1. Baxter was 12 years old when I brought him home last summer. Within a week or two he already had my dogs name down and started calling him "Come ere Jackson Come ere" There were a couple other phrases that he picked up on right away so they can definately pick up new words. 8 Years is not very old in grey age. Baxter can talk and talk quite well but he would rather whistle and make sound effects. Which is fine with me but does bother me some that he can talk but chooses not to most of the time. It will probably be on his terms if he chooses to pick up new words or not but they definately can learn them. Good luck with it. Baxter just says what HE wants to WHEN he wants to:laugh:
2. And Judy, Talon, Casper, Luvparrots, where are your messy face bird photos, hmmm? We want to see. Pictures please:)

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/04/22 21:06
3. Cflanny, Zzero is so cute. Looks like he's biting off more than he can chew:laugh: And Alex looks cute and content too. Sometimes my babies will wear their "left overs" for awhile before they wipe them off:laugh: I love these kind of photos. They are so cute.
4. This was the messiest he or any of my birds ever got and I had to put it in:laugh: . I have/had several with messy faces but this one is the best of mine so far. It's not a contest so we don't have to top anything, just cute messy photos. I know they're out there and I know messes are being made daily:whistle: I think it would be so cute to have all messy faces here to see. I guarantee they will make everyone smile:) So Come on you guys & gals, lets see em.
5. I have heard that each bird is attracted different colors and to find the color they prefer give them toys or wood blocks or something of color and see if there is one color that they are drawn to. Baxter really seems to like yellow. And I too have heard that Home Depot has the "less odor" paint. I was told it was safe for birds but I would never trust that completely. Take all precautions anyway. I once called a toll free phone number for some carpet shampoo to see if it was "bird safe" and the representative first didn't know what I was talking about but still swore it was 100% safe. I did a little more research and found out I could have made my babies very sick or even killed them so don't believe all they tell you. I've heard too that if it's safe for a baby, it will be safe for your parrot and that may be a good thing to keep in mind but there are always exceptions like candles, cleaning agents, teflon pans. Please let us know on the colors you decide and when it's finished you must put pictures in for us to see:)
6. I thought it would be fun to post pictures of our birds with their messiest faces during or after eating and I will give a karma (or 2 or 3:whistle: ) to everyone who posts their messiet bird pictures here. It doesn't have to be just African Greys, all birds are welcome to show their messy faces. If you can't get a messy face, any picture that has to do with food or eating will be great too. This one is of Cooper our DYH amazon. We had chili for dinner and I picked out a helping of the kidney beans. Boy did he enjoy!!! This is his messiest face yet{Nature-00020096} Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/04/22 03:34

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/04/24 23:50
7. Do you know if Sam got to play with toys before you had him? He may not know what they are or what they are for. I too had a "serious" grey named Baxter. He came to us last summer and when was 12 years old. He had no interest in toys either and many of the members told me I had to show him how to play with the toys. In other words you have to play with them in front of him and make them look exciting and fun:woohoo: Then put them in his cage and play with them inside the cage for awhile. Just let him watch you and eventually start including him in the fun. It might feel kind of silly but that's what I did and I did feel silly too:side: :silly: but little by little he did start playing with them. I would catch Baxter playing with the toys when he didn't think I was looking:whistle: . When he seen me he would stop playing like he was embarrassed:blush: or caught but he does play with his toys now. You might have to show him how though. It might take some time but it's worth a try. Baxter loves his toys now.

New Ekkie!

I am so happy for you Mrs. B!!! I know how heartbroken you were when you thought this to be a scam. I can understand her feeling guilty about rehoming and I think it's great she is really looking "long term" for her (ex) ekkie. They are soooo sweet and I think I know of the "Smack" kissy noises you were talking about. Tigger does it, too and my heart just melts when I hear it. I haven't found any good "ekkie" sites unfortunately but I didn't look real hard either:S I just ran across a few sites that gave information out about them but if you do find a good site about them where we can chat please please let me know. I haven't found any sites that top this one and since they have the "other birds" section I don't have any reason to look elsewhere. I would like to find a good site for amazons and ekkies just for fun though. What is your new ekkies name? Also, when I first brought Tigger home he let out some growls that sounded like a huge panther. Don't let that scare you like it did me. I was terrified of him the first 3 days but I think he was just scared himself;) Please keep us posted. I can't wait untill you get him and I've got to see some pictures too. Congradulations again!!!
9. I'm so sorry for you loss.
10. I have an outdoor cage for my flock. They love to be outside and they love the sunshine and wind in their feathers. I've also been working with my grey and taking him out in the harness but he prefers the cage to the harness:( It does sound like Zazu likes the outdoors as well. I am wondering though if you have a harness on him or if he enclosed somehow? If you don't have him in a cage or on a harness he could be gone in a matter of seconds.
11. Char, no problem sharing the stories. I love talking about my "babies" I must admit when we first brought Cooper home I was quite intimidated as he was nothing like my grey. But once he settled and we got used to each other it has been one big party ever since. I'm sure you will love your new zon and have many wonderful and crazy times. Congradulations on your new arrival. It will be tough waiting on her to get ready I bet. funnyfarm, my amazon was 1 1/2 years old when I got him. He was pretty neglected to say the least. It took him atleast a month to open up to us. When we first brought him home the only time he would get halfway vocal was when we ran the vaccuum cleaner or washing machine or something that had a motor sound with it. If something wasn't running or making noise he was silent and I was very concerned about him:dry: but one day he let out this HUGE holler and he hasn't had a quiet day since then:woohoo: . Now he won't shut up:laugh: :silly: :side: . Cooper did take awhile to settle in our house. That's probably how Kazoo is. Just haven't had quite reached her comfort zone but I'm sure it will happen. My grey settled in alot quicker it seemed.
12. I have a dyh amazon. Oh my goodness, is he ever a character. He has a totally different personality than my grey. My grey is pretty mellow and pretty quiet. My amazon (Cooper) is 2 years old. He has a very strong personality and is a total clown. He loves to sing! He knows Old McDonald had a farm (or bird) he says the EIEIO part and he even goes throught the "with a cluck cluck here" and so on. We taught him to sing "Da Da Dah" (like a grand entrance) and La La La La La La La from lower to higher range. He loves American Idol and will outsing all the contestants. We can't hardly hear the contestants because he sings over them:laugh: and when the singers are done and the audience claps Cooper says "Yay!" He picks up words and sentences very fast. I will try and teach him something and by the next week he has it out down. He's a very good talker as well. Whats neat about him is that I can have him on my finger perched and talk to him and say words like "What Ever!" and "Oh My God" and he will say them with me at the same time or repeat them back to me. We actually have converstations:laugh: . And the thing that cracks me up is that he will laugh hysterially, like side splitting laughter and will say things while he's laughing like "Oh My God" and "Oh Wow" He is not a screamer but he can get pretty loud with his singing and laughing. By the way, he loves Opera and will sing his heart out to it. He does demand a lot of attention. He just loves to be around people all the time and if he feels ignored he will get off his cage and come find us. He needs to be doing something all the time! He is very friendly but he does not like his back petted. I've heard it's an amazon thing. They're not a "touchy" bird but loves to step up any time. He tells us good morning and goodnight (at the appropriate times) He's a pretty good bird. He reminds me of a 4 year old that wants to play with all his toys at once but doesn't know which one to get. He also cries exactly like a baby. I mean you can't tell the difference at all. If you are getting an dyh be prepared to be entertained all day long!!! {Characters-0002005C} So when are you getting your dyh. Please tell me more about him.

Post edited by: BaxtersMom, at: 2009/04/18 15:25
13. Just read the recipe again....they need to bake for 5 hours? Just wanted to check and make sure. It sounds like a long time so thought I would ask but if it's 5 hours, then 5 hours it will be:silly:
14. Go ahead and put it in the recipes part, too. It's still a new post worth checking into so I will leave it for the moment but please add it in the recipes/cookbook. Judy is right, it does look very interesting. I give it a blue ribbon just by it's looks alone:)
15. Well, it all sounds like a GO then:) I didn't mean to put a damper on things but figured I'd throw it out there cuz I didn't know the answer but I always try and think in advance. Looks like there was overwhelming response saying they will be fine. That's great news. Now I am jealous. It would be such a joy to have 2 babies at once. How long till they come home?
16. Penny, congradulations to you, too. Yep, I'm learning the anatomy and physiology of the body. I feel like I am studying to be a doctor or something. I should get paid alot of money for learning the things I am learning:laugh: I was also thinking of building off of massage therapist and maybe later taking the personal trainers courses... Then I could train the clients, tear their muscles up and then massage the pain away;) I could double my money with one cliet:P Who knows where it will lead though. I still think I am leaning towards the medical part of it. But there are so many opportunities for me to build off of now. If I can just make it the next 6 or 7 months:blink:
17. Worship the pellets and seeds she walks on. That's a good one:laugh:
18. I've been going to school for 2 1/2 weeks now. They are really cramming my head full of stuff. Lots of big big words too:blink: My head is spinning but I am doing it. We've take alot of tests, too. We've already taken 6 of them:angry: There are always bonus questions too. So far my grades have been 95, 105, 100, 100, 115 and most recent was a 60:ohmy: . I knew that last one was gonna be a doozy. That last was totally unacceptable to me and can't let that happen again but overall I think I am doing real good. It is fun and I am really enjoying it alot!
19. Just wanted to add my support Carol. I think it would be twice the blessings to get them both and it sounds like in your heart you already have:) Of course they will get along great since they are clutch mates but the only questions to bring up. If they came together would they bond more with each other than with you or another human and be more dependant on each other than you? And since they are male and female....would they eventually breed after they matured? I have no idea of what the answers to that is but you might want to consider that too. If kept in separate cages they probably wouldn't. Anyway, I know you have enough love in you to have a few birds and I have 4 myself and do think it's better to have more than one. Wonder if anyone else has gotten siblings at the same time. Let us know how it goes.
20. I agree with Judy, I bet he sensed that you were "under the weather" and wanted to make you feel better. They are so in tune with our feelings. He obviously loves you very much. Great job!!! Hope you have a speedy recovery too. I wish Baxter would fly to me like that. I'm jealous.
21. I'm with Judy on this one....let us know whats in it so we can make it too....and put it in the recipe/cookbook post so we can have easy access to it? Let us know how the girls like it:)
22. Mrs B, that looks scrumptious....you should put it in our recipe/cookbook post so more people can see it. I love that you put pics in. This is one I'd like to try on my flock{Nature-00020096}.
23. Hello MrsB and Mesa, so glad you joined. Can't wait to hear about you and Mesa.
