Yes, of course, what was I thinking
-
I love when they do that I have had terrible problems with Dayo in my computer room so now I have the whole desk (Keyboard and cables) covered with a spread so they are out of sight. But I like some of the ideas here. It's hard to dissuade her with treats though since she really doesn't seam that crazy about anything but pencils and of course I can not give her those.
-
Thanks for this thread - I had no idea tea was a no, no. When I make Earl Grey Miss Dayo loves to steal off with my tea bag to someplace quiet where she can shred it in peace. I will have to start taking the tea bag out and throwing it away.

I see, Well - An Aviary is on my bucket list That sounds like an ideal place for birds to hang out though in the past when I have had her out I definitely got the impression that Miss Dayo is afraid of the great outdoors.
-
How does the Aviary work? They sleep there so you get to observe them going to bed when they want? Or do you take them from the Aviary to their cages? I imagine They probably would go to bed around dusk in the wild which of course varies greatly throughout the year also we have the ability to turn on lights so you have to add light into the equation so a blanket rule like all birds should go to bed at 8:00 might be a little too rigid.
-
Well, I guess everyone has their own way of doing things. Dayo is pretty happy with the way we do things.
-
Well, she has me well trained. You see that cute head bow... she just wants a little head scratch. Anything more and I'd be reprimanded with a nip.

That sounds awesome too - I find Dayo is very flexible. If I get home late from work she puts herself to bed but wakes when I come home and I hear the flapping of wings and a soft landing on my shoulder as she joins me on my way into the kitchen. She never wants to miss out on what's going on in the kitchen

Oh, I got it.. it means there's tags on the post.

An update... Dayo now sleeps on a perch in my room with me. She never screams in the morning anymore. If she wakes up before me she first chases the dog off the bed and then quietly plays with toys until I get up. If I take too long she will walk around on me and find ways to annoy me until I get up. I never lock her in her cage... The door is always open.

What is the little blue tag icon I see on some posts to the lower right next to the a Attachment paper clip icon?

Thank You everyone! grey wings... Congrats on eight years and many more to come. That is wonderful to hear

P.S. Here is an earlier thread I had started on the topic and some input from a few people who have opened their homes and hearts to those in need... http://www.greyforums.net/forums/showthread.php?202219-Why-adopt-a-rescue-rather-buying-from-a-pet-store-or-breeder

Hello Saskia, and welcome to the forum. I also watched Parrot confidential several times and find it so informative and also humbling and at first I did feel deeply ashamed of my decision to keep a parrot as a pet/companion. On the flip side and there has to be one since I am already committed for life to my feathered friend, being aware of the issues and how very special they are goes a long way to making someone a good candidate to help alleviate the huge problem of finding responsible, knowledgeable forever homes for unwanted parrots out there today by adopting a grey who needs a good home. Of course living a natural wild life would be ideal but short of that, there are many souls out there for whom that is not an option and a loving home is not a bad second choice. The show and articles like this one: http://magazine.africageographic.com...hades-of-grey/ prompted me to seriously start researching what I could do to help and members here gave me some good ideas as well. So while we do "own" parrots, we can also love them and care deeply about doing the right thing for them and their kind. I do hope you decide to adopt a parrot in need of a home. Also, consider that they live a long time I've heard all different numbers but can range from 40 - 70 years so adoption allows you to get an age appropriate bird so that your bird does not outlive you and again need to be re-homed when you are gone. All things to consider. So far I have seen no signs that Miss Dayo is unhappy. She plays constantly, eats well and has a personality that I just adore. Of course I do live in a big bird cage, meaning she has lots of places to hang out and puzzle toys / foraging toys to keep her mind occupied and of course she is fully flighted (No wing clipping). When I go out I leave the TV on for her and I make sure to spend quality interactive time with her in the morning and in the evening. I do go out to work and school so she is at home without me for hours at a time during the day but the TV and the company of the dog and the cat seams to be doing the trick. I am glad you are here discussing this. -Best, Mary & Dayo

From what I've read here some greys love to travel in a car. I would just keep temperature in mind that If you are traveling the truck can never get too cold for your grey.... I'm not sure what that exact temp. limit is but I'm sure someone here can chime in.

What a sweet, sweet face he has.

Hi SterlingSL - Thanks! Your Gracie Videos inspired me to try to get Ms. Dayo more used to my hands - If I did what you do with Gracie while she's playing I'd loose a finger.... But I just might need to be braver and trust that she doesn't want to hurt me - I started saying to her "It doesn't have to get like that" after watching your video and she responds by loosening up and looking at me like "what?"! I also started playing with a small ball with her (Like you guys did on top of the refrigerator) and she does love that. She also screams and flies away if I bounce the ball higher than her... much the same reaction as if she's seen a bug which I thought she learned from me but I guess they all do it . I got that PVC Foraging Toy here : http://nalanitoys.com/Puzzlebirdtoys.htm it's pretty cool. You unscrew the bottom and fill with whatever and she seams to love it.

This is a very informative article on African Greys and how buying from breeders & pet stores feeds the butterfly effect on illegal trafficking of wild caught African Greys. There are so many unwanted Parrots that rescue facilities are turning them away. If you are thinking about buying a parrot and know what is involved to care for them please read this article and adopt a rescue... http://magazine.africageographic.com/weekly/issue-5/shades-of-grey/

Well that sounds adorable. I'm afraid we're not so civilized here.

Ha Talon, Love the update

Hmm - When I first got Miss Dayo she was clipped and I took her outside and she did indeed hate it as well. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to build her and outdoor aviary thinking maybe it's just too much to take in all at once and once she gets used to it she'll love it. I hope so anyway because that would be a lot of work if she didn't like it. Also then I would worry about using screen since she has chewed bird sized holes in my kitchen door screen which I now have covered with silver tape... very attractive.

Aww - I wish Dayo would do that without trying to pick the keys off of the keyboard!
