Recently adopted an older Grey...
Luvparrots replied to Kaldi0143's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hi Kaldi0143. Kudos to you for taking in an older grey! Is Willie a CAG or a TAG? You are doing just fine by Willie. It's a great idea to let Willie come out of his cage on his own. That's what I have always done with my three. I'm looking forward to hearing more about Willie's and your journey toward bonding. Welcome to the Grey family! -
I give my parrots fresh peppers all the time. They like the "hot" ones which I am allergic to but I still let them have them. Love those parrots! I chop them up and blend them in with the other fresh veggies!

You are right to not overdo the toys in the cage because our greys need room to spread their wings if they want. My parrots are not afraid of new things as I have never assumed they would be. As Barbara suggested switch the toys around after a while so that she is not bored. You are going to be a great parront Jeff, I am, so excited for you and Gracie! Love her name!!!!

I did it! I adopted the Timneh!
Luvparrots replied to braveheartdogs's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
No problem. If your grey is under a year old, you should post in the Nursery. After that, any general info or updates in the Grey Lounge. Illnesses or health questions in the Health Room. If you click on "Forum" it will take you into where the rooms are and their general descriptions. -
I did it! I adopted the Timneh!
Luvparrots replied to braveheartdogs's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
I am totally delighted for you and your new grey! He is gorgeous! How old did you say he was? Just take things nice and slow and let your new grey be the leader. Be sparse with the fruit as it will make his droppings running and really doesn't have much else going for it. Pieces of veggies, carrots, green beans and such much better. I am, looking forward to hearing more. This Room, the Welcome Room is basically for first posts and general information. Check out the other rooms for the appropriate place to post additional threads. I am looking forward to hearing more about your new grey and his new name. Once you get to know him, the right name will show itself! Enjoy your new friend, the fun has just begun! -
Adopted an African Grey but having problems, any advice?
Luvparrots replied to Scottish_Gaz's topic in The GREY Lounge
Hi Scottish Gaz, congratulationns on your re-homed grey. What is his name? My TAG I have had since she was 4 months old, she is now 3 years old. My CAG, is 6 months old and I have had him for 2 months. They both are cuddle muffins. Now I have a 3 year old BF Zon that I have had just one year. He was according to his female owner wild. I do know that he belonged to her husband who became ill and was placed outside. So my zon was a man's man. For the last year he has been gaining trust with me. He will not let me touch him or he will fly off. I have given that effort up long ago and just let him come to me. Which he does. Slowly he is learning to trust me. He follows me from room to room but I let him make the overtures. Once I figured out that my zon really didn't trust woman much and was really the ill husband's parrot, I tried to call them, but the phone number was no longer open. So if you can get information on your grey's previous owner please do it. It can make life and bonding just easier for you. My Louie and I are learning to trust each other he tries so hard to understand what I want from him and so I'm just patient and trying to make things simple so he and I can be great friends someday! Good luck with your sweet grey, be patient and follow his lead. When you want him out of his cage just open the door and let him come to you. Let him be the leader and you the follower. I know you won't regret it! Welcome to the Grey family! -
Thinking of adopting a Timneh
Luvparrots replied to braveheartdogs's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hi braveheartdogs! First, I want to commend you for wanting to adopt/rehome a TAG. I totally love these little greys. My first ever parrot is a TAG which I have had since she was 4 months old. Ana Grey is now 3-years-old and is fearless. She gives me kisses and can shake claw to finger upon command. It was really quite easy as african greys are very smart and all I had to do was show her what I wanted. If she is in the mood, she will come upon my calling. As I am no trainer, I believe it is her wanting to please and her intelligence that made this "training" so easy. I am also owned by a CAG that is now 6 months old and in my opinion, my TAG is the easiest to get along with, at least for me. I look forward to hearing about your journey with the male TAG you are interested in. Welcome to the Grey family! -
I believe you will do what your heart directs you to do. I visited an older ekkie in a local pet shop that was totally miserable living in the shop with several other birds. I would visit him and bring him treats and foods. The owner eventually came down in price with one I was willing to pay as it was very apparent that this ekkie liked me. Sully didn't really fit in with my Ana Grey and I eventually found him a new home which he totally loves. Sully is over 10 years old and is picking up words and names. He goes bus riding and outdoor mart shopping and he is totally happy and I am very pleased for him. So whatever you decide to do will be the right thing. I will say that purchasing from a good breeder is my favor way to go. I was very lucky to find my young CAG for $850 and he is very tame and social. I am delighted with him.

Way to go Molly! You certainly are a smarty! Congratulations Kathy on your little smarty pants. Can't wait to watch her vocabulary grow!

I first purchased a harness with all the clips for my first grey and frankly, didn't like it much with all those heavy latches. I immediately purchased an Aviator when I learned about them, and it is much more pet friendly in my opinion and much lighter. So having had experience with both, I would go with the Aviator Harness. You just slip the head opening over the head, slip in the wings in the appropriate places, adjust to make sure it fits cozy and you are good to go. The attached leash is about 6/7 feet long and you can purchase a longer flight line to go with it if you so desire.

NatJ congratulations on your new grey. You should post your questions in our Nursery Room, as your grey is still quite young. Dave007 who is the Moderator of that room has oodles of experience with baby greys and can offer you the best advice in this situation.

This is marvelous news that you are finally back home, Dee. I can imagine the joy and relief in Gilbert to be back with his ole buddy Java and back in his own cage! Hooray!
-
That certainly is an interesting question. I believe the only way you will really know is if CouCou is also DNA tested. Perhaps Dave007 who is a breeder will have the correct answer for you. By the way Rana, whose are some really cute pictures!

Great looking box of parrot toys Birdhouse. I have always purchased my birdie supplies on the internet and so I personally know the feeling of "Christmas" when the goodies finally arrive. Great fun in a box!!!

My TAG is a female and loves me to pieces. I had a male eclectus that I re-homed recently to a young man and they totally bonded very quickly. The young man purchased a custom-made leather harness and they ride the public bus and go to outdoor marts all the time. Best thing I ever did and I feel marvelous about the great fit between the two.

Hooray!!!! This is wonderful news and I am so happy for the parront! Thanks for letting us know this great outcome Cupid!!!! I am delighted!

Whew!!!! With an aristocratic name like Aristotle that's a wonderful gender to be!! LOL! Congratulations on your little gentleman!

Great looking soaked baby!!! He looks so very handsome!

I don't mind the pistachios because they are low in fat and I love them too! I get them at my local Grocery Outlet store or online at Oh Nuts. They are roasted and human grade.
-
I have spent a small fortune on unsalted pistachios for my three parrots. They love them also! Much more than any other nut! But no my parrots have never done what you describe. Sounds like you pissed Jasper off!!!! LOL!!!

Dave has given you some great advice and information. Unfortunately parrots are sometimes very fearful of young children as youngsters are so very active. Have you thought about parrotlets for your girls. They are called "pocket parrots" because of their size and playful personalities. That might be your answer to teach your your daughters about parrots and get them accustomed to parrots. http://www.avianweb.com/parrotletsinfo.htm

Hi to you and your handsome TAG, Griffin. I am very jealous of your fantastic aviary and hope to have one somewhat like it perhaps next summer. Fingers crossed. Looking forward to learning more about Griffin and getting to know you. Welcome to the Grey family!

Barbara you granddaughter is just lovely. We are both very blessed to have grandchildren that were born 3 months premature and all is well with them. My grandson turned 2 years old in the later part of June. Egan is a very handsome little grey and I am looking forward to watching him grow. Love those TAGs!!!
