visit was for this bird. I would also use this in negotiation especially if its been over a year. What I mean by a hybrid is half TAG half CAG. I have met one, that looked just like that bird had the maroon tail, horn colored beak, but was light grey. The pics do look pretty rough, but I would ask if you could take it to the vet first before you buy it. You don't want to buy a bird that is terribly sick to the point of dying, when you could get it for much less and be able to put that money towards getting her medicated, rather than paying a ransom.
  18. When they take the blood sample, they can jsut smear some of the blood on a piece of paper that is sent off in the mail, when they take it for a full blood panel, which you want done at the vet! I would also recommend an organ function test and a poop gram stain. As far as vaccinations, polyoma is one I recommend, and your vet can inform you of what to get, thats the best way to go!
  19. Oh and as far as a contract, dangit I will have to look and see if I have my old one...Here it is this is a basic graft of what I made up: Adoption Contract for General, African Grey Parrot I _______________________________ agree to adopt this African Grey Parrot from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for the sum of $600. Included in this fee is the Parrot, its cage and toys. Chelsea will pay an up front deposit of $50, along with making payments of at least $50 on or by the 10th, and the 25th of every month until the $600 is paid in full. I ______________________________ am surrendering ownership of this African Grey Parrot to Chelsea XXXXXXXX. Although visually healthy, I do not guarantee the health of this bird, and am selling General “as is”. Any fees incurred involving Veterinary care, are solely up to Chelsea XXXXXXXXXX to be responsible for. In signing this contract I give Chelsea permission to take General home, with a deposit, on the condition that she abides by this contract. Of course you can always adjust it for your situation, but that kinda gives you an idea of how to go about it!
  20. Yay I love Karma!!!! And I love answering questions and helping people out, I know that I've had to ask many questions myself, so I'm just returning the favor is all! Wow, well Bos, I wouldn't accept the cage either due to the rust spots on it!!! It looks like it is in horrific condition, and the Grey doesn't look that much better, could be the picture though. If you can get the bird to a vet sooner I would do so. I know first hand how they can look remotely healthy and have an awful bacterial infection! It also looks really light for a TAG. It's got the horn colored beak, but looks like, could it possibly be a hybrid?? Anyhow if you can negotiate the price down even by $50, thats $50 you can put towards toys etc. That poor thing looks like it needs some differnt perches that aren't so straight, like manzanita and such! Either way good luck and congrats!
