I like both those names.{Communicate-0002011B} They are so both so noble. After reading both names, I couldn't think of nothing better.{Feel-good-000200BB} I am so looking forward to his/her arrival.

Congradulations on the your new baby!!! And welcome to the forum. I have a white cage and I really like it. I intentionally set out to find a white cage. Tycosmom was right that the poop shows up every time it happens:laugh: which causes me to wipe it down much more ofen but it always looks nice and clean. Baxter had a dark greyish cage before and I thought he blended right into it. I think he looks better in a white cage. I guess the safety of the cage is the main thing but you do have to look at it for a long long time which should be considered too. I had a million questions when I first got Baxter and everyone was right there willing to help me. This place is great for that and I always say the only stupid question is the one that is not asked;)

Tuki is gorgeous and where ever she is at outdoors is gorgeous country too! Is that a waterfall I seen?

Well how clever is that? It's amazing how they can put a plan together on their own and carry out. I bet you were amazed with her. I am so jealous too because I have tried foraging toys with Baxter in several different ways and he is totally not interested in it all. If he has to work for it, he don't want it:P

Me and Baxter do the dishes together almost every night. I do dishes the old fashioned way by hand:( so in order to make it a little less dreadful I started bringing Baxters perch in and setting in on the counter or sometimes I just set him on my shoulder. He absolutely loves it!! It is one of his favorite things. He talks, he sings, he actually laughs too & he bobs his head up and down. I get so cracked up with him now I looking forward to doing the dishes:woohoo:

I was one who actually did change a greys name. He was 12 years old when I adopted him this last July. His name was Homie and was given to him cuz previous family watched In Living Color and he was named after "Homie Da Clown" LOL:laugh: (I loved Homie Da Clown) I didn't mind the name but my husband really hated it. I felt so guilty and had alot of mixed feelings cuz I didn't know if it would be right or not but we did change it to Baxter:) It did seem to fit him better. He said Homie all the time when we got him, come ere Homie, Hi Homie, etc, but after a couple weeks he quit saying it all together. He does say Baxter now:woohoo: Not very often but he says it. He learned right away that when I approached him I called him Baxter and he responded to it right away. Any time I say Baxter he knows who I am talking to:) Hope that helps. Just for fun every now and then I will say Hi Homie to him and he does remember the name and starts saying it again for a day. But if I don't remind him, he doesn't say it.

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/15 20:54

I couldn't imagine having 2 of them. I can barely keep up with this one:blink: :woohoo: :silly: :side: Bonkers is the sweetest and definately the most tame of my 3. He loves to cuddle and has to be with someone all the time or so he thinks;) He flies all through the house as if he owns it. He pretty much felt at home from the start and acted like he's been here for years. Can't keep him out of a pepsi glass. We have to hide them or he will get it and he knows what it is. He will also try to get the ice cubes and take off with them when ever he gets the chance:evil: When we open the seed jar, he dives right into it:woohoo: He goes into Baxters cage and steals his treats:ohmy: We wash our hands and he runs down our arms and takes a shower in the tap water:lol: He falls asleep on my husband all the time like he did in the photo. If we leave the room, he isn't far behind us:) When we tell him it's time to go in the cage he yells at us:huh: Conures definately have personalities:P Wish I had his energy;) He is a very good bird though. Just active:laugh:

I have gotten several used cages that are in like new condition really cheap off of craigslist.org. It's nationwide and you just put in your location and what you are looking for and it pops up.Type in parrot or parrot cage or bird cage, etc. Try differnt things in the serach box. Never hurts to try. I know I saved 100's of dollars this way in the past. Good luck.

I had never seen those commercials before. I seen the Wassup commercials but not with the parrots. I thought they were great:woohoo: . Can't wait to show them to my husband. He will get a kick out of them, too. {Feel-good-0002006E} Still laughing!!!

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/14 21:26

Oh that's wonderful news. It sounds like it went great. That is alot like my routine with Baxter. I think he knows that when he gets put in his cage his time is limited before it's bedtime so he does a few calls, munches on his goodies and it's no surprise when I go off to bed for the night. I give him a little time to do stuff before it's lights out;)

Hi, I rehomed a grey this past summer and he needed a nail trim desperately. Every time I had him perched on my hands or arm the nails would scratch and draw blood. They were like razors. Anyway, I called for an appointment and she recommended that I wait about 1 month untill he got settled in somewhat. Rehoming is stressful on them and they are so unsure of everything when they go to a new home so and a trip anywhere can be stressful too depending on the bird. I waited the month, took him in and he was the best birdie ever but if you feel he really needs a vet check right away I would take him in. You could also call the vet and get his professinal opinion. I would ask to speak to the dr directly or have him call you when he has the chance or after hours. It is not unusual for my grey to take naps off and on during the day. Seems to be part of his afternoon routine:) Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/14 21:08

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/14 21:12

Thanks dbhelix. Very good to know. Haven't had the chance to check my greys beak yet. He's the only one who hasn't had his beak trimmed but now I have something to go on so I will have an idea if it's too long or not.

Baxter was doing this to me for awhile. I thought it was a new game and it was so fun. He would take my fingers in his mouth and just nibble on them one by one. No real pressure untill he came to a fingernail and he just loves to try to snap it. I did noticed the longer I let him play with my fingers like that he more pressure he started putting on them:unsure: Like he was testing me or something:evil: He would/will also grab one of my fingers with his foot (and won't let go) and start nibbling on another finger. It is soooo cute but like I said as time went on the pressure got more and more untill I started getting uncomforatble with it. Can't say he ever bit down on me like a real bite but I am thinking it's just a matter of time. I don't let him to it very often anymore cuz I think he is getting more aggressive and pushing his limits. I really do think it's all in good fun though.

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/14 20:56

Saphira and her friend are coming home soon!!
BaxtersMom replied to Sallas's topic in The GREY Lounge
Thanks for the update. Sounds like everything is working out just fine for both of them and great news that they have taken to each other in such a close way. Can't wait to see the new pics when they come home. -
i agree with MommaFawkes. Maybe you should search for another vet if possible. Just curious, is it an avian vet you are taking him too? I have had 2 of my birds beak trimmed. They do it at the pet store that I go to. They specialize in birds and fish only. They wrap them in a towel and it only takes a couple minutes and they are done:) It only costs me $8 to get their beaks trimmed they do not put them under. I would be worried about that. I had a local vet for my dog and cat and it seemed like thay wanted to make simple things very difficult and I really think they just wanted my $$$. I don't go there anymore and I am much happier. I have also heard that it is not even necessary to trim a birds beak because they do it naturally themselves. My birds beaks were pretty long when I had them trimmed but I don't know if it was necessary or not. I just put my trust in the lady who owned the store. I would like to know more about if you should or shouldn't trim a beak because I really don't know. The birds did look better afterwards and it might have helped them eat better but I'm not sure.

OMG, your Macaw does look like a parakeet in that cage{Feel-good-0002006E} But wow, what a fantastic cage. I can't believe you only paid $280 for it. That was a steal. That cage will last a life time, too. She will love it in time and learn her way around. It's probably like moving to a new house and getting used to it. Everythings a little wierd at first but just think of all the new things she will be able to do in there:) . You did a great job on putting it back together. The bolts look like they came with it, too. I am impressed with your handiwork{Feel-good-000200BB}

I adopted a 12 year old grey this past summer. His previous owner said he goes to bed at 10 pm and gets up at 7 am. I guess that was the mans schedule. I go to bed much later. Usually midnight to 1 am and I swear Baxter would stay up all night if he could. I usually put him back in his cage about 30-45 minutes before I turn in and give him a few seeds or pellets to munch on before he turns in. Not that he needs it, there's always food there for him but he seems to like getting a special midnight snack;) and it has turned into a routine:) I get up around 8am and he is usually awake by then too. Perhaps he hears me creeping around. I have heard greys need about 10 to 12 hours of sleep a night but Baxter doesn't sleep that long straight. He usually does take a nap in the afternoon though. I've never noticed him to be grumpy due to lack of sleep so I don't see a reason to change it on him. I have 2 other birds, a conure and an eclectus and they usually get tired around 9pm, go in their cages and go to sleep:) They are easy!

I don't know about the spots but Baxter sticks his tongue out the side of his mouth all the time:silly: . Usually when he is checking something out. It's a funny sight, isn't it?

Oh, I really liked this story. That just goes to show ya that "If theres a will, There's a way";) Good thing you had the know how to take the cage apart and put it back together. Sounds like you got a super great deal!!!

There is always someone here ready and willing to help with any questions you may have. I know I had a ton when I first got my grey and everyone was so so helpful.
