RabbitAir Air Purifier is Here and Awesome!!
Elvenking replied to lovethatgrey's topic in Health Room
Yes..I got mine two days ago...loving it. Love the remote..and turbo mode is still super quiet. Love the air sensors too. For a uint that moves 600 sq ft twice an hour...you cant go wrong. -
My Green Cheek says his name, Pedro, he does kisses, burps, and coughs too. LOL. And I often catch him speaking some demon language that I can't make out...but I swear he is talking.

Issac hates large things moving past his cage. It freaks him out every time. Try to have them in another room if you have large furniture or other items moving around. All I know is it really scares Issac and I don't do it any more.

Now those are encouraging words to let you know that...it really is never too late. Thanks.

Too bad she couldn't the the playful video of Cocoa on her back.

That bird has an immense amount of trust. Wonderful job!
-
Yeah..pretty much if you don't mind the noise...you can handle a Conure. That is the only issue I have ever had or heard about regarding them. They are cool little guys.
-
I see the little baby pictures and I feel like one of those mothers who dodes over a new human baby. LOL...too cute.

I love stories like this. Thanks for saving those birds.

Yeah....I know it will take time to acclimate him to the travel cage, it's just a question of whether that will happen in time for the move or not. Long term, yes, he will eventually not see it as a big invader of our space and hopefully enjoy it.

Aoodi looks wonderful and healthy. Congratulations on a beautiful bird!

Thank you all for the words of encouragement. He totally hates the travel cage and won't even get too close to it for the moment. I got him a little closer last night but he flys away like its gonna kill him when he gets too close. When he flew away from home a few weeks back, I was able to easily cart him home in a box with holes in the side. My move is only 2 miles away...so if worse comes to worse...I could take that route. I have left the cage in sight in hopes that he will grow less and less wary of it. We will see what happens by Saturday. Crossing fingers. I will put some toys in it too to make it more inviting tonight. I will let ya know how that goes.

Whatever you do, do not yell at the bird or you will reinforce the behavior. I know you didn't mention that this is happening, but it is the natural reaction and it will only dig a deeper hole. So firstly, make sure that there is no 'punishment' that is associated with this behavior or it will go on. That said, and as others have mentioned, staying calm and for the most part ignoring the behavior will have the greatest effect. They will move on to other noises to get your attention. Let the soft cute ones turn your head and give them attention. And do nothing to the unwanted ones. It can take a little time, but be sure...they will move on to other noises that grab your attention.

I will have something familiar everywhere I take him while I move. Treats and such as well. And if he looks scared, I won't leave his side until he is okay. I think if I can acclimate him to the travel cage this week, then the move will go fine. I am leaving the cage in his view all the time, touching it and telling him that it is good. Trying to get him to come play by it. Then I am going to do a trial run with the cage on Wednesday. I will let you know how that one goes. Crossing fingers. The move itself isn't too big of a job. The number of things I have has drastically dropped since I have moved like 4 times in the last two years. This place should settle me down for a while though.

So, I am going to be moving to a new apartment on the 27th and 28th. I have bought a travel cage and I am leaving it out so that Issac can get used to the idea of his presence. Around tuesday I want to see if he will at least stand on the cage so that on Wednesday, I can try to get him in it. Of course I will put familiar things inside for him to see as well as food and such to make it look as inviting as possible. Hopefully this all goes well. What I am wondering is if there is any particular course of action I should take stepwise to make the transition as smooth as possible. My plan is to have him out of the rooms where the big heavy moving is going on so he doesn't get scared. They don't seem to like it when large objects are getting moved. So I will roll the cage into my bedroom while I move stuff from the main room into the moving truck. Then it is going to be time for the cage move. I guess I will free him up to fly around my bedroom and have as many familiar things in there as possible to minimize any fear. Move the cage to the truck. Now will come the time to take my lil guy over to the new place. I surely hope he won;t be trying to flutter about the cage when he is being transported. Once there, I will move him into a room where all the moving activity will not be currently taking place so as to not scare him. Of course constantly checking up on him to make sure he is okay. At this point...I will let him fly around the room I will keep him in while we move and I set up his cage again. Once all the heavy stuff is in. I will return him to his cage. Looking for any additional ideas so that my baby is not too scared of the change. His new home is going to have more space, but I don;t think that is going to be what is on his mind. I sure hope it all goes okay. If you have had to move with your bird, how did you make the transfer smooth?

Your reply is related enough. Guests know, but none will have the pure paranoia that I have over that matter. So I am always on duty when he is out. There may come som situations where I just don't want to chance it and put him in his cage. Likely situations where there may be more people over than I trust to keep a sae environment.

Issacs most vocal moments are on the back left corner of my couch...and the shower curtain rod in the morning. I love it when he gets going. Sometimes he will hold his head high in the air and appear to be trying to get a word out, "Roolloloolooowwww". Then I will say, "Hellooooooo". Keep working with him and such. And like you say too, when I walk out of the room and he is enjoying sitting on his atom, he will get going and I will just sit in the other room and listen while he practices. He is such a wonderful little thing.

BTW....if you wanted to try this and you have a microphone for your computer...you can use this free application to capture what your baby says during the day without all the time in between. It is a sound activated recorder that only records when noise is being made above a set threshold. http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=3985

It is amazing you know? Thank you for sharing that.

I have one Green Cheek Conure and he can be nippy at times. He mainly likes me and a few other select people who aren't nervous around birds. If you are nervous, he picks it up right away and uses it to his advantage...nipping. That said, my green cheek, Pedro, keeps to himself and likes to stay on his cage. Mostly happy just with some toys and his space. He likes to sit on my shoulder and is perfectly fine there. But all these things are just his personality. As a species, I would say that they can make some noises that are pretty annoying for sure. Easily beats my Grey in that department. Screeching...that is the best word for it. It happens on occasion. But if yer a bird person that shouldn't bother you to the point of thinking owning one is a mistake. He was my only little buddy before I brought Issac home. He learned how to say his name which was cute. He copies some of the noises around the house too. Very cool bird. On a difficulty scale of one to ten, I put them at about a 3 or 4......and a Grey at about 8 or 9. The Conures just aren't as demanding. But that is just my experience with one single Green Cheek. He was clipped young, but I let his feathers grow out so he could fly. However, he doesn't like to much and only flies when spooked. There are my two cents.

After asking around, that seems to be the best advice Dave. Thanks again for the concise summation of the topic.
