Good point and well taken. For someone not very experienced pulling a blood feather, the best thing to do is get their bird to an avian vet asap!
-
This is interesting. I just read the information as did Birdhouse and it does look promising. In regards using on a blood feather that has broken,I would recommend pulling it immediately to stop the bleeding. However, for those that may be overwhelmed with a 911 situation such as this with a bird that will be fairly upset with being toweled, biting etc. The new Vitegel might be a life saver if applied quickly. The problem will still be holding the bird to apply it. My thoughts are I would just pull the feather if I had the bird toweled for expediency. Vitegel may well be a good product where there is an open wound on their body you can easily get to with less fuss than a blood feather. Styptic Powder works well too and all bird owners should have some on hand at all times. Thanks for sharing this.

Congrats! Babies are sweet. However I would not want to live the first 2 years of Dayo again! I have several battle scars.

Happy B-Day Corky. Is Dad getting you a car now?

Good decision Neoow! Many owners feel safe when they have clipped their parrots wings. However when a fright happens a clipped bird with all the Adrenalin pumping can fly believe it or not. To stop that you would need to clip them very short which could result in a very bad fall and split their beast depending on what surface they land on.

LOL Stephen! Dayo does that to Kim on her blanket and when he gets real desperate he will try to balance on he Bong and mate.

It is a great loss. Dave was instrumental in assisting many grey owners in caring for their greys properly. He has contributed many articles to this site. Thanks for posting this Judy. I had just logged in to do the same. - Dan

I hope this works out the way you hope it does.

Word of advice, most Vet's for years have told everyone to clip their birds wings. I must say though not all. It is because they are fearful the Bird owner will not be responsible enough and let the bird fly out the door. Your Grey at 12 weeks old is just getting started in learning flight control. You'll be amazed what what they can do once accomplished. Birds are made to fly. A large portion of their Brain is devoted to it. Your Grey will be happier and so will you with them if they are flighted. They can also fly and get out of danger if need be from a dog, cat or even young child that could harm them. They can be hurt very easily by any of these. They only weigh around a pound and their bones are hollow. I also need to add, when your bird is fledging make certain you have mirrors covered and windows curtains closed. You can introduce her to windows while carry around on your hand or arm and letting her beak them to see they are solid. It will take her a while to figure out you cannot fly through them.

Dayo getting some love from his Mommy last night
danmcq replied to danmcq's topic in The GREY Lounge
I know right? Mommy can do that, Daddy will get a finger ripped off. He does love to get scratches from me though, which I enjoy doing. -
LOL, Gracie's a hoot! Thanks for sharing this.

He is so loving sometimes.... When he's not being a tyrant!

Congrats and she is beautiful. Please don't clip, let her be all the bird she was born to be. We all are always aware of where our birds are and make certain there are no flights out an open door. It is easy to remember and also advise guests if the birds are out.

I got the same error as Dave when I logged on the site today and half the folders were missing as well. After refreshing the screen a few times the entire forums folders appeared finally. Very odd behavior.

Was the breeder using a syringe or a spoon? Perhaps your new grey is expecting a spoon? It certainly needs food as you know especially at such a young age to complete proper development. When Daveoo7 chimes in I am positive he will have a lot to say.

Thinking About Larger Cage For Isaac - Questions
danmcq replied to Elvenking's topic in The GREY Lounge
Nice Cage and good to see him in it.! -
It's "Ok" but some of them do not match Dayo's look/body language at all. Each Grey's personality comes out in various ways. The biggest one it's missing is the "Poker Face"... You have no clue of what may happen

LOL at technology... Dayo is so fast with a keyboard cleaning it looks like a popcorn machine with Keys flying out it. like Stephen and Isaac, I forget how many keyboards I have replaced now. Phone Cord, bitten in half in 1 millisecond. TV remote buttons ripped out in a microsecond.... on and on. They should hire Dayo at the electronics recycle center.... Faster than the best machine they have.

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for the GreYt introduction. I love to hear stories, see photos and videos of our members birds.

In addition to what others have said, look up the Specifications to the Light. I use the Avian Sun 5.0 and the initial distance is 18" until the 30 day burn in time is over as it outputs a little too much power. Once the burn in stage is done the distance is 12" to the top of head they are standing on the perch and position they normally perch on most the time. Of course as others have said, it should be pointing down from above.

No Clipping is my vote and practice. Birds were meant to fly and they have a very strong and large portion of the brain devoted to it. It hampers their development when clipped. You will have a much happier and interesting bird if they are flighted.

Thinking About Larger Cage For Isaac - Questions
danmcq replied to Elvenking's topic in The GREY Lounge
Dayo has a very large cage. When he does become startled, he will sometimes either flap down to the bottom or he will flap quickly from one side to the other and grasp the side looking around to watch what startled him. A larger cage is much better in my opinion because they do not beat their wings against the sides of the cage as they are flapping. -
GreYt job! Thanks for the update.

Sophie is now interested in hanging pendant light
danmcq replied to kins2321@yahoo.com's topic in The GREY Lounge
Yes with Sterling..... put something terrifying there. -
It's wonderful that you take care of him like you do and you have a great resource to do the trimming. It is always stressful it seems when that must be done. He handled it well and just his back to you for a few hours in protest to let you know he did not appreciate it made him feel like he got you back. Now that your even and he will enjoy the desk time with you. Thanks for sharing this.
