We had our baby sent to us from Georgia. From when he was dropped off til when we were able to pick him up, it took about 4 hours. There were not many breeders in our area either. I would say if this is your first bird, buying a baby is best. Like the others said, adopted birds have baggage, either good or bad, and it can be difficult for first-time bird owners to deal with the baggage. We have adopted birds in the past, and it's hard to get the bird to trust you after it's been abused, or neglected. HOWEVER, when you find the perfect bird for you, (and trust me, you'll know) you may be surprised with the outcome A friend of mine went to a rescue looking to adopt a young Grey, and ended up falling head over heels for a 21 year old Rose Breasted Cockatoo

I've been giving Sully steamed (I know... raw is better, but it's not happening!) a mix of veggies every evening at dinner (just depending on what we have with dinner). I've been trying to get him to eat carrots FOREVER.... FOREVER! I've even mushed them up and spread it on a corn on the cob...nope! HE FINALLY ate one this afternoon-- and didn't throw it!! Then he proceeded to eat EVERY ONE in his bowl!!!! I know it's just one food... and he eats all other veggies, but this became personal. LOL! What food does your grey refuse to eat??

Very True, MarcusCAG! I almost fell over laughing. He keeps me on my toes!

Hi Barbara So sorry to hear about your loss, and I'm glad you got a few answers (as confusing as they may be). I wonder if it's possible to test a bird that is still alive for the virus? It may make you feel better to have your other two tested (just in case) if it is possible to do the testing. I know with many tests on birds though, it's impossible to test for diseases in live birds Hope you heal soon from your loss, and can move forward with your flock It's amazing how fragile their systems are. Good luck to you and your new baby too!

LOL He's not hurtin for toys! haha, I always feel kinda guilty whenever I bring in these huge boxes of toys, and I walk RIGHT PAST his cage... so he gets one... or ten.

Stainless Steel is the way to go! And be careful of those cooking utensils! They are often coated with teflon, and if you accidently leave one in a pan while you're cooking, it may have the same effect We had all teflon, and when we got Sully we started using Stainless steel and glass, and just replaced a pan at a time. It can be expensive, but teflon really is harmful to people too, so I'm glad we did it Plus, Stainless steel cooks evenly

I'm writing an article on bird ownership, and I wanted to include a "Most Important Things You didn't know you needed to Know" about owning large parrots. Most people know the basic stuff... but I've learned so much being on the forum, I wanted to see what information or things y'all learned that you never even thought about before coming to the forum? Ya know, kinda things you only know because it happened to someone else. Any ideas what to include? I would love to include these things in my article

Sully and I were sitting here this evening, me on the computer and he on the bottom perch of his T-stand. As I was reading all the new posts on the forum, things suddenly got quiet... you know what that means.. I started searching for him. I had shut all the bedroom doors, Bird toy room door (where I keep a bird free environment for JBS Bird Toys) and bathroom doors, and knew he must be somewhere in the living room. So, I stood still for a minute, listening, and I said, "Sully, Where'd you go!?" and I hear knocking. Sully was sitting at the bottom of the bird toy room door down the hall, banging his beak on the door! I walked into the hall, put my hand down and he stepped up, and he yelled "TOYS!" LOL! Funny guy. He knows all the good stuff is in that room, I guess because that's where I take all my boxes when they come in and I tell him there are toys in there... Smarty pants

Welcome Love the names of your fids!! Bet your house is just like all of ours- never quiet! Can't wait to hear more about your birds.. and you! -
Sullys water is changed in the morning and evening, but keeps it pretty clean during the day... Plus, he has a water bottle that he's been using more and more (finally!)

It doesn't interfer with my routine... so it doesn't do any harm. Plus, I don't cater to it... I'm a creature of habit and am usually headed off to bed about that time... We both enjoy it, and it's been a great bonding experience for the two of us. He knows when it is bed time, and I think it has given him some stability during hectic times. As far as the water, His water is pretty dirty after being in there all day, and he enjoys turning the light off in the bathroom after it's filled up I don't see there being anything wrong with it- and I rule the roost as well, and all my fids know it, but I think it's fun and helps bonding to have SOMETHING I do with him every night... Many bird owners are on more of a routine than they realize. (Feeding the birds at the same time every day, or letting them out of their cage at a certain time in the morning or evening.) Ours just happens to be at night The rest of the day is kind of a free-for-all... whatever happens!

Hey everyone I'm interested to know what everyone's night time routine is? I've noticed that if we don't keep Sully on a STRICT (I'll explain) routine at night time, He gets NASTY! Screams, bangs his beak along his cage, etc. Just wondering if anyone else is like this and what kind of routine (that to anyone other than a Grey owner would seem silly) you have? Sully has to be covere at about 10 after 10. Any later than that, and ooooh boy. He gets picked up off his door, and I take him into the bathroom with me to get him some fresh water. He boop boops to himself in the mirror, and gets to turn off the light switch. We go back to his cage and I give him kisses, and he makes the noise back, and he goes onto his boing... NOT HIS PERCH- HIS BOING! lol. Then, he gets his peanut, I put his fresh water in his cage, and he brings his peanut over to dip it into the water (I guess to soften it?) I cover him, tell him night night, and off to bed! Morning time routine doesn't seem to matter nearly as much. He doesn't care if he's uncovered at 5 am or 8, just as long as it's quiet. Gotta love 'em!

Thanks to you both Sully has never bitten like that... little nips here and there or biting a little too hard while playing rough is one thing... I just hope things will calm down around here and he begins to adjust. He seems fine, until it's time for his cage. Perhaps getting back on track with his routine will help. He's been getting covered at around 11:30p, instead of his usual 10:00p, and other small things are off, so maybe he's just freaked out. Hopefully!

Got the code working again... sigh, technology...

I think we've hit the 'terrible two's' stage a bit early... I got my first REAL Grey bite two days ago... right on my cheek. Sully had been super aggitated (we think it's because he hasn't been getting his normal amount of attention because of the move a couple weeks ago)... and I was putting him back in his cage for the night. It's our usual routine... night night kisses, a peanut, and he goes quietly into his cage, gets covered, and then we say 'lights out!'... Well... We got through the kisses and the peanut. As I was putting him in his cage, he decided... NOPE! So he clenched onto my bracelet, which is normal... but he flapped his wings as hard as he could- and BOOM up on my shoulder! (Some of you may remember, Sully's wings had been clipped very short, and I was concerned he wouldn't have the strength to ever fly- WRONG!) He got two new flight feathers over the past week... and learned what they were for! LOL Anyway-- I was so happy that he had flown up there, that I went "yaaaaay!" but quickly attempted to get him off my shoulder without him snatching one of my earrings... without warning (that I could see, lol) I got a bite, right on the side of my face. Now, I have freckles... and a particularly dark one right about where he bit, so I don't know... but it HURT! Now the question is... what do I do? I got him down and put him on his cage, told him "No biting", and walked away... I don't want to put him IN his cage as punishment, because I want his cage to be a happy place... but he needs to know that 1: He's not a shoulder bird... and 2: It's not okay to bite (not saying he won't do it, but I atleast want him to know I don't like it.) Any suggestions? Sorry for the long post.. I tend to do that

Yep. The whole Crab claw. Chesapeake Bay Crabs! I have to crack it up for him, but I have seen Macaws crack right through
-
LOL @ Judy- I think you would be his new best friend
-
HAHA! Sully is the same way. He talks up a storm when we're not in the room, or if he's so busy playing or eating he doesn't notice us... Quite frustrating! lol
-
Well, all those fears about Sully being freaked out or nervous during our move were for nothing! Sully did extremely well. He LOVED the car ride to our new place, and really seems to enjoy his new surroundings (including his new window) and the clip clap of his feet on the hardwood floor! I love the new hardwood floor too, seeing how I can keep his cage area clean much easier! LOL.. The only thing he seems to be different about is his toys. He seems to have NO interest in them whatsoever... however he could be bored with them and just need a switcharoo! Today, he had one of his new favorite treats, a crab claw. He picked that thing CLEAN! What a well-adjusted bird :) Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm sure having his cage here already set up really helped
-
I can NEVER get sully that wet!! That's a grey that loves water, Good for you!! We bathe Sully about once every two or three days... Unless he's just not having it, then we set a casserole dish with water in it at the bottom of his cage, and he bathes within a few minutes
