  1. I don't know... Alex has 6 of his flights clipped on the one side and he does every well. He is very grace full and doesn't run into stuff at all. Though yes he can be clumsy sometimes and fall off of his stand. But I think that he is goofing around when he does that.
  2. I would not recimend a too of any kind. Not as a first bird for her. We had a Maximillin pionus. They are very sweet. Not as agressive as a grey. They are a bit smaller than greys. They don't tend to be to very loud at all. Though the one we had quit talking after we had had her for about a year she did say quit a bit before that. They would make perfict first birds. Just remind her that just because a bird has the potential to talk it doesn't mean that it will. Lots of people here all say that thier cags started talking well before the cag was a year old. Alex is now a year and has yet to say one word. He makes lots of sounds but no words. It doesn't mean that I don't love him any less. I love him for his goofy ways and his "singing". If he ever starts to talk it will just be a bonus to the wonderful bird that I have.
  3. Yeah Alex knows how to do stuff but only when he feels like doing it. When he has had enough of whatever we are doing he flys away.
  4. Alex had one wing that recived a light clip before we took him home. He fledged anyway. No one told him that he was not suppost to be able to fly with the clip. He is very graceful. It just makes me wonder how much better he will be once he has molted out the clipped feathers. Our 3 year old senegal Martini came to us clipped. Though he flutters the the floor very well when he feels like it. I need to email his old mom and see if he had already molted out his flight feathers this year. You can see he wants to be able to do what Alex does.
  5. I have the aviator for Alex and love it! There is only one small piece of metal on the whole piece and that is where the bungy part ist attached to the rest of the harnes. The dvd is great on teaching how to get them into it. Alex likes to step up while I'm still getting hihim into it. I think this is mostly because he is excited to go and doesn't want to wait for me to finish! Cdelatorrejr I live in San Diego also. Alex has gone all over with me. The mall, kids school, parks. I have never had a problem with him anywhere we go.
  6. It is a cinnamon I had one for about 7 years until a very tragic accident. Very sweet.
  7. Give him a chance and he will come around. I found with Alex if I eat it first and go Mmmmmmmmm Yummy! Then he is more likely to try it as well. Though he is not to picky and eats pretty much whatever we give him. He also eats dinner with us. He is allowed to eat whatever he wants off of our plates. I think that this has helped to make him less picky. Alex is flighted and will stay that way. Though this is a choice. If you decide to let Brutus stay flighted you will need to work on some flight training with him. Though give him some time to settle in with you. If you can find a treat that he totally goes nuts for then only give as a reword for training.
  8. Remember that your baby is just that a baby. Though noting wrong with starting at an early age. Just remember your baby is learning tons of stuff right now not just tricks. Give him time. I worked with Alex for weeks and never got him to shake. Then my daughter-in-law got him to do it in 2 days while we were on vacation. It just takes time. Though I have got him doing other things that I watched him do first and then just continued to encuraged him to do them. He loves to flip upside down. So now I flip him upside down and have him pick a toy up from the table. This works well for teaching his colors as well. He knows 3 so far. I have some solid colored baby links and tell him what color I want him to get. It's really cute and he has fun!
  9. Alex is a year old and is talked to all the time but so far no words. I will love him no matter what. Though it would be great if he starts talking.
  10. I think our birds tast in music is as veried as our own.
  11. That is great Kevin! Keep us posted!
  12. Very cool! I think I looked at thier sight when we were first looking for a new bird. I think we had decided that we didn't want to have to have a bird shipped. The place here just makes it almost imposible.
  13. Alex loves Strauss. But he also likes big band (late 30"s - early 50's) as well as stuff that ranges from the Beach Boys to Ozzy Osbourn. It just depends on the song more than anything.
  14. I have a friend on another forum that took in a plucking grey. She added red palm oil to Holly's diet. She also mists Holly at least 3 times a week with aloe vera juice. Both are great for skin and feathers! She gets a soaking at least once a week. Holly now has beutiful feathers and you would never know that she use to pluck!
  15. I don't have a problem with taking classes. I too think it is a good idea. Even the cost is not that big a deal. It was the fact that the one here required that EVERYONE in the house take the class. And that they didn't offer all 3 classes every month. It's almost like they are doing everything they can to discurage people from adopting a bird. I don't have a problem with paying an adoption fee. Right now of all of our pets Alex is the only one that we went and bought. All 3 of our cats came as rescues. Our snake came from a middle school scince class (that was about 12 years ago). Our dog came from the pound. And the turtle is from one of my oldest daughters partner's aunts who didn't want it. Martini is also a rehome.
  16. You will love the aviator! That is what I have for Alex and am getting for Martini. Alex does chew on it a bit when we are just riding in the car but if we are moving he doesn't bother it. I have never seen a problem with his feathers. It's a great company! It comes with a dvd and if something happens to it they will replace it.
  17. People become to complacent with a clipped bird. They don't pay enought attention. They take thier birds out without a harnes/flightsuit. Something startals the bird and out the door, off the sholder they go. This happend to my oldest daughter. They had the bird cage next to the door and her partner was getting ready to go out and something startaled Meeko and he flew out the door. Yes he was clipped. She called me totally histarical. I went out there and we looked for almost an hour before we found him. We got lucky that we found him at all. They keep him clipped but he is still quit the flier. They now only take him out in his travel cage. Alex is flighted so never leaves the house without his harnes. Martini came to us clipped. He will not leave the house until his harnes arives. He will be allowed to grow his flight feathers and never be clipped again. Once he starts to truely fly then we will work on flight training. This doesn't mean I would ever let either bird to free fly outside. Though it would be totally cool to see! Flighted vs. clipped is truely a personal choice. My choice is for flighted birds.
  18. We took a two week vacation the first part of July and had to leave Alex with my oldest daughter. I cried after we left her appartment. I had fun on the vacation but I missed Alex like crazy! When he fell in the shower a few months ago and broke the tip of his beak off I just about had a heart atack! I was so upset my husband had to drive us to the vet.
  19. Once you rule out health problems, can the bunk be washed? It is posible that there was something on it that is iritating Alf's skin. It could also be something to do with the mites you found in his food. I hope everyone is better soon!
  20. If he is only a year old and sleeps alot I would be worried. Take him to an avain vet to make sure that there is nothing wrong. Sleeping all the time and lack of interest in anything could be a health problem. After you know he is healthy then everyone has given you great suggestions. Alex loves whole rolls of toilt paper. It makes a great shreder! Alex loves to "help" me make his toys! He has as much fun getting into all the parts as he does with the finished toy.
  21. Hello and welcome! I'm sure that he will be fine while you are at work. It is great that you are taking on a rehome! We looked into the rescue here in San Diego and they make it almost imposible to adopt from them. You have to take classes from them $25 a person and they want everyone in the house to take the classes. And there are 3 different classes you have to take (so that would have been $300 for me). Oh and that doesn't even include the price to adopt a bird. Then on top of that they only hold one of the classes every other month (so at least 6 months just to get threw the classes). Then there is the home inspetion and after all of that there is still no gerintee that they will let you adopt a bird. So yep we went for a baby. Our senegal Martini is a rehome to us. He is 3 years old. I found him via Craigslist.
  22. Don't starve him at night but make sure there are no sunflower seeds at all. Sense he is not flighted try feeding him away from his cage in the morning with fresh food. This way he can't just go and eat his seeds. I posted a great homemade mash resipe that is great for sneeking in healthy stuff. Alex hates the water as well. He had a bad fall in the shower and broke the tip of his beak off. He was bleeding all over the place. He now screams if you mist him or try to take him in the shower. He did take a bath one time at my oldest daughters house while we were on vacation. She has a green cheek that loves water. So he learned from Meeko. She gave me the bowl but he wont go near it here.
  23. Welcome to the forums! Congrats on your new baby! Yep give her no more than a week and she will be chatting up a storm! She is a doll. My baby just turned a year old a few days ago.
  24. Thanks everyone! I am on another forum as well that I have been on for almost a year. One of the moderators is a behaverist so it has been great. But it's always nice to talk to other grey owners too! B)
