HI and welcome! I think you did the right thing joining this forum. I think you should read this book if you havent already: "For the Love of Greys, By Bobbi Brinker It has SO much info regarding these birds, from general care, to diet and recipes, to emotional needs, How to choose a breeder, when your baby grey comes home....etc. I loved the book and think anyone who has, or is thinking of having a grey should buy it and read it. I refer to mine all the time.

IT'S NATURAL TO BE DEFENSIVE. I am the same way when people tell me that females cant/dont talk as well as males. But I had some comments back from the good people on this forum who also own females.

Greys pluck feathers for a variety of reasons. Sometimes boredom or not enough human interaction causes an African Grey to pull out its feathers. I have also seen birds that pluck because they get too much attention -- with the owner running over every time the Grey pulls out a feather. Others pluck because of dietary imbalances, or environmental problems, such as people smoking or the air too dry. Greys should have regular baths and exposure to some kind of moist air on a regular basis. African Greys who are emotionally abused by someone who bangs on their cage or routinely squirts them in the face with a spray bottle for discipline may pluck. A single frightening experience has caused Greys to become feather pluckers. Any bird that plucks should first see a veterinarian. If the veterinarian cannot find a physical reason for plucking, behavioral problems should be explored. There is no question that African Greys are among the most intelligent parrot species. This higher degree of intelligence, along with possible incorrect early socialization at the breeders and not understanding the bird’s intellectual needs when it becomes a companion parrot often leads to neurotic habits -- such as plucking.

Oh my, I think most of us for some odd reason or another have had someone say something to try and spoil the joy in our lives and bring us down. (to their level in this case) but, you must remember that you know who you are and you know that you are a wonderful mama to your fid. Don't ever let anyone take away from your happiness or try and get you to rethink your decision to become a parront for life. Its her problem as she is the one who is just jealous, and somehow seems to know what its like to have one??? maybe she didnt measure up, I agree with Tycos_mom.

Welcome you guys! Congratulations on the new TAG baby!

ADORABLE! Whatta Proud mama you must be!

Awe. You know what? I am the SAME way... I know that everything happens for a reason. You were chosen to be this birdies mama, unless the previous owner somehow ends up going on a serious hunt and does end up finding you and the grey after all. ( I personally dont think the owner cares enough or you would not have found him in your yard in the first place )

A few questions for when my baby CAG comes home
myafricanqueen replied to orphan1965's topic in The Nursery
I personally do not cover my bird up at nite as I think they should be able to have good air flow as well as be able to see a little if they NEED to for whatever reason. A total of 12 hours each day is good enough for sleep, my birds nap during the day as well. I put Dalia to bed btwn. 10-11pm. Unless she really doesnt seem ready, usually cuddle time is 9-10pm so by 10/1030 she is yawning and ready to go to bed. Because she always wants to be with me, I give her a little treat in her dish when I put her to bed in her cage. Perches should be all sizes and types. Do not place them over the feed/water dish as she will get her droppings in it! ew! She should bath when she is comfortable with you and your home. Dalia took a week and a day or two before she wanted to. Your baby will most likely be shy and rather quiet as far as sound making and such until she is used to you and the environment. Good luck when you get your baby, you must be so excited I know I was and I could hardly wait to go pick her up! Cristen -
Congratulations on your new baby AG! We would love to see pictures and hear all about Coco. Good job on the NO CLIP of the wings, a birdie without wings is like a human without feet. You should have Coco out of the cage as much as possible. JUST BE CAREFUL she is secure in the home as she could fly out of an opening and you would be VERY SAD and its hard to find them after they escape no to mention all of the terrible things that could/would happen outside. I also want to say that you are now on a life long journey and commitment of being this birds flock companion as well as her caregiver/Mama. What is your baby eating as of now? I wish you all the best with Coco

Oh my whatta beauty. You must be SO proud! YOUR BABY IS GROWING UP!!!

In my opinion they do this from stress either from lack of a good diet, not enough attention, being bored, etc. what type of diet is you grey on, what is the normal daily events. . .?
-
awe thats wonderful....

Good advice Judy. My cockatiel Timmy is that way too, it takes him a month or so before he will accept anything new.

What do you do when you go out of town???

I agree with Joolesgreyuk! -
you are most welcome. Do let us know what the third breeder has to say... and of course when purchasing a grey or any parrot, Don't go for the bargain.. I think you get what you pay for. It takes a lot to hand raise these babies. The babies might be eating on their own at 12 weeks for sure but the breeder should want to keep the baby to make sure that it will not want to go back to hand feeding.

I also would like to recommend these books: For the Love of Greys... by Bobbi Brinker Of parrots and people... by Mira Tweti These books will let you know the time, care and attention these birds NEED daily for the rest of your life.

Awe!! that reminds me of my sweetheart Dalia. She sits in my lap and lays her head down low and waits for my fingers to start! If I dont start petting/scratching she makes little noises and nudges my hand or lightly nibbles and she doesnt let me stop either. I have to say okie pretty girl its about 1130pm and you should probably get into bedtime mode, after an hour of cuddle time she is ready for bed anyways. she starts to yawn and close her eyes, enjoy that time with your grey as a lot of owners don't have the pleasure of this interraction.
