k ill have to do the conversion with that weight haha we use grams here. I actually live in Ontario canada about 2 hrs from the border to niagara falls NY. My birds eats the Hagen lifetime pellets, then just about everything else my grey is 10x fussier than Tiago for eating and trying new foods. I give them also the Hagen fruit and nut mix daily as well. Ti answer your otehr question i clip both of my birds because i just not willing to try and test them outdoors. I can get a harness on Zuri but never on Tiago unless i force him to wear it. I am just waiting for him to finish his molt than its trim time. I find that tiago is a VERY good flyer that tail spreads open and just glides. So im sure they'll live longer this way.
-
Well mine is 2 and a half now just got his male colourings in his last molt it happened so fast well the colour change that is in 2 weeks he had 90% of the pink and black. I was soo hoping he was male when i bought him it was a 60/40 chance seeing as i didnt do a dna test on him went on the fact he had a small ring started when he was a baby. Well Tiago is night and day different than my grey. They dontlike each other really ive only had them together once and it looked like trouble so i spread them apart. Zuri my TAG is very interested but tiago isnt..haha. Your right they arent the most touchable i can manhandle zuri but just lightly pet Tiago, talking well zuri has an edge there too but tiago is a great talker too. They are both very spoiled and Tiago is a huuuge wood chewer geeze i have to buy the wood and make my own toys and he is still going through about a 2" x3" x 6' long worth of pine wood a week that i cut up tried poplar and he can do it but he gets mad when he has trouble destroying it. Zuri has to be very soft wood or he loses his patience quickly. Energy level Tiago is content preening himself on me peacfully and just enjoys it zuri cant stand still drives me crazy and theres only a year difference in age. I find my alex is more needy though which is strange because they are known to be more independent birds. and has to be around me or in eye sight or wont be quiet. a question i have for you is what does your alex weigh? no vet gives me a concrete weight. does yours eat alot mine seems to preen tons not pluck just very vain bird whereas zuri eats alll the time..

At 2 birds im at my limit and everyone is different i work night shift so im around all day with them so i can give them the time. But id love to have a huge flock and no bird truly scares me except for a macaw i didnt know. The late Steve Irwin the crocodile hunter once admitted one of the very few animals he feared was a large parrots.

I own 2 birds well they own me im sure they'd tell you all but its hard to find people that have alexandrines. My little one Tiago is 2 and a half years old and just got his male colourings ive been waiting for this since the day i brought him home. I actually cared more about this than his talking, which they are great talkers as well. I'll share a picture of Tiago. but im wondering how many people own them and what they think of them especially if you own a grey like i do as well, how yours differ?
-
I own an alexandrine as well. His name is Tiago and he is 2yrs and a half old and just got his male colours. How old is yours? Its hard to find people that have them as most people want macaws and greys well got one too so i cant talk much haha.

Taking greys outdoors...is the breeze a problem?
zooman replied to matt314159's topic in The GREY Lounge
i agree they are birds and still are very close to that level in the nature. I take zuri out witha avaitor harness and he's clipped too so i dont worry and i live in Canada and yes we are quite warm now but after sept he'll have to manage with looking at the outdoors. -
very interesting my grey doesnt have the patience for looking at magazines just tearing them up..lol. As for tv. I once was watching a nature show and his stand is near the tv and i have a large plasma and it was about birds and he listens intently on the noises and this one scene it was these birds taking off in flight and scared the crap out of him and it seemed like he thought they were flying at him and he duck for cover. I had to laugh them reassure him he was fine..
-
Zuri loves anything with paper..haha. and his bells that he feels the need to ring louder when im trying to watch tv and not paying attention to him. IM pretty lucky the commercial toys hes never gone for he loves the homemade stuff like paper towel rolls with treats inside, birdy bagels, not much of a wood chewer for sure.

Hey.Single African grey free to any good home
zooman replied to cobimoore's topic in The GREY Lounge
wow! I had a virus on my computer and ive been away for a week and just saw this. Geeze scammers are everywhere. Even in this. I tell you i shouldnt be suprised anymore with people letting each other down but it still makes me shake my head. Im glad no one fell for that either and agree that should be left to show the ignorance and spineless nature of some people. Isnt there some how you can block that user so they cant write anymore garbage? Do they have no possible way to get a real job? They'd only wished they could afford an amazing creature like our birds. -
I truly believe its up to the upbringing and your household for whats best for an apartment. Sure use the lists as a guideline but ive seen very loud tiels and budgies seem to make noise alll the time atleast in y experience. I have a TAG and an alexandrine and both were listed as noisy and i have an apartment which is very quiet building. yes the Alexandrine Tuago makes one annoying squak about 3-5 times a day but most of the time its just talking and lighter whistling.
-
wow that is an adventure. Makes you really treasure your pets when i read that. Im really suprised the owners left them soo easily. I wasnt in their spot but at this moment i couldnt leave my boys behind.
-
Well not exactly sure but Zuri is a TAG and when i began visiting him he was 6 months old and he had hello and the phone ring at the store down and began talking right away when he got settled when i brought him home so im guessing around then.

I too was like wow nice stand and also that could tip over no? I built one for my TAG Zuri and something about the PVC he hates still no,luck in him using it. It was my first with plastic everythign else is wood so maybe thats it. But if your greys love it well thats all that matters. Good work witht eh love bird one too it looks like alot of fun for them

A quick note though about your situation first. You being home all the time now and when school starts that means you away all day..From all the research ive read they say not to do that im not sure how long you've had him but keep that in mind. The treats is a good start they do switch back and forth with favs if given the chance eg. you going back to work your bf will have a good chance to sneak in there as a new fav. I know my gf took many many months of bites and growls etc. and ive had him just over a year and he still prefers me when im around but allows her to pick him up etc now whereas before shed get a bite for her effort. she did it with no fear mentality and treats and spmetimes just hey birdy you got no one else here now you have to step up!!
-
The best way to get him to talk is talking to him. and theres never a guarantee that any bird will talk even a AG buthe is young still and many people say the same thing. Theres days when Zuri my TAG wont say much and others hes a chatterbox its their mood. Be patient he obviously knows how maybe hes just working the kinks out.

Is Gray Nervous, Scared or have a bad habit?
zooman replied to BaxtersMom's topic in The GREY Lounge
hmm is right could be a habit like trustdace said or not getting enough rest and grumpy. Birds have their own personalities that is a strange thing though. Was he always covered at bedtime? maybe the cover startles him and thats why..? -
they do look very nice actually and the price is pretty good..I bought my first cage from petcetera it was cheaper but it showed when i put it together..but it works and has lasted so cheaper doesnt always mean crap just little things. The corner one would give you both more space. Ive heard the play tops can be hard to get a bird off if your a shorter person if the step up command isnt perfect. a thing to consider

Im glad some of you have found this store that Sevi wrote about, and im sorry if i was sounding mean i just wanted everyone to know how not to be soo scared from buying from big chains and I would love to have a store like superpet did atleast the one that i frequented. I did see a glimpse of what you talked about at the other location in Kitchener when it was open truth be told when i had reserved Tiago my Alexandrine it was at that location he/she was very young and needed a lot of time to wean. So i began to visit and saw the water being filthy and the deal breaker was i saw my bird covered in food and her telling me he struggled to eat and he ended up wearing it and they left him looking filthy. The next day i went to the cambridge location and saw another alex and how it was night and day difference in their attitudes and asked if i could just transfer my purchase to one of theirs after deliberation they agreed and i made a very wise choice and soo happy with tiago hes amazing. So i know what you mean i just didnt want people to think badly of the company as a whole because the group at the cambridge location were so great and both my birds are so well socialized and healthy...As you mentioned exotic wings i didnt want to bring it up since they are trying to make a living as well but they have a terrible set-up that is the store i left without buying anything. I drove pretty far out too. I just couldnt like i said the tiels were in rubbermaid boxes stacked 10 high. I saw overpacker cages with birds that were almost bald from plucking, a oh soo cute senegal in rough shape common sense would tell me because on one side were the very noisy tiels and the other 2 huge macaws that were also in too small of cages but hovered over the senegal because the cages were soo much higer and i mean that has to effect his happiness. then the store had a bird hotel to leave your birds while on vacation but it was a hallway jammed with birds imagine the chances of passing disease like that no air flow, the rest of the store was dusty and very overcrowded. the prices were fair but at what cost? I asked to go see the nursery just to see the baby birds and i wasnt rude just asked since you cant see them from the door, the girl said "they look the same" when i mentioned that i had a grey and alex...but in a rude tone. dont you all like seeing babies? but im sorry for ranting it just opened my eyes to how different if i had the chance to do it how i wouldnt do it. I soo would love to see those parrots that they used to have at superpet knowing i still coulnt afford them like seeing hawk headed parrot what a sight or a beautiful macaw..i miss those weekend trips. Hopefully soon i can experience that everyday.

Im glad you found a amazing store for your needs i live in the Kitchener area and driving to mississauga at our gas prices is not an easy choice. I see a huge market in my area for this type of store. I bought mine at the Cambridge location and i visited my birds at different times and never saw what you explained and im sure every location was different. I dealt with a very nice lady named Rose she was older and so great with the birds. I have no qualms about that stores way they treated their pets. I dont think they went "under" ive read and talked to other employees and they were bought out from petsmart. If im ever out that way ill have to check out that store.

I agree i tend to let natural daylight time do the work for me when its dark out and im home which now in summer is never i work nights i put them to bed in their cages and they go to sleep and awke naturally. In winter i keep them up a bit later seeing as it gets dark at like 4pm for a short time. They do need lots of sleep but in the wild they dont get a whole lot of undisturbed sleep if you really think about it so in my opinion the amounts i read about are pretty exhaggerated

in my experience kids+parrots havent mixed well..the otehr comments are true greys do bond quickly but can learn to accept others as well on a lower level. but heres a tip that ive learned maybe you have tried this is that if your taller or your hand is higher than your daughters your grey instincts is to be on the highest person. And i agree the hand hovering over the grey is a definite no no that puts him on edge right away and i agree they can smell the fear almost like dogs.

You should be proud you have such an engaged bird, even though a vorw doesnt make the most appealing sound. I had the same problem with my Alexandrine with a blue jay, zuri the TAG replicates more my sounds than calls of the wild..but yeah sometimes early in the morning they can be urghhh indoor voice would ya!! but the other comment is soo right if you encourage them by saying like what i did a few times, "be quiet" well after that it was the annoying sound and a quick "be quiet" from him right after...

Hey everyone; I have always thought of opening my own pet store and specializing in birds. It became more clearer to me as many of you live in Canada and know what has happened but ill explain to those of you that live in the U.S.A. There were these fantastic stores called Superpet and they had an amazing selection of birds and expansive area for their needs from A to Z. Until last year they were for many people around my area the only place to by supplies and the place where I bought both of my birds my TAG and my Alexandrine. The stores has wonderful staff who brought up these baby birds and weaned them perfectly. I was totally pleased on how they treated their birds and would be an example on how to do business. They were a full line store catering to every type of pet owner but my weakness was the bird section. Unfortunately Petsmart thought of the chain of stores as a threat and bought all of them and took away all of the birds minus budgies and tiels into 4 small cages and made their bird rooms a dog training centre. It was depressing and laid off or whatever all the amazing staff there used to be. Since then i have struggled to find a store that caters to bird since petsmarts area for birds is a disgrace, atleast in my area. I know U.S. is full of stores that cater to birds but there is only one store and the staff there are rude and treat their birds with little respect when i saw tiels babies in plastic rubbermaid bins stacked on top of each other I left without buying a thing and wont be back. I am left with making my own toys which worked out i suppose and buying whatever else through online shopping. I hope to open up my own bird only store in the next couple years the wheels have begun and I have one question when the time would come would any of you complete a survey for me so i know what you all would want in a bird only store and where do you get the majority of your bird supplies?

I have to say it is a process for suuuure. My alexandrine was much easier just say the words and he goes and before i get him out of his cage. Now Zuri my TAG wellll im on his time apparently, he's slowly getting it but both of them do poop if startled or if they are on me and i bend down etc. Thats the one detail i havent been able to control.
