Oh, that is adorable!{Love-000200BF} If he is so willing to learn at such a young age just imagine how he will be with a few years on him. Do you plan on teaching him tricks? I can get my grey to lay with his back in my palm like that but he's not too thrilled with it. We are working on it.

I was worried about the same thing when I had the very strong urge to get another bird. Baxter was my everything and I didn't want to upset him either. Plus all the questions about splitting the time up, etc. I did eventually decide to go for it and did get Tigger the eclectus and it is working out very good. There are times I want to give Baxter attention but he has other things on his mind and wants to be left alone:( . That is the perfect time to get Tigger. Tigger always wants attention. It isn't that big of a deal for me because I work from home but it does definately take more time with 2. Mainly the attention part. What ever time you spend with your grey you have to make extra time for the new one. When we are watching TV or whatever instead of having 1 bird on a perch we now have 2 birds & 2 perches:) and that does work out good. What was most surprising to me was that Baxter was my everything and knew he would always be top bird and he still is but what I wasn't ready for was all the love I had for Tigger too. He warms my heart so much and I just adore him. The problems I have found with adding an extra bird was of course the space. I used to have a beautiful front room and now it is full of bird cages:laugh: I like feeding my bird fresh fruits and veggies but neither one likes the same kinds:angry: so it's extra veggies and extra preparation time. Sometimes I still feel guilty when one day I spend more time with one than I do the other but usually make up for it the next day. It's good you are thinking of it before you get the new addition. If I had to do it all over I would do the same thing and get Tigger all over again:) But I still wonder how would things be if I didn't. I know it wasn't much help on your decision but you will come to the right one. It sounds like you are considering all the pros and cons of it. And just because you are considering another bird doesn't mean you are betraying your current one. Good luck. Let us know what you decide;)

Those are some good ideas. I am going to have to string up some pasta for my birds. I think they will like that. Thanks for sharing the ideas.

Hello, so glad you joined us! I've had my CAG since July and he was 12 years old when I got him. He is also the love of my life:) Can't wait to hear more about you and your flock:)
-
There are no dumb questions on here so ask all that you have concerns about. I've only had my grey since July. Totally different experience than any other animal I have known. I could relate exactly to what you are going through cuz i was there myself. Truth be told probably everyone here on the forum was too. Yep, I was overwhelmed and then when I thought of Baxter & his feelings, he had to be overwhelmed too. Probably thought "who is this crazy lady and what is she doing to me?" :woohoo: :silly: I did go too fast with him and I know it. Not sure that is a totally bad thing cuz we made lots of progress on some things real fast too. I just loved him so much:) I did get confused and aggrevated and I would give him a days space, cuz my feeling were hurt mainly and I had to mentally recover:laugh: It was those days I noticed him calling to me and wanting me to come back and give him more attention. Silly bird:silly: You are doing just fine!

Hello and welcome here. That is a mighty fine looking grey you have there:) Looking forward to hearing more about you and your flock.

Two weeks isn't a very long time and he is still getting used to his new home. Let him ease into things slowly or at his own pace without forcing too much on him at once. He may be overwhelmed with all the changes. Greys are such cautious birds anyway and he might not be too sure of his new routine yet. I can't help much with the diet cuz I have a hard time introducing new foods to my grey as well but atleast he will eat the pellets. My grey was 12 years when I got him and I know the previous owner never bathed him:( . I started out with one of those misting bottles. At first I would spray the mist up in the air and let it gently fall so he could get used to it. He didn't care for it at first but I think he did kind of like the water (but would never ever admit it;) ) Gradually I got to where I could spray it directly towards his belly, wings, etc. He will bite at the spray bottle but doesn't run away or back off. I think it became a game to him. Just recently I took him in the shower with me and eased him into the spray. To my surprise after he figured out it wasn't going to hurt him~ He ended up loving it! It all takes time. I know I was very overwhelmed when I first got Baxter and wanted to do everything I could to make sure he was getting everything he needed but I think he was a little overwhelmed too. As much as I wanted to things for him was about as much as he resisted me:laugh: It will all work in time.

I have read many of your posts and know you have helped so so many of us. Hope you reconsider and decide not leave or maybe take a little time off and come back to us??? I wish you & your flock the best.

I can understand stepping down as moderator if you no longer want it but wish you wouldn't leave all together:( Hope you will reconsider.

Sammy is just gorgeous. Congradulations on your new family member. I loved the pictures you shared with us. Thank you. The black palm is so neat. I just watched a TV show and they were talking about them. I think they are very rare. On the program they showed them breaking small branches and playing the drums to get the interest of the females. I have 2 rehomed birds (grey&ekkie) and 1 lost conure that we took in. I feel the same way as you. I would love to have a larger home and turn it into a rescue. Was that a solid blue eclectus in one of those photos? Congradulations again on Sammy. It was fate.

I think a gray would love to go to the barber shop and hang out. Might even draw in more customers, too I think he/she would rather be with you than left at home if the opporunity was available. Just remember they pick up words they hear and if your customers have "foul" mouths  your grey might also pick up the language. I'd say give it a try and see how it works out.

A escape plan is great to have but might not be a bad idea to do a little prevention since you had such a scare. I would call an electrician out just to check all the outlets. It shouldn't cost too much just to have them check it out. If they do find something wrong with the wiring of course it would need to be corrected but it's better find out that way. I lost my first home due to electrical fire. I wasn't home at the time. Was at a barbeque at my moms and when I came home fire trucks were everywhere!! Luckily I had no pets inside but did lose everything elseI owned in that fire:( Hindsite is 20/20. I did have a breaker/fuse that would blow when I turned the dishwasher on. My solution was to not use the dishwasher. That was so dumb of me. It was only a few weeks from me noticing the the breaker problem till the time the fire happened. Electricity is nothing to mess with ever. I found out the hard way. I also have a sticker on my front door/window from the city stating how many pets and what kind I have incase of an emergency and I am not home. It includes our cel phone number and where to take the animals if they can not reach us. Good luck with it. Hopefully it was just the cord that was bad but would have the electric checked by a professional. Hopefully, the cord didn't affect the other wires in the wall. This stuff really scares me now.

I got a male eclectus after I got my grey. I was so surprised at what a super love bug he is. He was 5 years old when I got him so he wasn't a baby but he will just crawl up on my chest, under my chin or on my stomach, lay down and just look up at me with the cutest little eyes. He loves to sit on my shoulder (I know thats not for everyone) and he will preen my hair. He just wants to be close all the time. I have read that eclectus are one of the quiet parrots you can have but must admit he is our loudest bird but I think that is because he came from a breeder. He was not a breeder bird but the mans personal pet but did hear all the noises of the other birds. I think his noise factor is where he is from but he still isn't that bad. I also read eclectus "have been misunderstood" and people tend to think they are "slow, boring, dumb, not as exciting" etc but that is totally not true. Mine does not move as fast (cuz he don't want to because he can;) ) and he is not as curious as a grey. He isn't always looking into other rooms or the tops of the curtains when I have him like my grey does:blink: And he stays put when he is with me. When I have him out with me, he just wants to be close to me and stay there:) He is such a good talker and has many words and phrases. He came with a pretty big vocabulary and his best phrase or 2 phrases are "They call him Tigger, Tigger, King of the Jun-Guuuullll" and he has learned more words from us since we've had him. Eclectus also talk in a high pitched voice that I think is so cute. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with him as fast as I did, especially after reading up on the eclectus but must admit he has impressed so much more than I could have ever imagined. Books also said that the male is more friendly or easy going. The females tend to be more hormonal and more "nippy" than a male. I don't know if all eclectus's are snuggle bugs or super cuddly but my Tigger is. I can hug him back and rock him like a baby and he just stays there and loves the attention. I think the eclectus is a great cuddly bird. Might want to do some research on them because this was just my experience with the one I have. He is also a clown too and has quite the personality. Hope that helps. Sorry if it was too long.:silly: :side: Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/21 04:51

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2008/10/21 04:52

Those pictures are adorable! I bought a teepee hut for my grey and a smaller tent for my conure. Neither one will go in them or even close to them when they are up. It is so cute when they do. I've read on other posts you need to check them regularly for loose strings, threads, etc that could potentially harm them or get a foot tangled or something. Darcy looks like he is quite taken with it and having lots of fun in there. Those are great photos, too.

I agree with cflanny. Great name for a famous bird. Sounds so Hollywood;) I like it.

I use vinegar, too.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I just love hearing when someone takes in an adult bird and they just thrive because of it. Kea & Keana are very lucky to have you. Look forward to hearing more about you and your flock.Â

That's what we were thinking and why we decided to put it up. We certainly weren't expecting a reaction like that:ohmy: It wasn't like he was afraid of it but more like a mission to kill it:evil: . He flew a long ways to get to it and bite it but was still so riled up untill the noise stopped altogether. It was very strange. I can't help but think there must be something behind it from his past. Thanks for answering:)
