1. I have heard many times that RAW potatoes are no good for greys an other parrots but I have never heard the reason why. Cooked potatoes are fine.
2. I was eccentric before I got my birds and I knew it:laugh: As for wierd, I don't think I'm wierd but others may. I really don't care. We are in such a self centered world where people are just out for themselves and would rather text than talk to a person and I am just the opposite. I guess I am an introvert more or less because I just refuse to convert to all the new ways of the world. So yea, I guess I'm a little eccentric and proud of it:) I went back to school last April. I get along with everyone but I wouldn't say I fit in the "click" but that's ok. I found the new greetings for girlfriends is "Hey Bitches & Hey Hookers!" and it is said out of fondness? I guess I'm getting old cuz I don't want to be called a bitch or a hooker:blink: LOL I get more love and happiness out of my birds than I could have ever imagined so I am quite content. They are the reason I love to wake up in the mornings. They greet me every morning and make me laugh through out the day. I do know that people can be kind of wierd about people having birds as pets and just don't get it, but who cares?

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/07/04 19:03
3. After reading Caspers new thread about the weather and posting how hot it is in my area it reminded me of how much I am looking forward to the arrival of my big above ground pool. (it's in the mail so they say) It's just a Walmart Special but it would feel so good to jump in right now. Anyway, I am so Looking forward to my pool arriving and was wondering what are you looking forward to? It can be anything from something to simple to something really big. I think it would be fun and help us get to know each other better. You can post as much as you want to, too:)

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/07/02 22:27
4. It's hot hot hot here in Dallas/Fort Worth Texas! It's been in the upper 90's to low 100's for almost 2 weeks now. It's unbearable in the afternoons. I ordered a big above ground pool last week and still waiting! Hopefully it will arrive today or tomorrow. Oh yea, no rain either. Just dry and hot.{Feel-bad-000200A3}
5. Oh, that's great. You are so creative.
6. Awwww, I do love it{Love-000200BF} Thanks, Dave. It's the Super Dooper Pooper Scooper for me now though:laugh: Karma for you
7. Sure, sign me up for a poem. I've got a whole flock to write about. They were all older rehomed/rescues when I got them. Lets see what you can do. I loved the other poems you have written so far.
8. Oh Judy, what a wonderful place. I would love to go visit a sanctuary and see them cared for so well. I know what you mean about how it makes you mad that some people are so cruel or ignorant about owning parrot and it tears me up inside as well. That place looks wonderful and I'm sure all the residents feel like they have it made now:) Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
9. I have had to buy 2 kinds of pellets for the longest time. I buy Pretty Bird for my grey and conure and I buy Zupreem fruity blend for my eclectus and amazon. When I tried to feed them same thing as my grey, the amazon and eclectus would just let it sit in the bowl all day long so 2 kinds of pellets it was for our household. Now my husband had to feed them for a day or two and when I checked on them. I noticed they had the opposite foods in their bowls. Of course I had to tell him that he got it wrong. LOL, but I'll be darned if they didn't eat all those pellets. So, I tried an experiement and gave all birds half fruity blend and half pretty bird and it seems they are eating both kinds right now. They have actually switched. The eclectus and amazon are preferring the Pretty Bird brand and the Grey and Conure are enjoying more of the fruitblend. Yea!!! I would love to get them on just one kind of pellet. I have noticed they do pick certain colors. At my house they eat the red first and purple is the last to go, but it has not affected their poop at all.
10. It wasn't fun going through it but I bet it would be hilarious to watch. I tested bonkers a few days ago and it didn't go so well. My husband let him out in his room to be out for awhile and I wanted to test his reaction, but me being a little gun shy, I grabbed a towel for protection when I went in the door. It's a good thing I did too cuz he seen me, threw his head down and headed straight for me!!! I held the towel up out in front of me and he pounced right on it and started climbing up it towards my hand. I just let the towel go and quickly stepped back into the hallway. I barely made it through the doorway. Thank goodness I had my handy dandy towel ready. On a good note, he did let me pet his head through the bars today so maybe a little progress is being made. I hope he goes back to normal, I'm really worried that he will stay this way.
11. "the little ones are all over the place in seconds: You got that right Pat:laugh: I think it would be funny to have the tape rolling when Bonkers was out with me. All you would see would be all hands and elbows me trying to get away as I'm running and a crazy little bird on me every step of the way:laugh:
12. Oh he is a cutie. It's amazing what evil little creatures they can become when they are hornmonal. I still have to keep my conure locked in his cage while he is going through this. My ear is just about healed up where he attacked me last week. He's been like this atleast 2 weeks now. Can't wait untill it's over. I keep wondering though ~ What if he never gets back to normal? Is that possible?
13. Congradulations on your new DYH. You are in store for some fun. I have a male that is a little over 2 years old. He is So funny and comical and quite the acrobat. He loves to sing and can repeat any thing we want to teach him to say in about a weeks time. Very high energy but he's a sweetheart. Good luck with your baby.
14. dhorje wrote: I usually take my fids in the shower and in there I can take their wings and pull them to the sides and let the water give them a good soaking under them. I am lucky though because I'm sure there are a lot of greys won't allow that. I have taken them outside in their cages when I was cage cleaning and misted them, too.
15. FYI, they are having a Michael Jackson Marathon on BET channel. Showing ALL his videos.
16. I can't say I was shocked but I was surprised at his death. He was such a frail little man but had an enormous impact all over the world. Whether he was guilty of the accusations or not we will never know. It is always in the back of my mind that he was such an icon, people set out to destroy him for personal gain. That's the world we are in today. I never judged as there is that little voice in my head that tells me that he was an innocent loving person & totally misunderstood. I do think he went somewhat insane after the height of his career. I hope he can find peace now. I had planned to see him if he ever came around to having a concert near me. I am so upset I missed out on one of his concerts. He was one of the greats of our time and probably forever. Isn't it funny how when people are alive we are nasty and mean and then when they pass we remember the good things and make time to be nice? We should be nicer everyday and not wait untill someone passes to pay a few compliments.

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/06/26 22:38
17. OMG! This sounds like an epidemic over there. I heard a month or so ago that the Zupreem was going up in price drastically, now this? What are the poor babies going to do if they don't get their fruitblend? I know how hard it is to try and make them eat something else. I hope you guys find some soon.
18. Duh:blush: I'm so embarrassed. I know all about Jeepers. I remember when you brought him home and all the anticipation waiting on the day you could go get him. I think I was checking in hourly untill he came to you. I had in my mind one of the big blue and golds or something. What was I thinking???? I thought you snuck one in on me.
19. I'm sorry I missed this post when it came up. I give my flock popped popcorn and they love it. I don't know about unpopped kernals but would be hesitant to feed it untill I new for sure. I have also given my bird cooked lentils. I have heard that raw lentils have a toxin in them and are not good for our fids so I stay away from the raw ones. Occassionaly some seed mix has them in there but I pick them out right away. I also give my flock cooked rice. It is another favorite. I do not give it to them uncooked. I am afraid they will swell in their stomach and kill them. I seen on the news a long time a story about how they were banning "throwing rice" at weddings because the wild birds would eat it, it would expand in their stomachs and they died. I'm not taking the chance. I think all 3 things are totally safe if they are cooked.
20. Well, it sounds like it is going around then. Bonkers has always been a little fiesty. He always seemed to know what he wanted and would go for it but he was a sweet little thing. He has his conure attitude but he has never been a biter before. This behavior is totally out of character for him, too. Before the day he "changed" I have always been comfortable saying that he was not a biter. Pat, I'm sorry you are going through this too again. I know how you felt when he went after your face. The day before Bonkers got my ear I was in the room with him and luckily I had a baby/bird toy in my hand. He hovered right over my face for what seemed to be several minutes just squaking at me. I shook the toy at him in front of my face and telling him "you better stop that" I had no idea at that time how much danger I was in:ohmy: If I didn't have the toy in my hand I'm sure my face would have looked like mincemeat. Even when he got my ear, he was almost impossible to get off me. It was scary. He actually bit the little pokey out thing on my ear (like where you put q tips in) I had an open cut on the inside of my ear and the outside. I feel like I really lucked out because it could have been alot worse. And I didn't know you had a mccaw...I must have missed that or have you always had him? Bonkers is still staying in his cage. Attitude does seem a little bit better. My husband lets him out in the mornings after I leave and in the evenings when I am doing something. Hopefully, he will be better soon.

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/06/26 00:07
21. yes, I think it will work out for us just fine and I really hope time passes by quickly. Another thing we have started was covering his cage earlier at night so he is getting much more rest. And Dan, yes, I did want to knock him into next Friday. Don't think it didn't cross my mind. Alot of not so nice things went through my mind. I rarely ever say any cuss words anymore but when he bit my ear they sure flew out of my mouth like I was a drunken sailor:whistle: I remembered exactly how to use them. But after a few hours I calmed down and realized it wasn't his fault. I am wondering if when he gets back to normal if we will have the same relationship as we had before though. I will stay optomistic and hope for the best.
22. Ok, we have made some adjustments with Bonkers now and things are a little better. We have changed his diet to mainly pellets with some seeds and staying clear of the sugars and starches. We will give him some other things if we know it won't upset his hormones anymore. We are keeping him in his cage most of the time but we go sit with him and talk to him and he still is "fussy" at times but I think being in his cage has calmed him down quite a bit. I think he even feels better even though I'm sure he doesn't like being confined to his cage most of the day. My husband does go in and let him out for an hour or two in the evenings so he can get some activity and stretch his wings a bit but I won't go in there while he is out. I do go in there and take the other flock members in for visits though because it has a huge playstand and the den is very bird friendly. So he has his company, too. One of the computers is in the room so he does get lots of attention still. I think this will work untill he gets back to his old self. I think I just might survive this one but I wasn't too sure of that last week:laugh:
23. Pat I totally understand how feel when you see those poor birds being mistreated. It just makes me want to cry and hurt the people that are doing it to them:angry: That is why I have 4 of them myself. I have such a soft spot for them and just want to make their lives better and more comfortable. The playstand looks great and Gizmo does too. He sure has come a long way! He's beautiful.
