1. Yay!! I just received confirmation that my Pack should be shipping out sometime today or tomorrow. They did talk me into a replacement canvas and 3 more mosquito nets for $39.00 marked down from $55.00. I'm such a sucker  Ha ha
2. Aw poor Kea....Here's hoping for a quick toe-recovery!
3. Thanks guys! I can't wait!! Just waiting to get my shipping notification which, according to the site, will happen within 48 hours. Crossing my fingers!
4. Ha ha ha! Are they still doing that to you? Since when do pigeons have big ol beaks and bright red tails?
5. Just ordered it today!! I'm really excited...I had gone to www.flyingsouth.com and saw that they were having an $80.00 off sale, and my total purchase after the mosquito netting and shipping was $118.00
6. From what I understand, a Teflon pan that is in perfect like-new condition is thought to be safe...but one that has had the surface compromised in any way, microscopic scratches from everyday use can emit the deadly fumes even when not overheated.
7. Oh!!! I hadn't thought of that Dan...good call! When he said "plucked" I hadn't even considered damage from flapping around.
8. Hmmm...that is strange. Aside from you not being home it doesn't sound like anything had changed around in her environment that would stress her into plucking. If there doesn't seem to be any kind of environmental or emotional reason for the plucking, you might want to consider a quick checkup at the vet. Greys can begin to pluck if they're not feeling well and hiding an illness. I do recall reading a post here where a grey had plucked in response to an inner ear infection. How is she doing today?
9. Aw poor Storm!!! Do you use a seperate night cage when she goes to sleep? Does she usually have a cover over the cage (whether it be a night cage or not)? If so was she left in the cage covered up? The reason I ask is our Chimay is very accustomed to his night time routine, and insists on going into his night cage right around 9 every night. We'd gone out of town last weekend, and like you, my mom had stayed at our place to watch him. She left around noon Saturday, and unfortunately we arrived later than expected. We got home at about 11:00pm to find Chimay looking a little overwhelmed in his big daytime cage. I opened the door and he just had this wild look on his face like he just couldn't understand what was going on. If Storm has a nightly routine that she's very accustomed to, especially if she has a seperate sleeping cage, it may stress her out to deviate from that. As far as the clipping goes, unfortunately I'm not sure what to suggest. Our Chimay is already clipped and his flights are growing back. I'd like to think that it is possible for her to adapt to the feathers missing, but I'm sure someone else here with more experience in plucking and how it effects flight can comment. Keep us posted!

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/08/04 22:30
10. Oh I'd forgot to mention....on days where I don't have to work and can afford the time to clean up after him, I smash about 5 slices of banana up with a small dollup of peanut butter along with flax seed. Then I put it on a plate and watch his face get messier and messier. Ha ha! It's particularly fun to fling as well
11. Here's what I'd posted in the Simple Grey Recipies/Cookbook room. They're pancakes using a modified version of the recipie on the back of a box of HungryJack pancake mix. This has been a HUGE hit with Chimay. HungryGrey Pancakes (yeah I know, the name needs work) Following/altering the recipie on the box of HungryJack pancakes. I only have one birdie so I went by the instructions for smallest increment, which was 8-10 pancakes. -1 cup pancake mix as the box directs -1 egg, crumbled and washed shell included -Substituted the 2 tbsp. of cooking oil with 2 tbsp of red palm oil -Substituted 1/3 of the 2/3 cups of milk in the directions with organic applejuice -3 large strawberries, diced fine -3 blackberries, smashed (the berries that I have are from my mom's local farmer's market, and they're HUGE) -About 6 snow pea pods diced fine(I lost count...was watching TV while I made this. Ha ha) -A small handful of flax seed -"Powdered" almonds...ha ha. I run almonds through a coffee grinder that I have to grind spices and it comes out as a fine powder that I usually sprinkle on his dinner -Make like regular pancakes. I used a soup spoon for dishing out the batter for teeny birdie cakes. I'm sure you can modify the fruit/veggie content to whatever your birdie likes or what you have around the house

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/08/04 22:06
12. To be honest I would probably pitch wooden toys...especially if they have a lot of nooks and crannies in the design. You can try and disinfect them, but if there are a lot of hard-to-reach places I wouldn't chance it. As far as wooden perches, I have heard of people baking them to disinfect but I have no idea what temperature or for how long. Hopefully someone else here has some experience in disinfecting wooden perches. Keep us updated on your baby's homecoming!
13. Pat he is just magnificent!!!! Those colors are SO gorgeous! KARMA to you for getting him out of the situation he was in....he's going to think he died and went to birdie heaven in that greYt home of yours!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!
14. Hmmmm....that's kind of a tough one. I would think that making sure that he is waking up and going to bed at the same time every day should take precedent. Varying the hours he wakes up that drastically might cause issues with the quality of sleep he gets each night. Just thinking out loud here. Things that occur during the day while he's awake such as when you leave/arrive from work are things he would probably adapt to a bit easier than messing with his wakeup/bedtimes. You never know, with your hubby being the only one home on a semi-regular basis when he wakes up might improve their relationship! That's what had happened with us and Chimay...my boyfriend used to work until 9pm every night, and Chimay was always in bed by the time he got home. About a month ago, his schedule changed and now he gets home before I do. Having "daddy" get him his dinner and play with him until I get home has really done greYt things for their relationship.

Post edited by: chimaysmommy, at: 2009/08/04 20:04
15. He's probably feeling a bit apprehensive after his crash...he doesn't understand what happened or why, plus his surroundings aren't completely familiar yet. If he won't come out of his cage, don't force it. You can sit in front of the cage with the door open and just talk to him, maybe give him treats inside the cage with no expectation of stepping up or coming out. Eventually he'll get his bearings again and come out of the cage. Bribes of food/treat in exchange for a step up is just fine...ha ha. When Chimay is in the midst of exploration in the apartment and I need him to step up he doesn't always want to comply so I do bribe him with a pine nut. He's just having too much fun and doesn't want to stop his exploring. As far as the crash landings go, they will happen as Star gets the hang of flying and landing successfully. Chimay came to us clipped from our breeder, and we are allowing his flights to grow back (I never intended for him to be clipped). We've had several crash landings, but even clipped he is still learning to "glide" very well. He even made a successful perch-type-landing on our apartment stairs railing! It will come, but in the meantime I agree with Caitlin--stickies on the windows to help him realize that there is a window in the way and any other precaution you can take to ensure his safety as he's learning to fly well.
16. Ha ha ha ha!!!!!! That was a greyt story Jayd...Spock sure sounds like a couple of handfuls! Thanks for sharing!
17. What can I say Davey?? You da man!!! That was very sweet and a greYt poem!
18. Houdini!!! I like it! I agree I wouldn't worry too much about the grapes...plus his environment is still very new to him so he might be more apprehensive now about new food than he will be once he gets his bearings, so to speak. Just keep offering, and eventually you'll find out what he likes.
19. Oh, and when it comes to buying food for your FID make friends with your freezer I never truly knew the value of the freezer until Chimay came into my life. Ha ha!
20. That's certainly a greYt sign!!! Have you gone online to look up any other avian vets out of town that you could call to get their insight?
21. Aw!! Silly baby being startled by a butterfly...ha ha ha!!!
22. Ha ha ha!!!! Did the vet respond to the "what kind of bird are you" question? Lol! What a cute story...thanks for sharing!
23. Oh Arun I'm so sorry to hear about this....My thoughts are with you, your wife, and little Chikki. Sounds like you're doing all you can, just keep it up and hopefully the three of you are reunited soon
24. Congrats on the successful homecoming!!! Your little grey girl is so precious, and the blanket photos are just heartwarming. I'd frame that one of her sleeping if I were you! Just adorable
