I can tell you this about our Caique: I got lazy one day and just put him to bed in a cage that was on the floor. Talk about a pissed off bird the next day. Higher is better and they'll just be generally more relaxed. That's our experience.

What size Pack-O-Bird do you own? M or the special "African Grey"
SRSeedBurners replied to Michellec's topic in Cages & Homes
Looks like a happy grey in her Pak-o-birdy. Bet she puts it to good use. -
She's a very sweet prairie dog. But like parrots, they are wild animals and have the instinct to bite. The neighbors were feeding her (which is why I had to build a containment fence, she was going over for treats) and she instinctively took the end of one of their fingers. There's a video on youtube or maybe it was America's Funniest videos of someone giving a kitten cpr. That was going through my head when I was trying to save 'Peaches'. I had her laid in my hand the same way massaging her chest and abdomen all the while doing compressions. Can't believe it worked. I need to post some video of her on here, she's a real cutie.

Get Dayo a toy hammer and see if he licks it!

Funny story - We have a pet prairie dog that lives outside. I have her in a containment fence which uses an electric wire 3 inches off the ground to train her to stay in. I screwed up and used the wrong charger when I first set it up. I thought she was still in her cat crate when we were going to test it but she slipped out and ran straight for the fence. I didn't know it but she got herself caught under the wire and stunned then began to cook. I only noticed because I smelled her burnt fur. It took me a while to get to where I could cut the power and was sure I lost her. Anyway, I go get her and she's limp, no heartbeat, no breathing. I commence chest compressions on my prairie dog. It took about 1.5 minutes before I could get a pulse going but no breathing so I started pumping air into her with my mouth. I finally got her breathing. After that it took about 45 minutes before she could move again on her own but overnight she sort of just recovered. No lasting effects that we know of. My teenager couldn't believe I saved the prairie dog. Her comments were, you can never tell Marietta (my wife). She's right, she'd kill me. The prairie dog has to stay in this fence because she bit the neighbors and sent them to the hospital for stitches.

Changing Raw Peasnuts into Human Grade Peanuts
SRSeedBurners replied to Dave007's topic in Bird Food
I don't know why I said walnut. I meant pecans. We have multiple pecan trees on our property. It's a race to see who can get them first: us, the humans wandering around looking for free nuts or the squirrels. Squirrels are winning. -
Changing Raw Peasnuts into Human Grade Peanuts
SRSeedBurners replied to Dave007's topic in Bird Food
What about other nuts? This time of year we're finding all sorts of nuts in the stores (and under our walnut trees). Should they be roasted as well? -
Love that falsetto ending there. Someone has been practicing.

Our conure wiggles his tongue and he's about to take a chunk out of you. Greycie only does it perched on the shower rod after I touch her beak with my wet finger, like she's licking the water off the sides of her beak.

We have a similar routine. Every now and then I break with protocol and try and shortcut. Greycie lets me know she's not happy. Cute pic!

This is a first - I've never seen these birds getting along so nicely. They must be thankful or something

That's the size we have. It's only suitable for a timeout cage or a feeding cage which is what we use it for. I also put Greycie in it with me in the garage when I'm on my trainer, she'll settle onto the swing I have in there and start making happy noises. I guess it would work for a sleeping cage which is what you mentioned.
-
We have the second cage and I highly recommend it. Our Greycie goes crazy in it as it's too small as an everyday cage. We use it for the Caique and our Jardines we used to have. It's very well built. I found it for substantially less than the price you show though. If I find the link, I'll post it.

I only use FB to keep tabs on real friends (I think I have 1) and psuedo-friends(the other ~120). One is a real drama queen that I haven't figured out why I haven't hit the unfriend feature yet. I have hidden most of his posts though. Among my psuedo-friends I can name: - Einstein the Texas Talking parrot - Felix Hawk King of Everything Birds fame - Disco the Parakeet - Grumpy Cat - NASA Curiosity Mars Rover - The Chicken Whisperer - For the Love of Chicken - Kookaburra Bird Shop Then old high school acquaintances and family make up the rest of it. FB is mostly entertainment from that list of psuedofriends. I love the birdy ones.

Anyone know who the beautiful Grey that adorns the homepage and the banner is? Know the story behind him? (looks like a male anyway...)

I'm wondering if the bird babysitter DVD was a good idea?
SRSeedBurners replied to Michellec's topic in The GREY Lounge
I just saw on Einstein's FB feed that his parront's are posting a solid hour of him talking non-stop. I've always wanted to put him on a loop, Greycie gets totally absorbed watching him. Hoping she'll pick some of his words up. He's a cutie. -
Inara - let me help a little: He's sweet, he has an Elvis haircut and he loves his little cheekys scritched.
-
No sleep hut here. Greycie likes to sleep on her pvc swing I built. The breeder told us she likes to sleep on her swing so I made her one and she loves it.

Our birdy floors are going in currently. Tile in the kitchen, dining, front entry room (whatever that's called) and laundry. Distressed hardwood in the living room and hallways. My wife wouldn't let me set the carpet on fire before they removed it - probably a smart move. The house is 32 years old and it was the original carpet and counters so you can imagine what it was like. Lookup 'Butcher block Formica' - that's the crap countertop we've been living with for 13 years and some nasty linoleum floor along with dingy dirty smelling carpet. Our place was embarrassing to bring anyone over. Yesterday we ran into a snag that has stopped the hardwood installation until we can get a foundation company out. So now we have a concrete living room and hallway. I love it. Anything but that nasty carpet. Would love to hear what you all use to keep tile and hardwood floors clean. Muse - do you have a 'professional grade steam cleaner' picked out? I want one too but no idea about brands at that level.

Dad to a 19 year old - with a cat: Use a crate. We crate our two mutts, not because we feel they're a danger to the birds, but because they won't stop wrestling in the house. Our cat is not allowed to roam free with the birds unsupervised. In my house - the birds are #1 priority and everyone knows it. If they don't like it, wife: I'll move out and take my birds with me; daughter: if she doesn't like it, she can get out.

Looks exactly like Greycie's and Tobie's when they get watery foods. Color is good. Try giving a pickled beet if you want a real fright Looks like bloody poop. We've scared the heck out of ourselves a couple of times when we've done this.

I will be gone for two days is that ok to leave a grey home?
SRSeedBurners replied to JanMarie's topic in The GREY Lounge
Where were you when I was a teenager? Pay me to play with a bird, I'd feel like I was stealing your money! -
Can I teach my Grey to lay on his back or is this a long shot?
SRSeedBurners replied to tankaray's topic in Training
Sorry Nancy, didn't mean to insinuate that was my Greycie laying on the piano. I found that video because I follow Einsteins feed. Greycie likes to wrestle on her back but I highly doubt she will lay there calmly like that for that long. I have a piano I'll have to try. However I can't play it We'll have to pretend.
