I know this is an old thread, I just thought I'd use it to ask what you all feed your grey's? Alfie is getting incredably fussy - the veggie mash she used to wolf down like she'd never been fed doesn't hold as much appeal for her now. I've tried steaming it it for more of a crunch, but the dogs get that instantly! I've tried some of the recipes I found on the recipe thread - and she loves the scrambled egg, but of course she can only have that now and again. Her morning fruit, which also used to get eaten with relish is also now being hoyed to the dogs. I think her appatite is ok, because she is trying to steal alsorts of stuff that is no good for her - buttery toast, milky cereal....pizza!!Just turning her beak up at the stuff I need her to eat! Help please??!! x

Good luck Mills. I can't offer any advice as I'm a relatively new grey owner, I do know though that patience will pay off and more than likely give you a wonderful pair of birds.

Thanks folks! And thank you Miss Beanz for the Karma! x

Gaby sounds like a real sweetie. The bit about her petting her head with her toy is so sad though - hopefully she will come to realise soon that she now has a human to do that for her! You say you need to have her wings clipped. Is there any particular reason for this? Only some of our members here have fully flighted birds and it's really amazing to hear of the joy for all concerned when these birds take flight! A table top perch is a good idea - somewhere she can call hers when she's not in her cage. Well done you for taking on this lovely grey. It may take a while, and it may not be easy, but you will be rewarded with a beautiful, funny, loving companion.

Cute! I like the bottom one - it looks like a secret is being shared! Thanks for posting.

Hehe - she means it doesn't she? She's lovely Janet. Thanks for sharing.

You're so lucky! i've been trying to convert Alfie for almost a year!! She will munch through the birdie bread, but only to find the goodies I baked in it!! Well done with the Harrisons!

What a scare for you. I'm afraid I have to put my hand up too and admit to Alfie being in the kitchen sometimes while I cook. I hope Rikki is ok and the only lasting affect this has on her is to keep her away from pans! (Although I don't imagine she will get the chance!) Don't be too hard on yourself - accidents are just that. x

Sorry to hear you gave your baby away after only a couple of weeks - I hope he hadn't settled in too much with you before he moved!

Hi, We are in the Borders and got Alfie down in Bedlington - not too far away. http://www.parrotcare.com/index.html I have heard of a breeder in Edinburgh though who is well spoken of - doesn't advertise and only uses word of mouth. Perhaps if you get in touch with the Dick vet in Edinburgh they would be able to put you in touch with them, or another good breeder? Sorry to hear of your daughters loss.

Post edited by: pearllyn, at: 2010/01/03 21:54

Sure do hope you find great homes Dave - after watching them grow, I would be soooo tempted if I was closer - or even on the right continent!! Good luck with finding their forever homes.
-
I know you've seen them before, but this was a festivey shot of the girls. Besides - this is a good thread that needed bringing to life again!

Bernie, if the lake stays frozen......how big is your bath tub?
-
Can't recall if we've already shared this one or not, so here we go.

Sorry to hear this little lad has had such a rough time. I really hope he finds some peace soon. Don't give up on him.

Awww! I didn't know it was a competition - I would have cleaned mine up a little and removed the pesky little things such as African Greys and the like!! i'm very competitive!!
-
I do tend to feed more fresh, but keep a supply of frozen if time is short. Basically, if she's happy to eat it, I'm happy to give it!! I feel happier if it's fresh, and she does seem to eat it a little better.

That cat and too is amazing right enough Jill! It never fails to amaze me how two seperate species can interact with each other. That ringneck was way too cool and so was the eclectus! Some things for Alfie to work on!!!!!
-
Hmm - too many to mention also, but I think my overall favourite that I could sit down and watch anytime is Calamity Jane - always wanted to play the part but the closest I've come is Katie Brown!! Seen all these others too (apart from August Rush - now on my list!) and I love Scent of a woman, silvery moon, and right turn Clyde!!
-
That is very interesting - we often think Alfie has a "falcon" look about her, sometimes just by the way she's sitting, or will swoop in! Pterodactyls? Maybe!!
-
So sorry to hear your bird is going through this - hope he's feeling better soon.

I do enjoy this thread - I've caught up a lot today! I know I should think about Alfies future without us but it's just to depressing at the moment. I feel the same way about the way we have raised Alfie not being the same as most people could manage - we are home a lot and when we are, she is out with us. Finding someone to take over when we are not here just seems a daunting task! (you know how no-one can look after your bird as well as you can!!) There is a bloke who lives in the town who has had a grey for around 15 years I think, and he was interested in Alf when we got her. In conversation I discovered he is a heavy smoker and his bird is exposed to that, he is a heavy drinker and the bird shares that, and owing to the fact that the bird is afraid of toys (!!!!!!!!) she lives in a bare cage. Now I realise this isn't every bird owner and that this is the opposite extreme of how we look after Alf, but finding acceptable middle ground sure does seem like a task and a half, and if David and I were to dissapear tomorrow, there is no-one I know at the minute who I would trust with the job. Hopefully as Talon says, when we find the right person, we'll know it. (I'll sign them up instantly!!) Great posts Dan - keep 'em coming!

I would be too afraid to try free flying, although I would love for Alfie to be able to. I think a large secure barn or the like would be good fun for her though. We have a secure lock up which is 1000 square feet and she has fun in there, although doesn't really fly around much - just sits and watches whatever we're doing from the top of the horse trailer! But she does fly down to us periodically just to make sure we're still there!

Lol - "what's the deal with the chickens?" Funny Dan! Renate - loved the words in flight vid - lovely! And Bernie, that man with the guitar would be excellent on Who wants to be a millionair - Fastest finger first!! Hehe!
