Time and patience are what is key to living with a grey in the house for you can't rush bonding or the trust you build with your grey, it has to be earned but it sounds like you are off to a great start and you should do fine. Flame is an appropriate name for a sun conure, I named my sun Sunny and I think it is one of the most popular names for that particular species of conure, how old is Flame, Sunny is getting close to 6 years old now.

Please do not cover the cage during the daytime hours as that will not accomplish anything. I think you have hit the nail on the head when you say it is driving your wife crazy, what does she do and how does she react to the squawking? That may be the clue that whatever that reaction is what is reinforcing her behavior. The squawking needs to be ignored, I know that isn''t easy but its the only way your grey will get the message that it accomplishes nothing, stop giving the seeds as she sees that as a reward. How much time does your grey spend outside of the cage each day? Does she do this squawking at certain times of the day or what else is going on when she does this? Are you two usually in the room when this happens or out of her sight? Please give us a little more information so we can be of more help to you with your problem. BTW, what is your grey's name?

Hello Linda and welcome to our family, so glad to hear you have adopted Dante and have given him a new forever home. I too have a sun conure along with my grey and then a cockatiel was added just recently, it showed up in my backyard one day, I never was able to find the owners so it is part of my flock now. Suns are great little companions and one of the brightest colored of the parrot world. You are doing the right thing in taking Dante to be checked out by an avian vet as it is possible that there is a medical reason for his plucking problem but if not then we have some knowledgeable members here who may be able to shed some light on why he does it. It could just be that he was not given the attention he needs or desires in his former home but greys will pluck for many reasons and sometimes it is hard to pinpoint why. If you have read some of the threads here you will see that a lot of us are against wing clipping, after all they were born with wings and therefore meant to fly but do ask your vet even though a lot of them will say to clip the wings especially if you have young children in the house for they are notorious for leaving doors ajar. Please do read the threads on clipping wings before you go to the vet so you can be more informed and decide for yourself whether Dante will be clipped or not. Some here are passionate about not clipping wings but each grey owner has to make that decision for their self and no one should criticize you for your decision if you decide you have to clip his wings. It sounds like Dante has started settling into his new home already but realize that greys who come from previous owners usually come with baggage and he has not unpacked his yet so be prepared to see more of his true personality as time goes on, not trying to scare you but just be prepared if he doesn't stay as sweet as he is right now as this is the honeymoon phase. It will help to read as many of the threads about rehomed greys that you can as you will find similar situations that may provide a look into what you are facing and maybe solutions. Thats excellent that he is eating Harrison's High Potency pellets, your vet will probably be very pleased with that as many do recommend Harrisons pellets and good that he is eating veggies, more veggies than fruit and do have a look around the bird food room for other suggestions for what to feed Dante to give him a well balanced diet. We love pictures here so if you have some of Dante you would share with us we would love to see him even if he is plucked as we see the inner beauty of a grey and I have never met an ugly one yet.

That is a sweet pic of the two of you going for a kiss, it shows the love you have for one another. I must comment on the other picture, is that tree your son is on with Cocoa outside or in an enclosed area for I don't see any type of harness on Cocoa, even if he is clipped he could take flight if he catches a breeze or is spooked, I would hate for him to escape, not chastising you but just calling it to your attention.

My diary of the first days with my"foster" grey
judygram replied to cass's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
He/she sounds like a wonderful grey and you are doing such a good job with him/her right now, I really hope the owner is found but if not he/she couldn't have landed in better hands than yours. -
She is a beautiful thing sitting there on the top of the chair in all her glory, you must be very proud of her. Yes she knows if she wants the handfeeding or not and usually the night time one is the last to go, something about needing a warm belly before retiring for the night. She is anxious for the day to start, to get out and play than to eat so if she is holding her weight then she is doing fine, she looks fine from the pic as she is healthy looking.

Very interesting read Dan and so true, we all need to do our part to keep this earth from becoming barren as we are destroying it more and more every day, thanks for sharing that with us.

Sanggay I have to say you have a weird sense of humor as I almost didn't watch the video for I feared it was about a grey who got caught in something and died but you need to word your threads a little more carefully or you will cause a few of us to have a heart attack, mine was in my throat for a moment then I realized it was just one of your goofy moments with Cocoa. She is a good sport to allow that hand to go around her neck in strangulation style, thanks for sharing that with us for even though it make me gasp in horror at first glance it made me laugh.

I am so sorry for your loss but at least he is not in pain any longer as he is flying free over the Rainbow Bridge, thank you and your mom for making his last home a wonderful one and for loving him unconditionally.

Hello CocoaRocks and welcome to our family, so glad you could take in your father's grey and continue to give it love and attention that your Dad obviously did and now you are being rewarded for your hard work. You are beautiful and Cocoa sees that, I think it was meant for you two to be together, he is doing wonders for your self confidence and he knows he has someone who loves him as much as his former owner so the both of you are truly blessed. You can glean much knowledge from our many threads so do browse thru them at your leisure and don't hesitate to ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. We would dearly love to see some pictures of Cocoa if you have any you would share with us.

Wow Billy and Echo are two lucky fids to have owners so handy and creative to make them something to play on and with, gosh my grey wants to come over for a playdate.
-
Wow thats a amazing wingspan and I hope it makes it home before it meets up with an airplane, Gandolf you get home.

Miss Hannah is quite photogenic all wrapped up in a towel after her bath, what a cutie and she is so adorable asleep on mama's chest, she is precious, thanks for sharing those pics with us.

This is so heartbreaking and I keep thinking of how so sad this situation is but I will be thinking of you, Billy and your mum tomorrow, please let us know what happens.

I don't know much about green cheek conures but I have a sun conure and she can be loud sometimes but that is a trait of most all conures, they are screamers but it is not all the time. Conures are fun little pets and my sun conure loves nothing else but to ride around on my shoulder when she is out of the cage, she goes with me wherever I go in the house. She can be sweet as honey one second and bite the crap out of me the next but generally she is very easy going just feisty as she doesn't take any crap. I would ask more questions about the pair before committing to getting them but they can make very good companions. I have to agree with Dan about the gloves, you don't want to wear them and the bites from a conure aren't going to be that bad, just nippy kind of bites that pinch more than break the skin, my conure has never brought blood.

Looks like the last remaining clipped feathers will soon molt out and then she will be ready to take on the world or at least your home, she is a beauty and she will get better as time goes on, thanks for sharing the pics with us.

Feathers are fun to play with :P

Yoshi is so adorable and my favorite of the pics is the last one too, how cute is that, thanks for sharing a few pictures with us. -
Thats great and so true, thanks for the laughs!
-
Yep the old sucker punch but Josey doesn't play that game but Dave has the right idea to not touch the skin but just the feathers for they allow the touch to travel down the shaft to the skin and that is all the touching they really want anyways.
-
I am so sorry to hear of this sad news, poor Billy must be suffering and the avian vet feels this is the best course of action to take but so sad his life will be cut short but you did what you could to help him, please give your mum my condolences.
-
Wow I am impressed with his progress, you have certainly improved his life which has improved his looks in leaps and bounds, congrats on a job well done as it shows what a little work and much patience will accomplish, thanks for sharing the before and after pictures.

I love watching Alfie even if I can't hear her and I bet she would pull a lot more than just what you have on that phone to get to it, lengthen it and grab the camera, this time no swearing!
-
Now that is one video I want to see and hear, the lovely Alfie and her broadway version of Annie, should be a hoot!
