looking for as much help as possible
chimaysmommy replied to misslea77's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Welcome misslea77!!! What is your fid's name? Any photos? Tell us more! If you're looking for lots of information to help you out in caring for your baby you've come to the right place! This site is fantastic and so are the people in it! If you get a chance we'd love to see some pictures of your feathered friend! P.S. Before you get the wrong idea, the photo in my avatar is my boyfriend and our grey Chimay. I've tried to get him to register under chimaysdaddy but he'd rather just impose his image on my username. LOL!!!

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/06/30 21:36 -
It's actually funny you say that, we're already finding ourselves planning on re-arranging the living room to accomodate Chimay's stuff. Ha ha!! We're planning on buying a second office mat and putting the new play tree next to the atom so he can climb from one to the other, and moving our computer desk to our second bedroom. Sooner or later it's just going to be me and Chuck sitting on a beanbag chair in front of a little 10 inch black and white TV while Chimay has the run of the rest of the house! Ha ha!

What a precious little baby grey!!!! Do you already know he's a boy or will you be having him DNA tested? So exciting!

I have to agree with Tycos_mom in that your baby needs to fully learn how to fly and land before being clipped. It's a crucial stage of their development that benefits them so much physically and psychologically. I'm not at all saying that you should clip or not clip, that is up to you as your baby's paRRont. But in order to build up the confidence and physical coordination that is needed after being clipped (or remaining unclipped), he must be permitted to fully fledge. Please keep us posted on the progress!

Oh my gosh how scary!!! Great job in acting as quickly as you did and getting him to the vet in time...

Well the birdie fair was two days ago, and it was pretty good! It was held in a hotel conference room so it wasn't as large as the ones I've heard of that are held at fairgrounds, but we still made out like bandits on toys. All in all, that's basically what it was....a HUGE toy sale. There were some birds there (particularly a bare eyed cockatoo baby that I fell in love with), but the main attraction was the toys. No perches though. So even after spending a boatload on toys at the fair, we still went to Petland after and bought a big manzanita play-tree. As soon as I'm able to I'll post up some pics of his new goodies!

How cute!!!! How nice of her to offer to make you oatmeal! Lol...Can't wait to see some video if you are able to take some!

What a great post Dave!!! Having been a former "lurker" myself it took me a few days to work up the courage to join. I wasn't in any way intimidated by the people, everyone sounded so nice!!!! However it was a little intimidating because it seemed like everyone was SO much more experienced than I was when it came to grey knowledge. In the end, joining this forum was one of the BEST things I could have ever done for my Chimay, and for us! Us bird people have got to stick together! It is the poop-cleaning that binds us. HA HA!
-
Ha ha!!!! I love that shot...The camera certainly loves him, er, her! Lol!

I absolutely agree...If he is ever home alone long enough to where he decides to attempt an escape and there is no one there to rescue him when he's stuck you could have quite a disaster on your hands when you get home. I believe Chimay's bar spacing is about 3/4"

Welcome Chelsea!!!! I really like the name you have picked! That is so wonderful that you're getting to meet your baby and get to know him/her before the homecoming. Have you guys gotten a cage for the new arrival? Can't wait to see some pictures of the sweet little featherball!!
-
Welcome Diane!! When you say that the cage has large bars, do you mean the bars themselves are thick in diameter or there is a lot of space between bars? Please post pics of your baby grey when you can! Like Dave said, BEST forum ever!
-
Also try playing with the ladder in your hands yourself sometimes when you're sitting near the cage doing something else. I had gotten Chimay a foraging box that he was afraid of (NO idea why b/c he jumped on his GIGANTIC atom as soon as it came out of the box ), so it spent some time on the chair next to his cage. When I would take him out for playtop time or time on his Atom, I'd just kind of casually fiddle with it in my hands while watching tv or whatever. Eventually we worked our way up to putting it in the cage. Come to think of it, today was his first day with it inside of his cage! Ha ha... It took him about a week to be comfortable enought to beak and poke at it.

As CeasarsDad said, say what you will about him but death is always tragic. Michael was a major facet in molding the music and entertainment world as we know it today, and regardless of any speculation or accusations, that is one fact that cannot be denied. I am deeply saddened by the sudden loss of such a great icon, and I personally take solice in the fact that he is finally resting in a place away from the prying eyes and flashing cameras of the world media. Rest in peace Michael Jackson

I think that both sides of the debate make sense...My personal feeling about it, is that the act of biting IS a natural instinct that all birds have for both functional and survival reasons (i.e. foraging and self defense). However I think that there is a DISTINCT difference in the context of The Bite between wild and captive birds. To Dan's point, an example of this would be biting in response to something that the bird doesn't want to experience--if they're tired of an activity or their human is doing something that they don't want. Based on what little I know of grey behavior in the wild, I would assume that a similar situation would be dealt with in the wild vocally or via body language. I like this topic!!

BOTH of them are just darling!!!! Love the photo updates guys!

Welcome Jasmine and April! April is a very beautiful little grey...you must be so proud! Does she talk at all? We'd love to hear more about April and see pictures of her if you have them

Ha ha ha ha!!!! That's too funny...Pretty soon Koko will be imitating the car alarm to keep you on your toes!

Aw how exciting!! He is definately a handsome boy B)

My boyfriend had a friend of his over one day about a month ago, and we let him hold Chimay. This friend has a great sense of humor, but quite the potty mouth. Chimay did a great job in stepping up for a stranger, but then his friend looked at Chimay in the face and said "You should learn to say F***!!!" And laughed. I chuckled myself, but winced at the same time. Chimay isn't talking yet, I just HOPE that the F word isn't the one piece of vocabulary that sticks out in his memory as he's practicing his attempts at words.
-
Aw thanks for the Karma!!! :cheer: I will definately be posting pics as soon as I can of all of Chimay's goodies!

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/06/23 20:11

One more comment to my earlier question about whether your parents have done any AG research themselves...maybe invite them to join the forum? Even though they are clearly trying to teach you that this is "your pet" and your responsibility, they are in the same household as the AG and therefore owners themselves. I think it would be greatly beneficial to all parties involved (you, parents and AG) if everyone is as educated as possible. Assuming she hasn't already, if your mom were to read up on greys--not just the "how to care for" instruction books, but read the experiences that everyone here has had with their greys, she may consider lifting the deadline that she's placed on your grey. It's unfair to the bird to place any kind of deadline on training, since they are SUCH individuals and no two grey personalities or learning curves will be alike.

I'm really fortunate because this bird fair is falling only 2 days after payday! Haaaaa!!! If that's not danger I don't know what is. Lol!!
