  1. ... when you haven't slept past sunrise in... years?
  2. We JUST replaced the floor in the great room and have decided to replace the carpet in the bedroom with laminate lol!
  3. He's gorgeous! You've done well. Don't let other people tell you what you can/can't do. It's obvious that you love your little one and have taken steps to be great parront. On behalf of my neglected (if you ask them) fids, we send much love your way! Great work.
  4. Yup. We live in hawk/falcon country. They circle our lot in 2's or 3's daily. Throw in a bald eagle for variety. For this reason, we are VERY careful with taking our fids out (in cages, 0.5 inch bars).
  5. ...You play WoW, you take the griffon flight and want to give him scritches and treat when you land.
  6. I'm sure the terrible 2's will remedy all this "touchy-feely" stuff lol. I'm looking at the calendar and planning my schedule around spending as much time as I possibly can with Willow and Leo over the next 8 months.
  7. I've read anecdotal accounts of hawks that will actually fly down and go for a harnessed bird on someone's arm, as well as attacking through screened windows and outdoor cages. Hungry hawks, it appears, are desperate enough to try anything.
  8. Thanks, dan, I know I'm probably being over paranoid. It's almost like winning the lottery and wondering what just happened and why did it happen to me? lol
  9. Jayd, it's all good. All we all want here, I think, is the best for our fids. Sometimes some of us take things personally when we shouldn't. It happens, we're human Our strength lies in how we deal with conflict, not in how we deal with the lack thereof.
  10. Over the last week, he's taken to sleeping during the day with his beak tucked under his wing. While I know this is normal sleeping behavior, he's never done it before during sun-up hours. He's also become more affectionate over the last couple weeks (and he was pretty darned affectionate to begin with). As some background: - He's 14 months old - When he left the pet store he was still on their syringe-feeding program and we finished weaning him. - He's very affectionate, relaxed and low stress. Probably the most laid-back bird in our flock - He only does this when he's around me (sleeps on my computer monitor while I work, on his playtop) - He's been REALLY snuggly the last week. Welcomes scritches by the ton, but doesn't really go out of his way to get them, aside from landing on my shoulder every day at 4 PM like clockwork... lol So my question is: Is he just settling in to being totally comfortable around me? Because part of me wants to treat any change in behavior as: PANIC! Sure, he's more snuggly (and he just, as I typed that, flew to my shoulder for scritches), but is that always good?
  11. That first picture is ADORABLE!
  12. In the interest of just being nice and everyone getting along, I think Jayd needs a hug.
  13. You mean "we're" even? /run for cover I'm willfully ignoring your sarcasm.
  14. Our last mash batch was magic. The batch before that I was wondering what the problem was, since most of the fids just nibbled at it but wouldn't eat it consistently. This latest batch has me adding to their wet bowls at lest once a day after the morning meal. Trouble is: I didn't write down exactly what we did! Being cooks, we started with the standard list of ingredients but ended up adding this or that here and there and I have NO idea what we did! lol Ah well.
  15. Where we're at the hawks (red tail, mainly), falcons and eagles hunt at all hours. They hunt prarie dogs, snakes, bunnies, mice, and smaller birds, all of which have different hours of activity. The owls only hunt (mice) at night.
  16. I'm sure there's an english major reading that and twitching lol
  17. Oh, absolutely! Our entire flock knows when we're in the kitchen and insist on participating. I literally can't get a glass of water from the fridge without Maddox and Willow flying to my shoulder like... "whatcha got there? Can I have some?"
  18. I'm still laughing. These fids are all part Ninja, if you ask me.
  19. The Under Armour logo on the backs of the necks of my shirts is apparently a crosshairs for parrots lol.
  20. Unworthly = typo. If you're not sure what that means, then please explain to me what "publically" means and we'll be even. Just sayin' and Dave, I owe an apology as it was danmcq who made this statement in another thread: So my deepest apologies and I'll try and commit fewer typos, if you will
  21. Tonight we made crab cakes and salmon steaks with veggies. Our Ninja Green Cheek, Rusty, determined that he was the sole proprietor and manager of my veggies and bellied up to my plate and helped himself. What could I do? I moved the meaty stuff over to the other side of the plate and ate my dinner while he chewed on my asparagus and muttered, "pickles!" at me. It is what it is.
  22. poop is a funny thing You really need to be cognizant of what your fid is eating/drinking. At times ours will just download full water and I panic but then remember we gave them some apple juice with breakfast! Just remember that what you see going in you should see going out (having the knowledge of avain poop as a foundation, of course). Call me crazy, but I've caught more than one download in my hand just for the purpose of inspecting it lol. Hands wash easier than carpets, too
  23. Jan, We're in a similar situation with our Willow. She's not a plucker. When we purchased her last April, she was 8 weeks old and the morons at the pet store had clipped four flights on her left wing. Yes. Just one wing. Over the next 8 months, she managed to chew all her tail feathers off. Over the last 4 months, she's had a long, tough molt. She's regrown her tail feathers but those 4 freaking flights just refuse to molt out. I'm half tempted to take her to the vet and have them pulled. She's semi-flighted, like your fid, but can't get any lift and has had a few run-ins with the walls/furniture. We don't want to clip her because she's always had at least some flight ability, but at the same time we worry for her safety. Our approach is to keep her as occupied and happy as possible. She's a grumpy bear because of the molting (looked like a cotton ball for about a month), but we just give her attention and really monitor her preening to make sure she doesn't get too aggressive. It's time consuming and takes a lot of patience, but we're hoping it pays off. So far so good. She now has a full tail coming in and has molted off most of her back/chest so we're crossing our fingers. Our other grey has exactly NONE of those problems and looks like feathered perfection. go figure.
  24. We have a ton of raptors out here. Hawks, Eagles, Owls. I've heard anecdotal accounts of hawks attacking domestic birds through window screens as well as outside while harnessed. We're VERY careful here and only take our fids out when it's totally clear above.
