{Feel-good-00020114}My african grey Emma truly loves her showers. They last anywhere from 10-20 minutes and a jolly good time is had by the both of us. I've noticed that no matter how much I spray her she never looked soaking wet or drenched. I've always thought that it seemed a bit odd because I really spray her very thoroughly with my hand held showerhead and am certain that she couldn't be any wetter if she were caught in a rain storm. Emma also helps the process alot by spreading her wings and fluffing up... (I always call her my sexy eagle when she does this and she loves it). Alot of members on here and other forums have posted pictures of african greys who look soaked to the bone after bathing or showering and I thought that was kind of neat. I asked my avian vet about this today. She told me that Emma is in excellent health and her feathers are thick, plush and lustrous. The reason why she never looks "soaked" is because her preening glad is functioning very well. Did you guys know any of this?

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/09/05 01:37

Great poems from the both of you. Thanks!!{Feel-good-00020114}

Poor Tobie! The lawn mower and LOUD constructions seems to stress out Emma too. I think she doesn't know what to make of it.{Feel-good-00020114}

Ever wonder why our parrots love this? My Emma absolutely loves it. The more exaggerated, emotionally charged and animated .. the BETTER. She gets a big kick out of receiving drama as well as dishing it out. When she talks it is never in a monotone voice..always full of anunciation and conviction. Her latest phrase is "My name is Emma, where's my red bum bum?" It is hilarious to watch and to hear,{Feel-good-00020114} I've put away the camera for a while because she has started to regurgitate when she sees it aimed at her. Besides making me want to hurl .. I don't want my Emma bringing up her nutrition for she needs it for herself. Truthfully... she really is my sunshine each and every day.

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/09/01 04:30

Ignore seems to be the best option. -
Either way is fine.

It is my opinion that fresh clean water and pellets should be available at all times. Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and other healthy foods can be served whenever it is convenient for you. Of course all cooked or raw foods should be removed from the cage before it spoils. I always remove between 45 minutes to an hour.{Feel-good-00020114} Ziggy looks very handsome.

Adorable.

I boil mine for under a minute. Emma loves lima beans.

What ever you decide is your decision alone. If you decide to post about this topic then you must be prepared for some strong opinions. The only thing that I'd like to add is that if you decide to have your african grey's wings clipped then have them done by an EXPERIENCED AVIAN VET this also means someone who understand the african grey parrot and knows how they need to be clipped so they don't hurt their keel bone should they attempt to fly!!

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/08/30 17:17

What a nice flock and great introduction! Welcome aboard!{Feel-good-00020114} -
You sound very lucky Judy when it comes to Josey:P . In Emma's case ...biting usually occurs when she isn't in the mood to do something that I ask her to do ... example step off of her Atom. Obviously her way of telling me to bugger off and leave her alone to play.:angry: I have since learned that she will do just about anything I ask as long as there is something in it for her.. therefore I have also learned to verbalize ALOT more with Emma.

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/08/29 23:11

I was wondering if any of you have a parrot who refuses to bite you or cause you pain under any circumstances. i.e towelling, nail filing, etc. In my household it is Sachi my white capped pionus. She is always extremely gentle even she is very displeased with me. I find that incredibly amazing considering that she has a very strong beak. I don't even have to work at reading her body language and don't fear her beak in any way. With Emma my grey, I am hyper sensitive and always on alert for any non compliant signs from her. From there I immediately go into negotiation mode with her in order to have a happy and painfree outcome. Emma really has me trained doesn't she?:blush:

I didn't get a puppy because.......
lovethatgrey replied to JillyBeanz's topic in Off-Topic Discussions
I love puppies. The only thing that I appreciate about not having a puppy is having to go out and walk them when it is cold wet and dreary outside. I would think that other than that... parrots are MORE work. -
Goodluck!

Thanks Dave for your explanations, illustrations and knowledge. That was a very interesting read. It helps me to understand Emma a little better too. Her feathers are finally growing nicely after she was clipped TWICE before coming home to me. I've always practiced wing flappng exercises with her but NOW she can actually control her flying and land where she intends to land. I have noticed that this seems to have increased her confidence when it comes to moving about.

Post edited by: lovethatgrey, at: 2009/08/29 05:22

What time does your Grey wake up in the morning ?
lovethatgrey replied to bettyboop's topic in The GREY Lounge
Emma starts to talks aloud around 7:30 am. This is her way of letting me know that she wants out and it's time for me to wake up too. Sometimes she chooses not to talk and prefers to imitate the microwave. If I ignore her then she tends to quiet down. I usually get out of bed when I hear her because I know that she needs to go potty and prefers NOT to do it in her cage.{Feel-good-00020114} -
Always be MINDFUL of their INTELLIGENCE.
lovethatgrey replied to lovethatgrey's topic in The GREY Lounge
Thanks guys. It truly saddens me when I think of the the thousands of african greys that’s are mistreated, neglected or exploited. These parrots never have the chance to thrive or meet their maximum potential. Our pet parrots are truly at the mercy of human beings. They have no control over who finds them or chooses to purchase them or abandon. It is the very lucky parrot who is chosen by a good parrot owner.
