I potty trained my bird without realizing that's what I was doing.I thought I was just talking to her. I would say "you go poopie" everytime Harrison would poop. Then she started saying it randomly. Then she linked it together and says it right before she poops. So, if I have her out, she most times will say "go poopie" and I put her on her perch and she poops...or if she hasn't gone in a while, I'll put her on her perch and tell her to go and she does. There are so many ways of doing it...

I kind of have two jobs...the one that I have to leave the house for is Sign Language Interpreter for an elementary school. Basically, I have a deaf student in a room of 30 normal hearing students. I sit in front of her and sign everything the teacher/kids say. It's fun...there's more to it than that but that's my main job there...this year I'm in 5th grade. Job 2 I used to work in a group home for disabled deaf adults. One of the residents was a woman named ..well I'd rather not say...confidentiality reasons. She's hearing but has to sign to communicate. She and I hit it off from day one...anyway a few years later she had the opportunity to kick that group home to the curb and live on her own....with a roommate. I thought, "I'll do it temporarily..." Well, it's 12 years later and we're still together. I can't imagine life without her...basically my husband and I help her with regular stuff...making meals...cleaning...shopping...fun stuff...etc. She's a real kick in the pants...while I'm at work, she goes to a job she has...then we're all together in the evenings. She visits her family every other weekend so my husband and I have a few days off a month. It's not really like working though..ya know?

Post edited by: HeatherStrella, at: 2008/04/20 21:18

Some of you remember almost a year ago I went to a pet/feed store near my friend's house...they had parrots in horrid conditions...there was a Grey there who had chewed off his tail and just looked so sad...poop all over the cages...dirty water...etc...I reported them to the authorities and got pretty good results right away...anyway, I went back there today with camera in hand. I was expecting to see what I had seen the first time I was there...but nooooo, it was much much different...so much better. The cages were in good condition...food and water was good...they were snuggling with a cockatoo...I fell in LOVE with that cockatoo there. If I didn't have a husband, I'd have that bird right now...LOL. She was so sweet!! I asked about the Grey above because I didn't see him there. The woman who works there (I think she remembers me as the person who reported them) said that someone bought him and he is so much better now. He's allowing people to handle him, talking, etc...she was telling me as if she was excited to say it so I believe her. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you guys...those of you who remember those awful photos I posted here...yay...no more bad photos.

Hey...believe me, I'm not complaining about this...Harrison is sometimes very clingy. She won't step down for me....and she just absolutely has to be on me. When I say she won't step down, I mean I go to put her in her cage or on her play gym thingy and she gets off with one foot but holds on to my finger TIGHT with her other foot. Sometimes I just stand there with her with my hand "stuck" and wait for her to let go, sometimes I manage to get my finger out of her grip and then most times I just let her have her way and I take her with me. So, I'm just curious if anyone else's Grey does this...??

I potty trained my female...I would say "you go poopie" after she'd poop...now she says it when she has to poop and if she's somewhere I don't want her to poop, I put her on her perch and she poops there. Harrison was very young, though, when she started talking and she's talking up a storm now at 2 years old...does your bird talk? If so, it'll probably be easy to teach her something like what I explained.

Ten Things We Might Not Know About You
HeatherStrella replied to Bailey's topic in Off-Topic Discussions
1. I'm 5'10" and about 160 pounds...I'm on the South Beach diet and have lost 20 pounds...a few more to go 2. I'm a Sign Language Interpreter 3. I was born and raised in California. 4. I'm 36 years old. 5. I've been married to a 49 year old man for 6 years. 6. I have no children and don't plan to have any. 7. Most of my immediate family has died, I have one brother left. 8. I love animals and have a bird, dog, and several reptiles. But I hate bugs. I don't feed my reptiles crickets because of this, I use meal worms instead, I can handle those. 9. I've lived with a developmentally disabled woman for 12 years and plan to do so until the end. She's like family to me and my husband now...he married into it. lol 10. I no longer have a couch. It is now a bean bag chair that doesn't have those little beads...instead, it's filled with memory foam and is ohhhh sooooo comfy...Harrison likes to walk around on it too... NO MORE COUCHES :woohoo: :woohoo: -
Well, Harrison started clucking like a chicken and we don't know where she got it...it's kind of a cartoon chicken sound so she may have gotten it from the TV. Well, she learns vocab so fast and all so my husband decided to teach her to do the rooster call...cockadoodle-doo...and then say "good morning"...she learned it pretty fast but has gotten lazy recently. So now she says "cocka-doo doo" "cocka-doo doo"...over and over...it's quite funny to hear.
-
Something to ponder...this picture was taken when Harrison was thought to be a BOY...that's why the binki is blue...now I wish I had a picture of her with a pink binki...I just thought I'd add that in there...
-
Harrison does the same thing...it's funny to see someone else describe it. I let her hang out by the computer but if she gets between me and the keyboard she goes back to the jungle gym thingy. They say you have to pick 'em up and put 'em back 10,000 times before they learn and even then you'll have to do it one more time ...who is 'they'...I don't know....ha. she's young, she'll get it. You're a good birdy mama.

froso, you really should make a new thread...people won't see what you wrote here.

OMG...wow..cool...thanks!! Congrats to Spookyhurst and Talonsis...they were all great pictures.
