  1. George came from a woman who had 50 other birds. Which I beleive is part of the problem. She got him cause she thought her other grey was lonely. Anyone who has that many birds cannot take care of them the way they deserve to be taken care of. Give the the attention that they need to be happy. Goroge bites and doesn't really like to be spritzed with the aleo vera juice. He bites at the bottle too. He came to us with the feathers plucked from under his wing. And he's still plucking. But no were else just under his wing. Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't take anything for George. I Love him to death. He was the best present my husband has ever gotten. Even with all the bites blood and scars. I know it will take time for him cause I really think he had a stressfull home before us. I do think that after reading everything you have written you have a good head on your shoulders, and you will make the right decision for you. A rehomed bird deserves a good life just as much as a baby bird. And remember just because the bird reacts good to at the home he's used to, doesn't mean he is going to act the same once you get it to your house because it will probably be stressed out from the new enviroment. So if you get the older bird.! Love it to death and remember take your time and come here and ask many many questions. Some of the smartest bird grey folks are on here. Oh by the way I'm from Texas also. Up buy Tyler. Good luck
  2. can a parrot catch a cold. I have a doozy of a cold, and since I'm the one who takes care of George I don't want him to catch my cold. Does that sound silly:)
  3. I have a 7+ year old grey. He has been rehomed at least three time that I know of, (us being the third). He came to us with one bad habit. he BITES. I have never owned a bird before and frankly never even thought about wanting a bird. He was a gift for my husband which has always wanted one. If I was going to go and buy an African grey I would buy a baby. Just because it breaks my heart not being able to interact with George like I want. We have had him for 2 months now and I have 5 scars from him so far. You have to make sure you have the time and patience for the bird you are going to get if you are getting an older bird that may have probllems. Trust me when George bites me I go in the other room so he can see me or hear me and cry from the pain and then as I'm wiping off the blood threaten to cook him for dinner,(Not Really) But you get the jest of the idea. If it's the price that's helping with the dicession, I would suggest that you keep saving your money and get an younger bird. I Have been a member of this forum for 2 months, and have huge respect for everyone here. They will give you their opinion wether you like what they say or not. But trust me. These people on here know what they are talking about. They have helped me alot. Just by reminding me to be patient, and offering ideas as what to do . I'm still being helped every time I sign on here. But having rambled on like i did. Make a good decision in what ever you do. And when you make that decision keep coming here and ask questions. Everyone here will help with anything you need.
  4. I have been noticing lately that Grorge has been using his foot toys to scratch him self. Expectly on the back of his head. Could it be that he has mites? and is there something i can buy over the counter for them. And would it hurt to treat him for mites wether he has them or not.
  5. I was out in the backyard at my sister house. Which is about 10 acrees. I found a vine wrapped around a tree cut it down and brought it home to hopefully use it on a play stand we're building for George. But I want to make sure it is ok to use. I did some research and I think it's called Bittersweet. It was wound around the tree so tight it left indents in the tree. It looked cool. Thanks
  6. ah that's a good idea. He has a vet appt. next week.
  7. not that we're at this point yet but what weather type can greys go out in. It's starting to get cold here in Texas, and wanted to know whats the lowest temp they can handle. I haven't kicked on the heat in the house yet. I don't know what to do with him.... the heater hasn't been on since last winter of course so when we do turn it on it's going to have that smell that heaters have when they have sat over time. Is it going to bother George or should I try to get him out side?
  8. Do greys go so sound asleep that they fall off their perch? When george goes to bed at night I think he goes so sound asleep he fall off the perch he doesn't do it all the time. But when he does he does it at least twice in a night. Or should this be something we should worry about
  9. hey I just wanted to give an update on George. We have a house full of people here for the next 10 days. So I haven't worked much with him in the last few days. But everyone saddles up the horses and went riding. So we got in some work one on one. We're still working on steping up. He will step up one the hand perch with both feetafter he bites on it a bit. and then step over off of it. So how do I get him to seay on the hand perch without him stepping off immediatly. I am trying to get him out of his cage and in a room he's not used to to work more with him. But he won't stay on my perch long enough.
  10. you guys must have read my mind. Cause I was looking for Palm Oil at the grocery store tonight. Couldn't find. Doug said well you know who to ask where everyone else gets it. Yep my new grey friends. If it weren't for you guys George would probably be in bad shape. Thanks Marla{Feel-good-00020114}
  11. that's a long way off but it's good to know. Have way to much to accomplish first LOL Thanks
  12. Doug and I was wondering......Doug being a truck driver and at time i do go on the truch with him at about a week at a time. After George is very well adapted to things here and we introduce him to riding in a car. Would you guys give me your input on George going on the truck. He has very nice truck and cumfy. But if it would be to stressfull we wouldn't do it. Thanks for you inputs
  13. ok thanks for the info.
  14. he seems to be doing ok. Still biting at me so that didn't get knocked out of he...I'm glad he didn't hit anything on the way down
  15. he gave me a scare a little while ago. He was on the top perch in his cage and fell to the bottom. Luckly he didn't hitanything on the way down, and the bottom of the cage is padded with a nice thick blanket. And of courdse i can't touch him to make sure he's ok so i'm just watching him.
  16. ya that's what I was thinking.
  17. I haven't made George a play stand yet. But i have made a couple of T- Perchs, out of pvc pipe. It is very wobbly, not good I think for a still skitish bird. But I used Vet Wrap and the grass rope on it.Vet Wraps a little cheaper than the grass rope. So to not to use as much rope on one thing i used both
  18. Shera tell us how you made you toy when the new room is up an going hopefully tomorrow. George loves to shread paper
  19. do i add the palm oil after the oatmeal is cooked and how much do I add. I was afraid I was feeding him oatmeal to often. He really likes eggs and I know he can only have it once a week, He gets those on Saturday or Sunday.
  20. ah ok thanks, I don't have a carry cage for him yet. Georges favorite treat is Safflower seeds.
  21. What is the palm oil for?. What nutrients do it have?
  22. It's really nice to get the incouragement from everyone on here. Thanks So Much
  23. No I can get him out of his cage with out toweling him. He won't let us pick him up nor does he step up yet. I would love to be able to get him out of the cage though. He will take food or treats from our fingers but if you put a finger in there with out food your gonna get bit.
  24. Does anyone know if Cyprus knees are ok for greys? I was given two to paint santas one for a customer of mine. Looking at them I was wondering if I could make perches with them. Incase you don't know what Cyprus Knees are,... they are the off shoots from a cyprus three. they are grown in Swampy areas. I'm sure someone else can better describe them.
  25. What do you put the palm oil in. I haven't yet gotten that. George loveshis oatmeal also. I also sneak in his pellets is it.
