  1. I never really measured the hemp seed amount. Just tossed a handful in with the other seeds and nuts. You know hemp seed is a large part of a canary's seed mix. Helps the males sing better so they say.
  2. My Ana Grey is a 3 year old TAG and she has her spells of talking and of being quiet. My 6 month old CAG is very quiet and he usually only makes noises when the other two are pestering him. I live alone so I'm sure it is the quietness of my home that effects their moods. I do know that if I am on the telephone they become much more vocal perhaps it is because they feel they now have an audience. So how verbal are you around your grey and how active is your home? Try turning on a radio/music or singing to your grey and see if Coco's vocals increase. I believe the more I interact with my parrots the more they express themselves. Give it a try.
  3. My parrots avian vet always does the "painful" things in another room. Never when I am in the room. When Ana Grey and Sterling were microchipped, she took say Ana Grey into another room and then brought her back to me for cuddles and reassurances. I am the heroine and saved the day. Absolutely no after effects.
  4. Well they certainly are adorable and I'm looking forward to hearing more about them. Sun Conures are so darn cute!!!!
  5. Can't wait to see the video and pictures Abbie! Thanks for the great update. I'm a sucker for the kisses too. Love those greys!
  6. Kiwi and Mango are very cute indeed! Are they siblings??
  7. I agree Carol, greys are very addictive. I have microchipped my babies because I want to do everything I can to see that they can be returned to me if they decide to take a little venture outdoors. Regardless of whether or not Tweedy's parronts are found, she is in good hands. Kudos to you!
  8. Welcome CarolC. Have you tried to see if "Tweedy" is microchipped? I have my greys microchipped and registered. If they are lost all anyone has to do is go to a veterinarian and ask to have them read for a microchip, it is free, and the vet will be glad to do so. The vet can easily and immediately know if the grey is microchipped and contact the right place to find out the owner and last known address. We are here to help if we can, any questions, just ask. Welcome to the Grey family!
  9. I tried to subscribe to Bird Times on the internet and... get not taking orders at this time. So sad!!!!
  10. Hi Hal9000. What are the ingredients in the dark bread?
  11. Thanks for the head's up on Bird Times, Dave. I have been looking for a new bird magazine as I agree with Dan, Bird Talk is just not there.
  12. Jason, I live in the State of Washington so I am unfamiliar with what is available in your area. Have you no family or good friends to help under these circumstances? I wish I could help.
  13. I don't cover my parrots cages. To me it would be stuffy and I believe in fresh air. Have you thought about a sleep tent. When my grey was younger she loved her sleep tent. I guess it made her feel cozy and safe. Here is an example of a sleep tent: http://www.birdsupplies.com/Scooter-Z-Bird-Sleep-Tent-p/str%20001xx.htm I just hung one inside the cage. Ana Grey loved it!
  14. Hi khaiqha, my greys are non-pluckers but are only 3 years old and 6 months so I have no personal knowledge about greys that pluck. I do know that plucking can be caused by a number of things including stress, changes, lack of vitamin D (sunlight) and health issues. I certainly have no information about it being a "problem" with greys. I don't believe we have an overabundance of members who have greys over ten years old so I don't know how many answers you will be getting from owners of older greys.
  15. Hi Malikah! Happy Hatchday Kito! You have a great mommy there! Love the little update and so glad you are now flying again Kito!! I had an ekkie that was a plucker since I got him from a pet shop where he resided for 7 1/2 years. I gave him sterilized hemp seed, which it is said helps pluckers. He is doing great in his new home and his owner is still giving him the hemp seeds because Sully is no longer plucking his chest and back feathers. Perhaps hemp seeds will also help Kito. Check it out on the internet.
  16. I purchased my CAG in August, 2011, in Oregon State for $750.
  17. I am a big fan of ceramic cookware. I love eggs sunnyside up and my ceramic skillet is certainly the way to go!
  18. Each grey is different and so you will need to try different methods to get the results you want. My Ana Grey is very territorial and although she is the smallest of my flock, she is the swiftest and most agile. She rules the roost. If she dive bombs someone, I talk to her and explain the wrongness of her action. She knows when she is being scolded. I guess it is the tone of my voice. If she continues, she is sent to another room by herself. Ahh the wonders of doors!!!! Of course there is a downfall, when she is bad I say "stop that" and if I do something she dislikes, I get the words right back in my face!!!! LOL!!!! Got to love those smart and mouthy greys!!!!
  19. Joe, I commend you for instead of getting angry you are trying to make others understand the circumstances of the situation. I personally have a jess that a falconer crafted for me for my small Timneh African Grey. Ana Grey doesn't particularly like the aviator harness and has accepted the jess. It works for me and my grey who is totally bonded to me. As you have discovered, we love our greys like family and some get over protective. Please continue to ask your questions as we are all here to help and to learn from each other.
  20. Gorgeous Macaw!!!! Can't wait to see more!!!!
  21. I understand black pepper works for getting rid of ants, also talcum powder/baby powder or plain old cinnamon. Perhaps one of these non-poison remedies will work for you Barbara. Good luck!!
  22. Howdy Mr. T! I am quite envious of your outdoor aviary and hope someday to have one for my little flock! Pictures please and, of course, can't wait to see the Too and Macaw! So glad you joined us. Looking forward to hearing more about your little band, details please!!!!!
  23. Congratulations on your nuptials! Hopefully your fids will forgive you for not inviting them on the honeymoon!!!! Did you forget their presents??? My kids always expected a present if I was gone for a while. Did you forget them during your honeymoon bliss??? LOL!!! Again Congrats on the new bride!!!
  24. Congrats on your new friend. Welcome to the Grey family!
  25. Nope, my parrots are not diggers and never have been. They would rather be pestering me I guess LOL!
