  1. Welcome - great write up. Your household sounds a lot like ours. The humans seem to be the ones being trained to mimic birdy language vs. the birds learning ours. Mine is pretty much a shoulder bird, daddy's girl and we've literally started calling her my little shadow. Our Grey is bonded most with me but she loves to go see mommy and even big sissy when she's in town. We don't have any strictly one-person birds here since they all get messed with by everyone. You can tell their preferences though. We also make fun of Greycie's little growl. When she does it I always have to tell her something to the affect: "oh...you giving Daddy the growly growly. You think I'm scared of your growly growly..." Love to see some pictures!
  2. Nothing like sharing treats to findcyour way to the birdys heart. We like pics too. I LOVE seeing pics of everybody's greys. At least you wont have to put up with the stubborn-ass adolescent stage.
  3. Just make sure you are not getting scammed. Re-homes can be the best.
  4. Oh wow, he's almost fully feathered. I didn't realize they grow that fast.
  5. Saw GreycieMae just sitting in her swing this morning and no one to push. She loves to swing on anything and this one she really likes too.
  6. What kind of wire are you using? Wondering if you can get closeup photos of the joints and wire connections. I'm thinking about extending GreycieMae's aviary into a 'L' shape since we have an extra enclosure just sitting in a box. I need to create the portion in the middle out of scratch though. P.S. did you see the hail damage in our area yesterday? New roofs and windows on a lot of the houses in our area including ours.
  7. Lucky Grey Bird! He looks like a real sweety.
  8. He sure looks proud of his little self.
  9. I'd wager most here worry more about their birds then their own kids. I do. 100%. My birdies can't take care of themselves in our world. Makes me sad thinking about it.
  10. I've considered the same. I finally came to the conclusion that my daughter will be entrusted in their care if she proves worthy over the next few years. They will come with a large trust fund. If she doesn't pan out, then like others have said here, some sanctuary would probably be happy to have them. I know a lawyer in Maine that worked a water-tight trust fund for the owner's birds. Those adult kids tried everything they could to break it but never succeeded. Hoping to set up something similar.
  11. We've had two re-homes and three babies. I've absolutely fallen for the re-homes and kind of look on our babies as spoiled brats that don't know how bad it can get. We've lost both of the rehomes and it absolutely tore us up. One I lost almost three years ago and still have trouble looking at her photos. Re-homes are diamonds in the rough. Both of re-homes were leery of us at first and the small breakthroughs are what make them all worth it. They're a different kind of experience but very worth it.
  12. I had to start eating healthier because most days, there's no separating my fids from my dinner plate, especially my Caique. Ever try taking food from a Caique? haaahaaaa
  13. I would definitely like to know what pellet. Most are corn based which is cheap filler added as primary ingredient to most pet foods to pad the manufacturers bottom line. Then you get to the 'good' pellets like Harrison's (I feed the high potency as their lifetime is corn based) and my birds gain too much weight and won't eat anything else (veggies fruits etc...). TOPs makes a high quality non-corn based pellet but I've never tried.
  14. Some good facts there but looks like she's trying to compartmentalize the two. Check out Felix on FB and Princess Joupyter of Project Perry. Joupyter (timneh) is definitely a PRINCESS of regal air and dignity. My Grey is probably one of the silliest birds around. These birds, just like humans are some percentage nature and the rest nurture. All my birds tend to be very playful and rowdy and that's entirely due to the way I handle them. We're a very playful house and a Timneh or a Congo would end up with some percentage of that just by living here.
  15. I leave a radio on for my birds during the day. They have a bird room that only one is out at a time unsupervised. Our Grey spends most of her time climbing the ropes and swinging, hanging, chewing the wood work, walking the floor looking for toys. She does like to watch TV with me. I don't have one for them in their bird room.
  16. Mine likes music on the TV/stereo. She still amazes us how she will start to dance a little when she hears a favorite song. Last night she was watching the AMAs with us and singing the song of her people along with it.
  17. I actually read that article long before I got my Grey. It seems to infer that Timnehs might make the better bird but I was hell bent on a Congo. I'm pretty sure I have a Congo gene in me somewhere that makes me prefer that Grey bird with the bright red tail. I've always been drawn to them like nothing else. I would have taken a Timneh too. They're pretty much the same in my book. Either way you go they make great companions if you treat them right. That's the key. No matter how many positive traits a bird may have we can easily screw them up without proper care and attention. You can't leave these birds without socialization constantly. You're basically adding another child to the family.
  18. Another one that can't deal with empty-nest! Join the club, I'm a founder I had a Grey when I was 19 that I lost to a divorce after a few years. I spent the next 20 years wishing I had that Grey back (he/she is in the care of one of my aunt's so I just left it be) or any Grey. Finally when I was about 1.5 years out from my daughter leaving the house I couldn't resist getting a Grey to dote on since my two-legged version was about to walk out and there was no stopping her. I now have a feathered kid that likes to swing and do all the things a kid likes to do
  19. oh, in that case do what we did - remove ceiling fan and install a ceiling light that sits somewhat flush with the ceiling. Our light also has a timer function so that it will come on and go off when programed so we don't have to be home to put birdy's to bed all the time. Birds don't like drafts anyways so the ceiling fan is pretty useless in their room anyway.
  20. I'm assuming you're referring to a fan in the workout room. I would get the carpet blower type fan that directs the air onto you. In our living areas we have converted to the monster slow-moving ceiling fans to avoid any injuries.
  21. For some reason I thought you lived in the middle east. I'm getting my forum members confused! Since you live in TN, you might contact Project Perry and see if they have any advice. They usually take in birds permanently but I don't think yours has reached that point. Your bird just needs someone with some serious CAG know-how and TIME. Also, I wouldn't put the bird out on the deck unsupervised during the day while you're at work. Something will eventually figure out how to prey on him.
  22. Actually, if you're on Facebook, go to Project Perry's page and listen to some of their videos. Your bird is making wild African Grey noises. Perfectly normal for them. I wish you were stateside, I would direct you to them in placing him.
  23. What is it about putting these Greys to bed? My Caique and Jardines go to be willingly. Our Caique actually will ask me in his own little way that he wants to go. However when it comes to putting GreycieMae to bed, it's a battle. It used to be worse. First she'll fly off my shoulder where she's been perched for as many hours as I've been home when it's getting close. Then when I try to go get her, I have to chase her through the living room kitchen. Then when I get her, if she manages to get back on my shoulder she hangs off my back where it's impossible to reach her. I have to use a wall to get her to the point where I can reach her. Then when I'm bending over to put her in after giving her lots of snuggles and kisses, she will try and get inside my shirt. It's cute and all but after three years I started to get irritated with it. She seems to have settled a bit with it in the last few months though. It doesn't take as long as it used to.
  24. I don't think I've ever seen a Grey retrieve like that. He's a real cutie.
  25. OMG....these guys are just too funny. So cute!
