I just saw your baby and she is adorable, they sure are cute when they are young. Like LovemyGreys said, put her in her cage and leave her for a while to settle down then open her cage and see if she will venture out. You can take your cues from her if she is ready to explore a little and have some time to spend with you. She will adjust to a new cage when you first bring her home better than later on when it is necessary to get a new cage, then is when she will likely balk at having to adjust to a new one. But as babies they take to changes more readily. Spend lots of time with your baby but not so much that you cannot continue with that amount for they get used to it and it will cause problems later if you slack up. I think you will be fine so don't worry so much, just enjoy your new baby and love it with all your heart.

I personally have a split level cage in that one side is domed on top and the other side has a playtop that is lower than the other side. The playtop has a slide out tray underneath a toy hook and perch where she likes to stay when she is out. I don't really like the cages that have the playtop on top of the cage but to each their own. It is just as easy to clean under the playtop as the cage itself so that is not a problem. She likes to climb up on top of the play hook and sit, its the highest point and when she wants to come down, she slides down it with the greatest of ease. You can find some good cages on the internet, and Makena can help guide you to ones that ship to Hawaii for the least amount of money. Sorry Makena for volunteering you but I didn't think you would mind.

You are going to find a grey is an awesome creature and you will wonder why it took you so long to finally decide to get one. You do have experience with parrots but greys are a little different from cockatoos. You are doing the right thing to read thru the different topics and threads here, we have a lot of good information compiled here and a lot of it will come in handy in the future. He is going to be cautious and leary of you for a while but with time and patience you will be able to bring him around and make a fine companion, he just needs your love and support. Don't rush him, give him plenty of time to adjust. I look forward to seeing some photos of him, and by the way, how old is he? I don't think it will matter what sex the grey is, it is going to be more of an individual personality thing, they choose who they want to bond with and there is not much you can do about it but accept it and live with it.

Fils, I am so sorry to hear this, but I expected it from your previous post right before mine, and Mark gave you some good advice as far as it being inevitable to just make it as easy for him as possible. I sit here typing with tears rolling down my cheeks, but you did all you could, he was already far too gone to bring back, but he knows you loved him, so don't blame yourself. Talk to someone knowledgeable before you go ahead on suing the pet shop, they may be at fault but it is not going to bring your grey back, just don't do any business with them anymore. If we can be of any further help to you, just let us know, but do know we do care and our hearts are breaking for you too.

Isn't that always the way, you spend good money on toys and then they take all of 15 minutes to destroy it.

And that is why there is no rabies, they do that to prevent it, but it is painful for the families of those pets that have to be quarantined until the grace period is over.

That is fascinating, Tracy but so true, it makes it more valuable, but some of the best things to give them to play with don't cost a dime.

This is so heartwarming to hear that your hard work is paying off and I couldn't be happier for you. You feel like you are on top of the world and you have every right to feel proud of yourself, so go ahead and pat yourself on the back, we would physically do it for you but the miles apart prevent that.

I know about the quarantine of animals brought into Hawaii from the mainland, I had some cousins who used to live there and when they brought their dog over, he had to spend a few months in quarantine before they could take him to the island they were living on, now that sucks to have to leave your pet like that, and I can't imagine how that would be with a grey, a nightmare of epic proportions I'm sure.:ohmy:

Thats such a lovely story, Joe, and this is a good subject to bring up about how we met the one we love. Now do you want the one about the one I married or the one of my current lover, because I could tell you both, but I think I will stick to the one I am married to at the moment. We met in high school of all places, can you believe that, and I knew he was the one I wanted to spend my life with. We both grew up in the same county but we went to different grade schools and did not meet until high school. We got married in October 1967 in our senior year and our daughter was born five days before graduation, you do the math. I know, we fooled around and got caught, but unlike some other young men who would have said its your problem, he stood by my and we were married and it will be 40 years next month. I should get a medal or something for sticking with him for that long, it hasn't always been easy, but hey we made our bed and now we lay in it. You can pm me for the other story.

If I were you Fils, I would travel as far as I had to to find an avian vet or someone who knows about birds for the best care you can find. Just any kind of vet won't do, I don't care if you have to travel all day to get there, it is imperative that you find some help for this bird and NOW, I can't stress this enough. The grey needs help and needs it NOW, do what you have to, but get the proper help or you will lose this bird, I know it and it breaks my heart to think that this will happen. Move heaven and earth but get that help. I will keep you and this bird in my thoughts and prayers. Keep us informed for I worry about this situation.

The pressure, I can feel the pressure from you guys, and I am getting fired up all right, you just wait, I am going to blow you all away, you will be groveling at my feet after this one.

And they can be cheaper than bird toys so you save some money to boot.

No, tomatoes are ok to feed greys, I seem to remember something about the leaves and/or stems of the tomato plant not being suitable for them to eat, but why escapes me.

My gosh, I can't believe that most of you that have posted in this thread have not eaten a papaya before. I have tried them and loved them, and they are available most of the time at the grocery store, but are not as good as the ones Kristin can get in Hawaii. They are very flavorful and I enjoyed lots of them when I visited Hawaii, yummy.

Josey was nearly 1 year old before she said her first word clearly, before that it was jibberish and you could not understand what she was saying. She got the wolf whistle down early though, my hubby saw to that. And she says words and phrases exactly like I say them, and laughs like me also.

Hello and welcome to the family, Tommy, glad you could join us. I love your story of how you got your grey to trust and love you after having 3 previous owners. It just goes to show how much the right people and love and devotion goes to turn this grey from a biting one into a loving happy one. I am so proud of you for taking this grey and turning his life around and making him and you both happy in the process. Maybe you could share some of your secrets you used in the last 5 years to gain his trust to help other members who rescue a grey from a similar situation. Five years is a long time but with 3 previous owners he probably had a lot of baggage with him and it does take time, something the previous 3 owners didn't have the patience or time to try to accomplish what you obviously have been able to do. If you have a photo of your grey you would like to post, we would love to see him, and what is his name, I assume yours is Tommy. I award you extra karma for your success story, you are truly an inspiration to us all.

Very good advice Kristin, breeders do ship birds all the time but the best place for him would be in the cabin with you, just check around and find one that does allow that.

These are just too cute Kristin, she is certainly enjoying that papaya, and I would too if I had it. Thanks for sharing these with us, and now the fun begins, you have to clean up everything after.
