  1. Misty is eleven. Born March 6 2002 according to a card his former keeper had from the pet shop. I adopted him in july 2004. We have been through a few changes together but he is a constant in my life and although he sometimes drives me mad I would never willingly be without him. Steve n Misty
  2. As a rule Greys are not screamers. We need to know a lot more about your bird and it's living conditions. Is he left alone often? Do people shout at him (her) ? They do not scream for no reason but sometimes they can be upset by something that seems quite innocuous to you, but as I have said we need to know as much about your circumstances as you can tell us if we are to have any hope of giving you useful advice. Steve n Misty
  3. As BaileysPapa has said it is a quick and easy injection. Misty has had it done twice as the first failed. This very rarely happens. The vet said that the first one may have been put to close to the surface of the skin and came out during a routine preen. Misty was not at all troubled by the operations and he paid no attention to the place where the chip was inserted. It is well worth doing for the security of your parrots. Steve n Misty
  4. Just a reminder to all who keep a parrot especially Greys as it can be difficult to prove identity just by description. If it has a closed ring or any ring for that matter note all the numbers and markings on it. Photograph any unusual markings and the beak and feet and eyes in close up. As some unscrupulous people are not beyond removing rings from found or stolen birds get you bird microchipped. If you bird is chipped verify the chip each time you visit the vet for a checkup. They can fail. It has happened to my chipped Grey. I frequently read of lost birds on other sites where the keeper has neglected these simple precautions. Do it even if your bird is clipped and you think it can't fly away. Some may surprise you and some get stolen. Do all these things as soon as you adopt your bird. A chip or ring will not guarantee you will get your lost bird back but it will immensely improve your chances. I have also posted this in the welcome room. Steve n Misty

  6. What a lovely smart girl Emma is. Steve n Misty
  7. Dear Chezron I am sorry to read what has happened. You must feel terribly betrayed but your birds will help you through. I think those two treacherous rat bags deserve each other. If you have your birds you have the best part of the deal by far. Mistyparrot has seen me through some really dark times and I am sure yours will see you through as well. Steve n Misty
  8. I have never had Misty tested but I was told he was a boy when I got him nine years ago and nothing he has done or said since gives me reason to doubt it. When I had Misty micro chipped about four years ago the vet thought he might be a girl but that was just by looking not testing. I am content with the idea of Misty being male and I have no reason to get him tested. To me he is Misty Parrot and he is who he is. If an egg mysteriously appears one day I will begin to refer to Misty as a "she" but until then...... Steve n Misty
  9. What a relief! As every boy knows, boys are best. Steve N Misty (A boy)
  10. I don't think birds hide their illness from their flock but from potential predators. Predators will target weaker looking birds. So a sick bird will not want to risk attracting danger to their flock. On the other hand the flock will rally to the defence of any flock member. Your Dayo loves you and will never willingly desert you. I am sure she will help you through your fight however she can. Love from Steve n Mistyparrot.
  11. Her description of the pet shop assistant catching Alex in a net and then trimming his beak claws and wings put a chill in my heart! I think it is true to say that wild Greys to not pluck. Plucking comes about as a result of living in captivity but as you say it can be a very hard habit to break. Steve n Misty
  12. I found this during one of my Youtube trawls. I have not seen this particular video referenced here so I am offering it for your comments. There is an addendum at the end that must particularly troubling for Americans. Steve n Misty
  13. Can I try some of what you are on Dave ? Steve n Misty (just me not Misty! )
  14. That light is much much too close. You could cause serious harm to her eyes. Because it is irritating her she may be trying to get it away from her territory. Were there no instructions with the light explaining how to place it? Steve n Misty
  15. Maybe Dayo has adopted Dans voice because he can see that Dan is special to Kim so he figures "If I can fool Kim into thinking I am Dan she will get rid of that useless lump and I will be the boss instead!";) Steve n Misty
  16. Here is a pic of Misty looking at the local wildlife in my back yard in Brighton England. He is looking at one of the squirrels that come to raid the bird feeders. Steve n Misty
  17. Thank you for adopting this poor little chap. I am sure you will never regret it. Good luck with the bad language. Usually just ignoring it works well. Steve n Misty
  18. I don't think boy Greys are bothered with having girls names. My Misty is a boy and people often refer to Misty as "She" but he knows who and what he is so he is not bothered Steve n Misty
  19. He obviously wants to water the flowers with you Steve n Misty
  20. I am the boss in my house. Honest! Steve n Misty
  21. It may comfort you to know that when I had Misty micro chipped a couple of years ago there was no drama at all. In fact He had to have it done twice because the first chip failed. The vet told me that the first one may have been to close to the skin so it got scratched out. But in both cases putting the chip in did not bother Misty at all although other than beak rubs and neck scritches he does not like any part of his body touched. I the vet discovered that the first chip had failed or disappeared during a general precautionary check up. Steve n Misty
  22. I would never have left it behind! I often see ornamental parrots in junk shops but they are always Macaws or other gaudy birds but never Greys. Steve n Misty
  23. I think frozen veg is well cleaned before freezing so it should be OK. In some ways they can be better than fresh veg. Some fresh veg can lose vitamins within hours of picking. Fast freezing preserves these. Obviously the best is freshly picked organic. Misty loves still frozen peas and green beans as an occasional treat on a hot day. Steve n Misty
  24. Ahh yes reminds me of a Donovan song in the late 1960s' "Mellow Yellow". There was a rumour, I assume a hoax that banana skins could be dried and smoked with, shall we say, "interesting" results! I know Misty thinks he can fly but I don't think bananas have much to do with that. Steve n Misty
  25. Misty has always enjoyed a nice banana, Especially if he can eat it sitting on my knee and squash it into my jeans! But his preference has changed. He is not interested in the fruit inside. He now prefers only the skin. In fact he he seems to adore it! Fortunately he is happy to eat it on my desk top rather than my knee and will chew the whole banana skin into a black mush. I think he even eats some of it! My question is I have read other people advise peeling the banana before giving it. Suggesting perhaps there is something in the skin to be aware of. I wash the fruit first but does anyone know if there is an inherent problem with banana skin ? Steve n Misty
