im asking this because last weekend i was at petsmart getting animal food and a guy came in with a scarlet Macaw. no tether or leash he just walked in with the bird on his shoulder and when he got a cart he put it on the cart handle and went about his business. I should have talked to the guy but my time was short and i had other places to go and do. I have always wondered what kind of training it takes to get a bird to be so docile. I and im sure most members of this forum could never take their bird out like that. I know for my CAG it does not take much to spook her. So to have a bird that one can just take out with no fear of it flying away is it a factor of many things like temperament, training and clipping the wings?

My 39 year old rehomed Zon was a mofo when it came to hands. I still have scars from when he bit me. the method i used to get him in his cage was to dangle a towel in front of him, he would grab it with his beak and then his feet. then I could safely tote him to his cage and put him back in. might be something to try.

$2,000 bucks? umm yea not in my budget. if it was sold in bottles i would buy it. but i can not justify 2 g's for a water machine.

I feed Luna (my gray) and Merlin (my Senegal) scrambled eggs on Sunday mornings. you should see them when i put it in their cage its like crack to them. i put nothing in the eggs before or after cooking. I spray the skillet with Pam and pour the egg in and cook until done then transfer the eggs to a bowl that i then put in the freezer to cool down before I give them to the birds.

Barbara Heidenreich - Good Advice to Control Biting
carlsjr replied to chezron's topic in The GREY Lounge
yes body language is key. for Luna i have a couple of key behaviors that tell me that she will bite me if i mess with her. 1. if she is in her mid afternoon aggressive let the energy out phase by hanging upside down and biting the bell or if she is just excited and i put my hand in and if she raises up like a cobra and lets out a loud click. im going to get bite, not hard but firm. On the other hand like right now she is is sitting on top of my monitor as i type this all puffed out and looking like a baby penguin. i can reach up with 100% certainty that i will not get bit and she will welcome the scratched by putting her beak in to my palm or she will turn her head like she is sleeping so i rub her neck. then she will show her pleaseure and gently beak my finger from the hand down to the finger nail. and she LICKS my finger while doing it. then go back to being a puffed up penguin and start beak grinding. Birds so weird but a absolute blast to have. lol -
i have read that peanuts in the shell are dangerous. there was member on here who lost his gray due to unshelled peanuts. http://www.thebirdwhisperer.org/TheSilentParrotKiller.pdf if you give your bird peanuts, so what dave said and get human grade. do not use peanuts found in birdseed. http://www.parrotparrot.com/articles/parrotdiet/aspergillus-are-peanuts-safe-for-parrots/

Please sign this petition to stop the sale of dead parrots on EBAY>
carlsjr replied to auntphibian's topic in The GREY Lounge
I see no problem with selling dead animals to vet schools as teaching tools for our future veterinarians, even taxidermy has his uses. outrage not found, Did not sign. -
lol, maybe someday i will. you live in brighton UK and i live in Brighton CO USA. small world.

it doesnt matter to him he just enjoys any time spent with him.

he stays in the car i dont take him inside any public buildings, when we go to the post office to check mail i put him on the steering wheel while i run in. my town is a small farming community, my windows are tinted really dark and i lock my car. I never have him and my Congo out at the same time. I dont want to take the chance of little merlin getting hurt by my congo. He is bonded to my wife, he will allow me to take him out of his cage and he will ride on my shoulder. but he will not let me touch him or hold him. he is 25 and has never ever flown.

im on the fence on this but i am leaning towards the rescue group favor. it is their animal and have every right to ensure the animal goes to a good home and is safe. They can put any verbiage they want in the contract, if you the new "owner" done like it then you are free to go someplace else.
-
i seriously thought about adopting a parrot from the Gabriel foundation, but after reading their contract and looking over their questionnaire i walked away. https://thegabrielfoundation.org/files/confidential-adoption-app-small.pdf i understand why they do this screening process but it felt really intrusive and not for me.

umm i disagree. if somebody buys/adopts a parrot and SIGNS a legal contract to keep the birds wings clipped then they should honor that contract or don't buy/adopt the bird. The "business" has every right to sue you for Breech of Contract if you do not comply with the purchase agreement. having the bird fly for the court has no bearing at all on the contract other than proving you did not honor your part of the agreement. if you the buyer did not agree with the purchase terms then don't buy, nobody twisted your arm to sigh the contract.
