1. From observation the females are often a paler color than the males, but only the birds really know. I have friends who's birds DNA test results were male, the bird laid an egg three years later. It still has a male name. No method is perfect but DNA is your best shot unless your bird produces an egg.
2. Just act like all is normal, talk about where he is and his new digs. Make certain he feels safe and welcome then just allow him time to settle in. Greet him when you pass by his cage and stop to give him a small treat once in a while or a head scrich if he offer his head. You will do just fine and so should he. Looking forward to the updates as he progresses in his comfort at your home.
3. My foster Grey does that in her cage often, more upside down than right side up.
4. From 2007 and a closed thread, are you trying to tel lus something? lol
5. I love her broge, she has such a way with words.

7. Funny how they select their special spot, she can keep a good eye on you there and watch out for predators too. Your funny little look out girl.
8. Peyperj he will have to shed those trimmed feathers before he can grow new ones. When his body is ready to molt those feathers then you will see the new ones emerging. The only way to speed up that process is to have them removed witch is painful and can break a wing so I do NOT recommend it. Perhaps you can pad some areas where he hangs out to soften his landings until nature replaces those flight feathers.
9. I think she is rewarding your good behavior, they know how to train a human. (little grey aliens)
10. LOL got to have a sense of humor with those tips. I hate when any animal is injured or killed but these horses are born to run. They are going to run all out weather on a track or in a pasture they love and live to run. They are magnificent to watch and so beautiful in action it does make an accident of any kind that much harder to watch/accept when you see them flying over those jumps and running with their hearts. The great ones seem to appreciate a victory as well as their humans.
11. Excellent Dave you really covered the variables so beautifully. Much better safe than sorry.

Good work! Karma to you for the research.
13. Big wing hugs from here, proud of you girl and I know that Ha;) rvey helps you with the humor!
14. Just keep in mind that birds can be fickle and change affections and favorites in a sudden moment so always keep on eye in their body language for safety's sake. We had two Greys together in a large outdoor cage at the sanctuary with plenty of food, lots of toys and branches they got along well and seemed quite happy. After three years with no signs of trouble the male was injured with bite marks around his beak and he lost the first joint of one toe as well. Safety first.
15. Appreciate your sharing your judgment error that takes courage and it may save some one else from making the same mistake. Also our mouths carry bacteria that can make our birds quite sick so I would suggest that if you feel the need to kiss your Grey (or other Parrot) you do so upon the top of the head instead. A safer approach for both bird and human.
16. Will try that at home I love watching their reactions to new things in their environments.

Tapioca is made from the Cassava root there are several types of Cassava some of which contain toxins which are removed during the processing into Tapioca I do not know why there would be an issue feeding a little Tapioca to Parrots. If some one has that information I would be interested in reading further. I have fed it in very small amounts but only when it was soaked in real fruit juice or a safe herbal tea. Avoiding the sugar and dairy us people usually use.

Post edited by: Greywings, at: 2010/04/08 15:30
18. Read the label on your aloe vera does it contain anything besides the aloe vera juice? You might try to find some George's aloe Vera Juice it is very pure and may not cause any reactions at all, it looks like water. That question can only be answered by time passing although your Vet may have some insight based on history treating the same issues. Some birds seem to come out of it with full feathers and some will always pluck. I have seen both results and it may be influenced by how long this has been an active behavior if it has become entrenched into his mind. The ability to regrow them is dependent on the health of his feather follicles, if they are able to still produce and have not shut down production due to damage. i think that your guy has a chance to look pretty normal if all goes as planned, I hope so for your peace of mind.
19. You have to appreciate that they do feel stuffed after eating. You are right this is a dangerous thread. lol
