  1. Most of us on the forum of other animals that coexist with our birds. As has already been said, eternal vigilance is the key. Birds are extremely fragile, and it only takes one error to be fatal. I have four cats, and we haven't had any problems. Even after 4 years, I would never leave them together unattended (out together). The only thing that ever scared me was one time when one of the cats decided to jump into Timber's cage (the front door was open) to explore. Fortunately, I was in the room and Timber was out on his boing. I was able to grab Wilson and remove him before Timber got there, but he was moving at top speed to fight the intruder in his private space.
  2. Just a reinforcement, the vinegar/water only for cage cleaning works much better than you would think! I have no real experience with essential oils so don't have anything to add there. I have removed all candles/tarts/etc. from Timber's vicinity. I will admit to still using them on the second floor and in the living room. That said, I live in a large, old house with very good ventilation. I try to follow a better safe than sorry policy also.
  3. I have to admit it is a pretty obnoxious sound. Like everything else, we are starting to get used to it. Timber has decided they are ideal when he hears our feet hit the floor upstairs in the morning. We never get downstairs fast enough for him!
  4. Dee, I am adding a closer pic of assembly. There is a heavy chain up the middle. There are rings (also pretty heavy duty attaching the cups and other toys to the chain. The pink ring and yellow ball at the top are slipped on to the chain through center holes before the ring that holds it to the link was added. It's all heavy and seems really durable. We shall see! I agree, there are many similarities between Timber and Miss Gilbert!
  5. Giannine, I think you are referring to the white bell in the background? That's the biggest, heaviest one he has. The one in the foreground is a bell also. He loves his bells. From what I read here, all greys do. I got those at the bird fair a few years ago. They are heavy, bird-safe, and he can't get to the clapper to chew it loose. As to where to buy the cup set, I would think you could get stainless steel measuring cups about anywhere that sells kitchen supplies. They will say "stainless" on the bottom of the cup.
  6. I sure purchased a hit at this year's bird fair. It is a set of stainless steel measuring cups strung together in toy form. Timber took right to them (very unusual for him) and loves them. I got the stainless steel measuring spoon set last year and he enjoys those so thought I'd step up the game! Boy are they loud... You can see Timber's head in the corner of the picture. When he saw what I was doing (taking the picture) he high-tailed it into the cage. He doesn't like his things "messed" with!

That will make it hard to sleep at night! So excited for you
  8. So sad for you! It is so difficult to watch, even when you know it is "time."

Wow, look how much she's grown!

Wow look at her grow! I can only imagine how excited you are
  11. Loved the photos! Timber also bathes most often in his round water bowl. He isn't quite as successful at getting himself in it, he does front half dips then back half dips. The first time I saw him it looked like he was trying to commit suicide by drowning...
  12. Hello and welcome to you and Oscar! Birdhouse and Neoow have given you excellent advice. Most of us rehomers on the forum have experienced just what you did with the "honeymoon" so you aren't alone! Hang in there, it will just take time (grey time).
  13. That's the way Timber sleeps. Guess it gives their neck a rest! I've found that nothing is really "strange" for greys. They are very individualistic. It's part of their charm.
  14. They are all different. Timber uses every inch of his cage, including the bottom. He also liked to get on the floor. He will take his beloved blue plastic straw under his cage and I here his talons scrabbling around (he's attacking the straw) for many minutes at a time. He always sleeps on his highest perch, but the low ones are used for purposes unknown to me every day. The suggestions for toys are right on. Bells, boings, adding machine tape rolls are favorites here. Timber also loves foraging for thing wrapped in cardboard or paper so you are on the right track there.
  15. Fantastic! It took several weeks for Timber to make the transition from old to new cage, so you have a brave one
  16. Happy belated hatchday to Kane! I've been on vacation and am only catching up on the forum.
  17. Happy Hatchday Gracie! What a lucky girl you are.... but then your dad is lucky too!
  18. You are doing great! I'm a rehomer myself (first AG too). The hardest thing for me was to understand how much TIME it often takes for them to adjust and trust. If you go back to the beginning of many of our stories, our "cuddle birds" didn't happen overnight. Or, in a week, a month, sometimes years. It took 3 months for Timber to step up without a blood-letting. And he wasn't happy about it then. I was frustrated, disheartened and sad. This forum was my salvation because I knew I wasn't alone and Timber was "normal" for a grey. Hang in there!
  19. The bulb you buy will usually give a "replacement" time. I replace mine every 4 months.
  20. LOL to the Tourette's comment! What great progress Gil is making.
  21. Nice haul! Timber always has a roll hanging in his cage.
  22. I was curious, so here goes: Size: A smaller Amazon species, White Fronted Amazons typically reach only about 10 inches in length from the beak to the tip of the tailfeathers. Average Lifespan: 50+ years.
