Just in case any out there are in the Ohio area (or are willing to drive a ways), the Ohio Bird Fair will be at the Double Tree hotel in Columbus, OH this coming Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Here's a link to the info if anyone's interested! http://www.ohiobirdfair.com/

Might I ask if your mom and dad have also read up on AG care? If not, maybe gently mention the idea to them...

I don't know anything about rehabilitating a bird who has come from such awful treatment as what you described, so I'm unable to give any advice. But I did want to get KARMA to you for having the big heart to bring him into your home, and trying to show him the care and concern that he has deserved his whole life. Please keep us posted on the progress!!!

Welcome!!! How exciting for you! I know it took what seemed like a lifetime for our Chimay to be weaned and come home to us, but the best advice I could give is to just read read read everything you can on this site. There are so many greYt people here and a lot of very useful information. Have you picked out a cage yet? And I'd like to second the request for pictures! We love pictures here. Congrats on the baby grey and WELCOME again!!!!

Chimay always settles down on my chest on the couch for cuddle time...I'll scritch and rub him all over his face, his neck (top and bottom) and he just loves it. He's not a fan of the body rubs, but that's okay by me. When I need to get up for any reason, I'll offer him my finger as per usual and tell him to step up. He'll block with his body as best he can, laying almost completely on his belly. If I get my fingers within reach of the stepup, he'll step on with one foot and over with the other, snuggling up to my neck and lying flat on his belly again. At that point, whatever I had to get up for is rendered unimportant

Dave I just have to ask....did you get that pic from somewhere or did you just happen to have a complete miniature prison cell set complete with inmate? If it's yours then I think we'd be interested to know of any other hobbies you have. Ha ha ha!! J/k Dave you know we luv ya!

Aw that is so GREAT!!!!!!! I'm still overly paranoid about hawks and stray cats so Chimay hasn't been out in his harness much. I take him out on occasion to make sure we don't have any regression in training him. That's a good question about the sunlight...I would hate if those delicate little patches of skin around the eyes got sunburnt. I'll definately be checking back to this thread to see what others have to say Congratulations on the "installation" of the Aviator!!!

Ha ha ha!!! Very good point Judy...I guess I am!! :D

No problem! I can't wait till he starts talking...we'll keep working his colors until then, and once he starts we'll start working on him telling me the colors instead of beaking them. Eeeeee!!!! Might I add that I've been telling my coworkers about it, and I think I've been officially labeled the crazy bird lady. Ha ha!

I would try and get her a plain wicker basket...we had gotten one for Chimay when he came home and that helped out with keeping him occupied along with his "table time." You can get it at any craft store (we got ours from Michael's for $14.99), just make sure there is no paint or stain on it. It'll make a mess if she decides she likes chewing it, but totally worth it

Twins with Updated Pics +story lol
chimaysmommy replied to CarolandFamily's topic in The GREY Lounge
LMAO!!!!!! Too funny Carol!! One of the fastest ways to a Grey's heart is through their stomach, er crop, I guess! Ha ha....really cute pictures -
Congratulations!!!! :woohoo: That is so exciting....pretty soon she'll be talking her little beak off!!!

I think that it actually upsets Chimay a bit to see a clean floor under his cage...it's as though he's been insulted! He worked so hard to get the floor just the way he wanted it, then here I come with the big scary vacuum cleaner and screw it all up. Ha ha!

When we first got Chimay we didn't have much in the way of additional playspace, except for his playtop which he seemed to get bored with. So we put an old bedsheet over our coffee table with some foot toys scattered around and let him run around the table. He really seemed to like it...and it gave us a chance to work with him on some training items such as "come here." We'd each sit at opposite ends of the table and take turns calling him over.
-
Aawww!!! He's such a handsome boy! Thanks for sharing him with us!
-
Thank you!!! He's getting his colors right about 7 out of 10 times...He hasn't started talking yet, so this is one of our first Eureka!!! moments thus far.

Last week I purchased a new toy for Chimay, hoping that he would potentially learn to identify colors. I didn't really have high expectations or anything, I figured that best case scenario he'd learn, worst case he'd have a ton of fun destroying the toy. Here's the link to what I bought: http://www.birdsafestore.com/Products/The-Teacher__FM213.aspx Over the weekend I introduced him to it. He had SO much fun pulling all of the different beads off of their little posts, and each time he pulled one off I would verbalize the color to him. After he played with it on and off (he had removed all of the beads), I took his "training treats" out (pine nuts) and told him, "show me yellow" and tapped the yellow post. He beaked it and I gave him a treat. THEN I told him "show me blue" WITHOUT tapping the correct post, and he walked over and beaked the blue post!!! I was so excited!!!! As if I wasn't amazed enough, after a couple more "show me's" I told him to show me yellow again. Instead of beaking the yellow post he walked over and picked up a yellow bead!! I am the happiest paRRont in the world right now!  :woohoo: :woohoo:

That is SO exciting!!! Congrats to you and to Cleo!! B)

So she'll come out if you leave the cage door open for her to come out on her own?

I would LOVE to let Chimay walk all over the house, but we live in an apartment with carpeting that's already got a couple of poopie stains on it. Ha ha. I know when we're ready for a house, hardwood floors are going to be up there on my list of priorities for the birdie's sake. When it was time for bed last night I put him on the floor and let him follow me to the bedroom where his night cage is...it was the cutest thing! I love watching him waddle. A couple times he did a little flying-hop which made me wish for flight feathers for him.
-
Aw man!!! I was really hoping that it wouldn't take so long... Oh well! You're right...he's a great glider. Ha ha! Caitlin I just love that picture you have on your signature of Ecko in flight! Can't wait till Chimay can do the same

Chimay was sent to us from the breeder with a long clip to his wings, which I didn't necessarily have a problem with since all of the babies were allowed to fully fledge before coming home. We do intend on allowing his flight feathers to grow back in completely and keep him unclipped. I'm starting to get SO impatient waiting for them to come back in! He's very happy and not clumsy at all, but there are times where I would like him to be able to go where he needs to when he wants. i.e. When we're cuddling on the couch, I'll see him begin to eyeball the top of his cage for some food/water or his Atom but all he can do is wait for me to put him there. Sometimes it's difficult to guess where he wants to go. He's becoming more assertive and gliding down from his Atom when he wants to get off of it, or off of his playtop. No questions really, just wanted to whine for a few. Ha ha!

CUTE pictures Carol!! I'm so glad to hear that the twins are doing so well! That Ahmani sure does sound like a confident little woman! Haha... Hope all is well with your son! GreYt to hear from you!

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a hard time with Ecko....I wish I knew why he was doing it Maybe he's just being a pushy "toddler" testing his limits and throwing tantrums? Please keep us posted!
