Sometimes I think it would be nice to out these idiots now that breeders know better. Sounds like this guy is deliberately cutting corners with his baby Greys just to push them out the door as fast as possible.

Can I teach my Grey to lay on his back or is this a long shot?

First off - sorry about the length of the video. I made it while multi-tasking at work, so not a lot of time to 'cut the fat'. Plus I primarily made it for family that want to see Greycie and I know they would prefer a longer video. I also screwed up and pitched the originals so now I've lost the ability to edit any further....big dummy. Someone in another thread asked about getting a bird to lay on their backs. Greycie WAS NOT a bird who naturally wanted to lay on her back and let me play with her. However, she would hang from her tree/boing/ropes etc so I knew I had something to work with. One day she slid down the front of my shirt and just hung there. I knew that was my chance. I cupped her, and got her to release her talons, then I did the naughty-naughty, I rolled her red tail over and there she was laying in my hand. My thumb got bit good! REAL good!!!! And I didn't learn my lesson either because I kept at it daily. This is the end result. She now LOVES LOVES LOVES to play on her back with me. She will even fly onto the back of my chair and nip at my ear trying to get my hand. Once she gets my hand she will pull it over on top of her and I help flip her, then the wrestling starts. Sometimes she will still get nippy if something happens that scares her while we're birdy wrestling. All of this video is taken on top of the fridge...her absolute favorite place to play and watch what's happening in her kitchen.

There are bird people and there are other people. Sounds like you guys know what you're doing and Bailey has surely picked up on that. I'll repeat this story here: I took our Greycie to one of my daughters races and lots of people were interested in having a look at Greycie and most wanted to touch her but of course most showed fear that even I could pick up on. You can bet Greycie was picking up on it AND using it to her advantage to keep them away. One of my daughters friends, Sherry (who is my age), came up and asked if she could hold Greycie. I asked if she just want to pet her first. She said "oh birds love me - watch". She commenced to boldly tell Greycie to step-up and shoved her finger right onto her breast bone. Greycie stepped right up without a growl as if she had known Sherry her whole life. I laugh about it and tell people, yeah 'Sherry' could have told even me to step-up and I would have....she was that confident with Greycie.

Now I have to get in on this Grey hat pic thread. These are pics of my bosses bird 'Seawee'. He's Chinese so I don't know if that name has any meaning but I think it's a cute name for a baby Grey. He's not a member here and he just happened to show me these pics on his phone yesterday. I immediately thought of this thread and asked him to send them to me.

If your bird will already let you lay him down on his back and support him, he's well on his way to living life as a bat Our Grey did the same as yours, hanging and playing so it was a natural progression to her learning to trust me playing with her upside down. She was very growly and not-so-sure about it at first and still reverts back slightly when she gets a little spooked. She's now one of those birds that will grab my hand and pull it over on top of her while she flips and then wants to wrestle. She also has developed a thing for what I call bouncing the baby. She loves to lay on her back in my hand completely unsupported while I bounce her and let her get that feeling of weightlessness on the way back down. She always lets out little happy sounds when we play like that. Another of her favorites is playing birdy hockey on top of the fridge. We have a round yogurt cap that I try to shoot between her legs. She'll go after it and once she has it will flip upside down and play with it. I'll have to post the video sometime. Just keep doing it and your bird will eventually learn to trust you and you can start doing more and more. -
Where did you find it for $19? That was close to the original price before Amazon prices changed.

I had that exact avian bulb in my cart until the price went up and then non-eligible for free shipping. I also decide the best mobile mount would be a clamp light.

Can no longer keep my African Grey

Forget you he won't. I've posted here about my CAG that I got when I was 19. I lost her to a divorce when I was 24 and she ended up with an aunt. I saw her again for the first time after 20+ years and she fell right back into a role we used to do together that my aunt had never witnessed the whole time she's had her. However my aunt is taking very good care of her and she doesn't "need" me until my aunt can no longer care for her...and back she will come. -
Experimented with a recipe tonight using a cornbread mix and some Ninja blended veggies, baby food and some nuts. Turned out somewhat wet even though though the edges were getting crispy. Need to find a way to dry the mix up a bit. Greycie inhales it as it is but would like to make it a bit drier.

So Dan, is Dayo referring to you as the meatloaf ... haaahaaaa... that's too funny!

If you haven't seen this, it's cute: Einstein ring tones

I use one. We also have a juicer that leaves behind pulp. Before I had the birds, I would use the food processor to chop up scraps for our chickens. They (the chickens) also get the pulp from the juicer. I noticed that once I started giving my hens the pulp that they started to have really nice looking plumage. Don't think it was a coincidence. Our house chickens, as I like to call our parrots, get pulp and chop as well. The food processor is messy but I only bust it out when I'm freezing their meal packs.

Track morning weights. That's the easiest way to monitor any changes.
-
Just the opposite. I sit there waiting for the minutes to pass so I can get some birdy time before I have to head out.

Hello everyone! I am new member from Macedonia.

That is quite the story! You sure you didn't lose Poly in Washington D.C. (haahaaahaahaaaahhaaa). Our lil Greycie went on the lamb also for two days straight. She had the help of my sister-in-law who definitely should have known better with a flighted bird of her own. We however did not have to pay a ransom to get Greycie back as she had perched herself in a tree near a cycling trail that I always took her on. Your pictures are interesting. Is Poly tethered in the second photo? Someone asked the sex of your bird. I'm guessing female. I have 50% chance of looking real smart on this one -
Sounds like Sterling Gris really knows how to work it work it.

We get called the same way we call the dogs: <whistle><whistle> "COME ON!!!". If either of us head down the hallway or towards the door leading to the garage or the door leading outside...we get called with great fervency.

Our little Caique is the screamer of the house. He's the youngest but Greycie seems to be the one learning all his habits: from roaming the floors, head-bobbing, cage-wrestling, to that wonderful Caique scream. I could've just gotten another cat.
-
My wife is having issues with Greycie's and Toby's morning and evening screechy time. They don't hold a candle to those macaws. There was a macaw a couple of acres away from our place that we could hear screeching. Every time I could hear him I remembered why I could never have a macaw. There is also a man and his wife a mile or so away that has B&G. He's loud and super sweet with his momma.

Interesting comment I read that will always stick with me - "it's almost unheard of for a flighted Grey to pluck". I think it was Ray or Dan. I hope it's true. I've had a plucking Grey, it's not pretty. I love my feathered baby.

Good stuff. First time I've come across this thread.

Silly hoomans, don't you know that certain colors can KILL!! We use a hand-held steamer to clean boings and orbits etc.

KimKim, I'm guessing that your Grey was not flighted to begin with? You mention that he takes a lap around the room. You might try regular flying sessons to get your Grey used to controlled flights so that when the startled flight comes along he is conditioned to his surroundings. We fly Greycie twice a day mainly to burn off some of her jet fuel and calm her down. She used to have a problem with our full width mirror on one of the walls but has learned it's not another room she can fly into.
