1. O.K. let me try to post my picture. It is a picture that I use in my business cards. I hope you all don't mind. Under this white text box I only see the word submit.

Post edited by: raehamilton, at: 2007/05/29 19:26

baby squealing

xxbeckyxx and judygram, I read both of your post to my husband and he has agreed to stop giving her his finger to pick and/or suckle. As a new CAG owner he doesn't realize what he is doing and is learning. He certainly doesn't want to be cruel to Angie. He felt bad watching me cry today as we thought she had lead poisoning. Angie is also getting used to us. This is as new to her as is new to us. I thank you and welcome your comments and opinions, after all, this is the reason why I joined this forum. We certainly don't want her to be a bitter and know that she might go through a change in personality at puverty and maturity. We also bought a couple of books that we are reading to learn more about her and how to take proper care of her. xxbeckyxx since she is our first bird she might be just pecking us but she is certainly using a motion when she grabs our finger like she is suckling. I think she was just weaned when we brought her home 9 days ago. I tend not to pull my finger out of her way right away because I read in a few places and the breeder told me that if we show fear when she bites or suckles that she will learn to bite. Maybe some of you have other suggestions. Thank you so much.
3. Hi everyone, Thank you so much for all your responses that have certainly brought me peace of mind. The Vet from UC Davis called me back and told me the same as all you did. It has to do with the change in her diet since she is not acting any different. I've been watching her all day and have increased the amount of seeds back into her diet and she is now pooping green and white. I did give her a bit of cheese a couple of days ago. She started pooping brown yesterday afternoon. I will take it easy on what I give her till she gets used to her surroundings and do her food ratio as advised on the Harrison's web page. Thank GOD she is O.K. Thank you all for your responses and help.
4. Hi, My Angie started pooping brown yesterday and I just went on and googled brown poop in parrots and it came back with Lead Poisoning. I just call UC Davis and they told me they will call me back in 20 minutes. This is my first bird and I can't think of anything I gave her that had lead paint or that would give her lead poisoning. I am so sad, I can't believe this is happening. Has anyone else seen their parrot poop brown?

baby squealing

My Angie does a whistle type of noise in the morning or when we first walk into the living room. But when it's time to feed her she screams and she likes to pick at our hands and fingers. If she gets a hold of our finger she grabs it and she does a motion as if she is suckling from it like a baby. My husband encourages her to do it and I tell him to stop it. He says she is shaking his finger hello. I told him he is silly and that he needs to stop encouraging her because it may not hurt right now as she is only a bit over 3 months but that it will probably draw blood as she gets older and stronger. Once I give her the food bowl she doesn't want us near it and she screams if we get our hands close to her at that time. It sounds like most here have the same screaming going on at feeding time. Right? She's only been here for 9 days.
6. judygram, She told me is the shape of their head and I think she mentioned a couple of other things. I am going to visit her on Tuesday and I will make a list of what she uses to tell the age of her CAG's. Up to this point I feel so lucky to have found this person. Every time I have a question about Angie I call them and they are more than happy to talk to me about it. She even ignored her other phone line ringing to finish her conversation with me yesterday. The Vet tech had bought a bird from her many years ago and he had nothing but nice things to say about her.
7. Thank you both. I will try to post it as soon as I find my camera. My little girl asked me a question about it the other day and I forgot to take it from her. She says she doesn't remember where she put it, LOL. I bought Angie Kaytee Exact Nutrition in Every Bite "RAINBOW" pellets from the pet store as the Vet recommended. The following is a guaranteed analysis they claim to have on their food: Crude Protein (min.)........15.0% Crude Fat (min.)............ 6.0% Crude Fiber (max.).......... 5.0% Moisture (max.).............12.0% This is what they say on the packaging: "Exact Rainbow is designed to be the bird's sole diet. Limit additional foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, or other treats to 20% of the bird's total diet. When used as directed, no additional vitamin or mineral supplements are recommended." I wonder what Harrison's says on their packaging about their foods.
8. She finally pooped and it is a brown color. I let her have her seeds this evening and I will weigh her again in the morning and every morning at the same time to make sure she is no longer losing weigh. Thanks for the advise and I have gone to the Harrison's web site to look at the conversion and will follow it. I am a new CAG owner and she is my first bird. I am also feeding her fresh strawberries, frozen corn, frozen peas, jalapeno peppers, baked peaches, bananas, apples, spinach and a few other fruits. She only takes a few bites of each. She definately prefers the seeds but the VET told me those are only to be used as treats. I've noticed she is very talkative when she is hungry and she doesn't like to be bothered when she is eating.
9. HeatherStrella, Did you ever do a DNA test on Harrison? I bought my first CAG on 5/17/07 and the breeder told me that she guaranteed 100% that my CAG is a girl. We went ahead and let our 8 year old daughter name her Angie. Well, my neighbor saw her when I brought her home and she said that she definately didn't look like her Ginie and that she looked more like a male. Then I took Angie to the Vet and he said that since Angie was so talkative (making bird noises) in front of him that he was sure that my Angie was a Male. I'd just about had it with hearing that Angie is a male so I told my VET that I wanted a DNA test done. The test came back and she is in fact a GIRL. I didn't care if she was a girl or a boy but I just wanted to make sure for medical reasons and so people would stop saying she was a boy. The breeder was so right and she told me that in 15 years she has yet to be wrong and she guarantees the sex even without DNA testing.
10. I was told that male CAG's start talking earlier than the female CAG. My Angie is a little over 3 months old and I thought I heard her say "Hello" today. She only said it once and it wasn't that clear so I don't know if I am just hearing things. She is my first bird.
11. I'm a new CAG owner and I've been told not to put a mirror in my Angie's cage if I want her to get attached to me. I've been told some times they'd rather spend time with the mirror than with anyone else. I wouldn't know since I am new, just sharing what I've been told by many CAG owners and breeders of over 20 years.

potty training

How early do you start teaching them to go potty in a specific spot?
13. Talon, How would I know if it's really diarreah? Well, it is either clear or a little green liquid coming out of her.
14. Hi, I am a new CAG owner and new to this forum. I bought my Angie on 5/17/07 and the breeder told me that she was a little over 3 months. A week ago at the vet's office Angie weighed 14.1 oz = 399.735 grams. Today Angie weigh 12.3 oz = 348.705 grams. I took away her seeds a week ago at the advise of the vet. She didn't want to eat. She ate today the pellets for the first time a mixture of pellets, a little peanut butter with a little warm water. Now she has diarreah. She is sooooooo sweet and spends equal time with my husband, our 8 year old daughter and myself and doesn't seem to have a preference for any of us yet.
15. Hi Talon and thank you. Yes, the breeder told me that she was already weaned. She sent me home with a mixture of pellets and different types of seeds including sun flower seeds. Last week when I took Angie to the Vet he told me that seeds should only be given as a treat. He advised me to buy an all pellet food which I did. I took all the sun flower seeds out of her food and she refused to eat her food. Last week she weigh 14.1 oz at the Vets. I found my food scale and she weighs 12.3 oz today. I did what I read on this forum today. I put pellets, a little water and a little peanut butter in a small bowl, heated it up and Angie is eating like a champion. The problem is that now she has diarreah. Should I be worried? I've been trying to find my digital camera and as soon as I find it I will post pictures. My husband found a toy facifier that has a ribbon and a clip at the end of it. He clipped it to his shirt, she climed on his shoulder and he put it in her mouth and she walks around with it in her mouth. It is so cute. I have to find my camera so I can take a picture and post it. Please anyone, if you have any advise or comments I would appreciate them. Thank you.

Post edited by: raehamilton, at: 2007/05/27 19:24
16. Monique, I am new to this forum. Now I am worried. I brought my CAG home on 5/17/07 and I was told by the person that sold her to me that she was fully weaned and a few days past 3 months. She did warn me that Angie would probably lose weigh due to being in new surroundings and maybe not eating as much. I couldn't feel her breast bone before and now I can. She wasn't eating as much because I took away her seeds. The breeder also sent me home with a mixture of pellets & seeds. She also told me that this is what she has been feeding all her AG's for over 20 years and has never had problems. I bought Angie an all pellets food as advised by my Vet and she refused to eat it. I read another post on this forum with suggestions on how to get AG's to eat pellets. I added a little water and a little peanut butter, warmed it up and she is eating all her food now. The problem is that now she has diarreah. Last week at the Vet's she weighed 14.1 oz today she weighs 12.3 oz but she finally started eating. Anyone please, should I be worried?
17. Hi all, I am new here. I brought Angie home on 5/17/07. She is approximately 3 months and I had a DNA test to make sure of the sex. How old is a CAG usually weaned by? The lady I bought Angie from said she is already weaned. Can anyone tell me if frozen vegetables O.K. for CAG?
