Welcome to this family group and hope to see posts soon -
I guess the bird is jealous, they get too attached and they want all your attention. Im not really sure how you can deal with Reena, but I think try to spend some time with her training her (with positive reinforecement) on how to keep her voice down when baby sleeps... Good luck

Hi I think your bird might be bored or doesnt have enough to chew upon, so he chews on your cabinets. Does he have any wooden toys? I suggest giving him toys to keep him busy, You can make some of the toys yourself. Check out this site http://www.parrots.org/pdfs/all_about_parrots/reference_library/behaviour_and_environmental_enrichment/Parrot_Enrichment_Activity_Book.pdf and http://www.cheepparrottoysntips.com/ and this: http://www.companionfids.com/toys/toyphotos.htm

So sorry for your loss. Its a sad sad thing, especially when one day the bird is happily playing and the second is sick and you dont understand the transition...My thoughts are wih you. Getting another bird to care for and play with helped me feel better...

Thanks for sharing :silly: Its really interesting :lol:

I am sorry to hear this. I know that feeling and I how difficult it is. Geting another bird immediately helped me to feel better cos i couldnt bare the empty cage, perhaps getting another bird as soon as you are ready will help you deal with this

I have done a simple stand for my bird. It didnt cost me much, a y shape tree branch, some cat litter and a plant pot. I have decorated it with some toys. After checking with my vet, he suggested that I disinfect the wooden branches with a pet friendly disinfectant, let it sink in, wash the tree well afterwards, then let it to dry in the sn for few days to make sure its clean and bacteria free. I have attached a picture of it. Hope you like it...

HI I am working on a small stand for my bird, with the same material, but in order not to take any risk with PVC, I am wrapping the whole thing with a small cotton rope (3mm). It takes a lot of time but at least I know bird has better grip, can climb on it and it hides away the PVC. Once I complete each stick, I stick the end under the plastic connector and it holds pretty stongly. I will wash the rope wrapped plastic bar with disinfectant that is bird safe and let it dry out in the sun for a while... Lisa...lovely idea...If you get to graw other designs please share with us...Thanks a lot Rana{Nature-00020097}

Post edited by: ranaz, at: 2009/03/21 12:25

Thanks Dave for your advice, Ive had a long talk with the vet today as he explained to me how to disinfect my house and the bird cage. I will start looking for a breeder and a bit older bird around one year old or so Im really concerned for all the birds that the shop gets and dispenses...Im not sure if I can do anything for them...

Hi Hope Bubba is doing better today...he seems cute and Im sure with enough love and care he will open up soon... As for the age, I know that when his eye color changes as he gets older, starting from almost black on birth to dark grey 3 to 6 months of age to light grey around one year then to almost yellow he gets more than 2 years old. After that some people can tell by looking at the beak, but Im not really sure how that is done... Take care of him and enjoy

I would like to write this in the memory of my sweet KOKI who died due to this viscious disease. I got a second bird from the same shop, but the bird didnt look very healthy, so after doing the recommended DNA test, she was also positive for the same virus and destined to die due to the same disease... I have done a lot of reading about it, and the more i read, the more angry I become, as there is no known treatment for this and it kills all baby grey birds. They are working an a vaccine but nothing is final yet... I am going through the process of disinfecting my home now in order to prepare to adopt a new bird, hoping that it will be a clean one now. What I would like to say thay when i fell in love with the parrot and decided to look for one, I have read a little about them, but I was never prepared for this. What disturbed me the most is the pet shop who bring in these ppor babies, exposing them to the visious virus which lingers everywhere in his shop and is prone to affect all birds that get in contact with it... God Bless all those sweet creatures.

I have seen the same with my bird when i bathed him the first time under the shower. Its just like a small balloon of water parallel to the neck bone on the backside of the neck. I wasnt sure of it but it disappeared in few hours and nothing else happened. Sfterthat i became really careful not to spray lots of water over the head as Koki tends to drink all of it, so it went fineafter that. Just try to reduce water falling over the head and mouth when u shower your bid Good Luck

Great News...Im so happy for you Ive lost a bird to that disease 2 weeks ago... I adopted a new one, a baby, after the vist and discussion with the vet, he tested the blood of my new baby for this disease and im still awaiting the results and hoping it will turn out negative. In the mean time im trying to be so carefull and I keep praying that Koki will be clean...

how early can we start using this on a bird?
-
I have burried all Kokis toys with her... I have washed the cage and all the room where she had been with antiseptic and I have sprayed germ killing Dettol after washing I let it air for 4 to 5 hours and I have carefully washed the wooden perch inside and done as Falconeer suggested, I have baked in in the oven for around 10 minutes. It didnt burn but it browned and I guess that should be enough. I have even washed the walls cose to the cage with dettol, w ashed the carpet beneath the cage. Anything else you think i shouldvve done?

Thank you Caroline...I cant believe how lucky I am to join this website and get to meet you and the other online You seem very caring and sweet Thank you for the concern about my new baby bird I am npt exactly sure but the shop keeper said she must be around 4 months. I wasnt aware that she still hand feeds until she started making this strange noise but Falconeer told me its because she needs hand feeding. I dont know how often but Falconeer tols me around 20 ml each time should be enough. Im gona take her to a vet on Saturday to examine her and get some advice. In the mean time if you have any info that can be helpful, I will really appreciate it Thank you...really
