I am Going to be an Amazon Parront!!!!! Hooray!!!!!
Luvparrots replied to Luvparrots's topic in Cricket's Amazon Room
Louie has stopped hissing at me, so I decided to open his cage and let him out. First I put the other two parrots away. Ana Grey has been lunging at Louie and she seems to be jealous. Not a good thing. Anyway, I put her and Sully in their cages and opened Louie's cage up. He sat on his veggie bowl on the door for quite awhile and then climb around a little at the front of his cage and then back in his cage he went. All in all about half an hour or so of exploring. He didn't try to fly and I just sat and watched him explore. So a good start. Baby steps. Louie is eating well, he loves fresh veggies so I am delighted. Tomorrow is another day, we'll see how it goes. -
Hi Mike, welcome to the GreyForum. I believe that a young grey will adapt to any reasonable schedule without a problem. Many of our members have jobs and their greys are left alone for 8 hours or more. If you have the proper facilities, foraging toys, food and water available and give the grey quality out of cage time all will be fine. With both you and your Mom coordinating time for the grey I believe things will work wonderfully. There are oodles of informative threads here at the forum that will answer a lot of your questions, and if you need, just ask! Crusher is a cutie. My pug just ignores my birds so Crusher and your Mom's grey should be able to come to an understanding as well.

What a wonderful story about your Blue Front, Cricket! This gives me great hopes for my new Blue Front, Louie, age 2 1/2, who I brought home yesterday. Louie stopped hissing at me today and so I opened his door and he has been sitting quietly on his veggie bowl in the open doorway. Is hope you will tell us more about Cricket as she sounds like a lovely little lady who has finally found where she really belongs. Pictures please!!!

I don't allow my fids to land anywhere. I have perches and boings, etc. in each room and that is where my fids land. Before I got my birds I had my whole house changed to laminated wood. I place newspaper under each boing, perch, etc. i am retired so when I get a bird i just insist they land where I want them to. It helps that I have foraging toys at each place and most are in front of a window. I have a large plant stand in front of my patio glass door with bird safe plants and Ana Grey and Cappy love to sit there. Sully, my older ekkie, has all his flights back in but refuses to fly. He was clipped for over 7 1/2 years before I got him. I launch him off everyday and he can flap and glide but does not try on his own. Sully is the only one who poops on my floor and not on the newspaper if he is walk from cage to cage. The laminate makes it easy to spot and clean up.

Well, Louie's first word, "Hello". I am in the computer room and he is in the bird room and he is saying, "Hello". I have been answering him back. I spent the morning with my three parrots, singing to them and talking. Louie is eating well. His prior owner called last night to see how he was. We talked about what he likes to eat. He loves broccoli!!!!! I told her I feed fresh raw vegetables to my fids and she said so did she. She assures me that Louie is use to greys and liked to sit on their cages at her home. We will see. I am still waiting to let Louie out of his cage as he still is leery of me when I approach. But he is trying to communicate and I take that as a very good sign!! -
A harness is the way to go, if not,you can be a great travel cage at http://www.thecountryroost.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=28_29&osCsid=c1535e6804942f2bae9adcb40af747b3 Judy put me on to this website and I have a couple of travel cages from there for my fids. They are great for emergency use and I just pop my fids in them for time in the sun.

I am retired so I am able to be home with my fids. They are flighted (even Sully although he doesn't fly) and they are out of their cages all the time except at night. I have hanging perches, playstands, a branch stand and boings and a cargo net throughout my home in the areas where I spend most of my time. Ana Grey is my diva and likes to be with me a lot. I do not allow her on my shoulder and because she is flighted I just shoo her away and she goes to a neutral perch or boing. I have a plant stand in my kitchen in front of the sliding glass door with bird friendly plants that Ana Grey and my canary love to hang on. I have a large bird swing there and Ana Grey or Cappy are always swinging away. A lot of foraging toys and wood toys are also at these locations. My older eclectus, Sully, is a screamer and he is very set in his ways. If he screams I just sing to him and it quiets him down. Either my singing is terrible or he is reassured by my voice that I am still around. You have to set the boundaries and like with a child you must be consistent or your bird will be in the driver's seat. I talk to my fids all the time and let Ana Grey sit on the back of my computer chair on a towel and she is happy just to be with me. I hope you will keep your Ollie flighted. When I got Ana Grey she was clipped and it was heartbreaking to watch her struggle to take flight. Believe me being unflighted will not stop the digging or screaming problems; it that will only increase them. Redirecting Ollie is the way to go.

Hi Jean welcome to you and your fids. I look forward to hearing more about Smoky. I am partial to TAGs as my Ana Grey is a firecracker! Pictures of Smoky please when you have a chance!

Ana Grey is already sitting on the perch at the front of Louie's cage and lurking around talking to him. So I think Ana Grey is looking for a friend, as Sully just tolerates her. -
My grey has a name!!!and some pics to go with it ; o)

Well hello Louis!!!! You look wonderful! -
When you are walking take your grey's favorite food with you. Call out to your grey using words she will recognize. Example, when I want Ana Grey to come I say, "Come here, want a nut" and she usually comes a flying in for a treat. Mornings and evenings are good times to go looking for your lost baby. I pray you will find you grey quickly. Don't give up and keep looking and knocking on doors just in case someone has found her.

He has already laid on his back in the bottom of his cage and flipped himself through his feet while hanging on to his new cage. He is eating slivers of carrots and beans right now. i have a feeling I am go to be in for a lot of great moments once Louie ( I really don't like this name so if he doesn't really say his name I just mignt change it, we'll see) and Ana Grey become friends. Fingers crossed! -
You are just having too much fun with Ms. Diva. I can't wait to hear more!

He is beautiful and his prior owner said he also says some words in Hindu, although I haven't heard a word in any language yet. We'll see. They got him when he was 6 months old two years ago in June. So his hatchday is sometime in January so I am making him a New Year's baby and so next January 1st he will be three. I'm just delighted he is healthy, I stopped by the vet's on the way home and Ana Grey's vet says he is in top notch shape. I thought it was best to get all trauma done in one day so that now Louie can begin to bond with the fids and me. He is flighted so things should be very interesting around here once Louie is settled in. -

Well Louie is here!!!! He is still hissing at me so I will be patient but I wanted to get a couple of pictures off to you all!!! and again!!!! -
Ana Grey is doing that also. I always say "Want some apple' or nut or whatever. She just comes to me and says "Want some" so I say "What some what" and she says "Want some". I don't give her anything as she use to add whatever she wanted. So we'll see what happens.
-
Congratulations on the new place and that Issac is settling in nicely. So what to you think of the place Stephen?

LOL, my kids understand that my fids replace them, otherwise I would be over at their homes and interfering in their lives, if I didn't have a new batch of kids/fids that need me more!!!!!! LOL Three kids now three fids, one for each of the same personality as each of my children. (One very serious, Sully, one a diva, Ana Grey, and my newest clown, Louie)!!! I am at peace!!!!

Luvparrots replied to Luvparrots's topic in Cricket's Amazon Room
Thanks everyone. I am very excited. Louie has been around greys so I am assuming he will be okay with Ana Grey. Ana Grey is always pestering The Old Man, Sully, and he tolerates her stealing his food, he even moves over so she will feel comfortable in his cage stealing away. Ana Grey needs a friend so I am hoping Louie and she will be good for each other. Because of the health problems with the husband, who for some reason I think was the one who really cared for Louie, Louie is a little "untame" as the wife says. Louie is flighted, Hooray!!!! So once he has his vet visit and he is settled in I am hopeful he and Ana Grey will be zipping through the house and enjoying each others company. I understand Louie loves music so we'll see perhaps he and Captain Caruso, my canary, can have a duet or two. I am excited and, of course, a little worried because Ana Grey is my one true bird love and I don't want her to feel slighted. She is very independent so I think this will be a good thing. As for Louie, I have wanted an Amazon and a 2 year old Blue-Front, one of the three best talkers in the amazon world, for only $350 was just too good to pass up! There will be pictures as soon as I can manage it!!!! Thanks everyone, any suggestions on helping Louie settle in will be much appreciated!!!! -
