That sounds like so much fun for you and your birds. Not a normal grey indeed. Bah, I don't believe it. This event sounds well organized and it would be a sight to see. I am glad you got to experience it with Kea and Rangi.
-
Robin, that is an awesome place to play. It sure looks like it will distract them with swinging and playing with all the trinkets you provided. I want to come to your house to play.
-
Paco is the same age as Kopi and I find that he chooses judiciously when he will speak. He is also very chatty early in the morning and late in the evening with long silent periods in between. I have also noticed when I am busy or when I am out of the house for a few hours, he is less likely to talk that evening. When your schedule lets up and you spend more time with him, he will pick right up where he left off.

This little guy is very shy. He likes being in his cage and if he is out playing, he will scuttle right back in when he is approached. He has been letting me reach in and offers his bowed head for a scratch when I ask him. I see improvement every day as he gets more curious and his personality is just ever so sweet. I put a bucket of foot toys in and he didn't go near it for a few days but yesterday he discovered them and has been very busy. This morning I was watching him and enjoying his play time when he looked out and very clearly in a sweet little voice asked "What are you doing?" I ask him that a lot. It is hard to stay back and wait for him, but it is working.

With David's camera and Kopi's cooperation, I got a couple of pictures.

He is just adorable. We got our first bird, a poicephalus -red bellied, Java the same way three years ago. She endeared herself to my husband while I waited in the car. My girls came to get me and begged me to come see. She was begging him for head scratches and attention and I gave in. I had no idea how this tiny little creature would capture my heart. Pepper will get a look at all the good food you offer him and will gain weight in no time. Java weighs 132 grams, so he won't take long at all to catch up. Congratulations on your baby, he will make you laugh openly and often.

I am so excited for you and for Hawkins. You are getting your own little bundle of joy to treasure forever and ever. It is time, its your turn, its real and you deserve this.

Kopi is camera shy at the moment. I keep taking pictures that are blurry, but it could be that the adjustment Juno made on my lens is the problem. I will see if my husband's camera does any better. I get so excited when Kopi comes out of his cage, I forget all about taking photos. I did discover a key to his heart and trust in the past couple of days... pine nuts. He comes right out for a little tidbit. And... I have been more careful with the palm oil, mixing it into his beans so he doesn't annoint himself again. What a mess!

Warrior princess Alfie fears nothing not even a fearsome red kite! Take that on your beak.. there is more where that came from. LOL. I can't wait for Kopi to get comfortable and brave.
-
Hahahaha, I made an atom too, but never thought to use it as a bubble to protect lunch. Good one Lyn. Nothing will make Alfie want to get on that atom more than trying to get to you. You are a genius! I love it.

When this was first posted, I was just starting a weight loss program and it has motivated me to lose 6 pounds so, it has had a good impact. I will keep coming back to see it if my willpower is flagging.

The audacity of someone deciding our birds are the most unattractive. I was expecting an April Fools declaration at the end of this one. Sooooo... when you have a scintillating, fascinating, spectacular personality and an intelligent captivating mind... you don't need fancy feathers to draw in a crowd. That is my grey theory and I'm sticking to it. Pretty wears thin with time and our greys are timeless. LOL. I love my Kopi and think he is the most beautiful boy although.. I have seen him using palm oil as a cosmetic. He must have read that article.

Ha ha, good one Jill. It looks like she is saying "If I can't have these, nobody else is getting them either." I need to station her in front of my refrigerator for my inspiration to walk away slowly. LOL

I think it might be likely your mom is turning into a parrot person now that she sees how much pure joy Isaac has brought to your life.

Whiskey is a happy little fellow and he sure knows he is delightful to you as well. I love all the little sounds he can make.

Losing Sparky left a void in your life, I am sorry for your loss. It does help to talk about it and all he meant to you. Glad to see you coming in to the forum and sharing your time with us. All your little grey udates will bring bright moments as your sadness eases with time.

Small problems with Yoshi... need advice

Your post helped me because Kopi will fling himself off his stand if he gets spooked and he can get about six feet away with the conservative wing clip, but it scares me a lot. Something that I had forgotten about was the thick foam interlocking squares I have from Sears that are for concrete floors. I am going to try making a landing strip for Kopi so he doesn't have such an impact on the hardwood floors, yet it will be easy to clean. They aren't terribly expensive. I was wondering if she started the clamoring after you were gone for a short while for training and she is looking for reassurance that you are near. Hopefully it is a phase. You are handling it well by talking gently and quietly to her and trying your best to ignore the loud outbursts. -
That picture of his close-up is mesmerizing, he is looking good. I am so glad he is enjoying a tuna sandwich again, it was his favorite to steal away from your lunch. Your commitment to helping Spock is inspiring. I wouldn't have had the heart to try again and to take Kopi with his challenges if it weren't for watching others like you taking one day at a time and just enjoying what we have while we have it. Spock is always in my heart and thoughts and I hope he continues to put this behind him and it remains a mystery and distant memory.

The funny thing is, I know I am an animal lover, I know how much I love the intelligence and personality of these birds but every day I still wake up and think I must have dreamed it was really so wonderful. And every day is a new thrill of realizing it is better than I could have imagined. My friends and family think they get it, but I have surely turned the grey bend.
-
Lyn, I was wondering the same thing when I saw the palm oil smeared all over Kopi and wondered to myself how I was going to clean him when he took his first bath. If they can really read minds... there is no hope of keeping Kopi the little gentleman Ann worked so hard to train. My kids say to keep him out of the car with me never mind inside my head. I do believe it anything is possible and say.. oh dear.

It is such a tough situation but it sounds like Kate is caring and calm and has turned things around for this bird. I am so happy to know he is going to be with someone committed to bringing him to good health and giving him a happy life. Bless his heart... and Kate's too.

It does take my breath away to see his personality unfold. He is every bit as amazing as I imagined a grey to be from all the reading I have done on this forum about all of your experiences. He seems good natured but is past the point of being a baby so some days he agrees to let me pick him up and some days he scuttles into his cage when he sees me coming. He jumps to the floor and then comes to find me for a lift back into his cage with a little wave of his foot and a hoarse "want up". The time he let me give him scratches was just for that night. It is going to take some time for him to feel safe enough to take over the house. Every day is something new and always a good laugh. I just feel lucky to have him in my life.

Happy Bird Day to Precious. Is she willing to reveal how many she has celebrated, or maybe she is too much of a lady. And lovely to see Spock making his googly eyes at her, ya little rascal.

What a morning. I put the palm oil in the refrigerator after noticing the label recommended it. Usually, I chop it into the warm beans, but left a chunk to see if he would eat it like Harvey. But no, he let it get softened and then adorned his head. Just as I was wondering if I should clean him, he got into his water dish and bathed himself. I took the opportunity while he was having a good time and misted him and put in a bigger bowl of water. He is soaked through and made such a ruckus he has the dogs hiding in their crate for an hour or more. He cleaned himself and then some. He has been screeching and making chimpanzee and pterodactyl screeches. He is delighted with scaring the dogs and is sweetly calling them, no doubt to drench them again.
-
Aww, it is sweet that he learned your name. He is beautiful and loves you.
