Hello Dbhelix, I think we all understand what you are saying . The original post was not To give or not to give salt . The post was why is salt bad for birds .You are correct that salt is not bad , they do excrete small amounts of salt in their diet. That is speaking of healthy amounts of salt in their diet. Salt is dangerous to anyone and anything in high amounts. If there is an overload of salt in the kidney , then the parrot will be in high risk for kidney damage .There is salt in everything , especially water .So yes it is OK to give a chip once in a while , but never in excess. It would not be safe to say that salt is OK , due to the fact that some people would have no limitations .How would one know the limit for their bird ?Anything that would harm them in high levels should have a warning label on it , don't you think ? It is our role as caretakers to monitor their wellbeing . Thank you for the post , however who is the author of the artical on salt ? Is this person a respected diatician for parrots who is backed by an avian vet ? Sorry I have questions , not doubting , just curious. Dave , thank you , however I knew that . I agree , as I had posted also Salt isnt excreted by birds . Why would one want to give salty food to a parrot anyway ? Sure they like it , it's like having a two year old . You don't give them things that would harm them . It doesnt take science to understand, just good common sense. We are much larger than a parrot , so I apologize but I don't see the connection comparing amounts of salt given to a human and a parrot. The point being they do not excrete salt , should be enough . Kind Regards , Mary

I don't think NO Name is ever going to get a name ...How old is he/she now ?I still like Corbin/Corbyn or Cory .... Mary

Dave, I agree with the post you wrote , I dont give Sammy bacon , I have only done this bad thing twice and never will again .Thanks for doing such a good job helping all of us , we appreciate it. Mary

B, If I dropped Sammy in the bathtub with water he would freak out . What did Elmo do the first time you did this ? How do you get him out and how often per week do you do this ?Sorry about all the questions.... Mary

Well , they can't excret salt , that sounds pretty technical to me . If I ate salt and my body couldnt get rid of it , that would be good enough for me .I can't wait to see what Dan or Dave have to offer . This will be good.Besides why would you want to give them something they don't get in the wild ? Mary

Judy , this is confusing , which Mary are you talking to????? That's OK Prrthead, it gets confusing sometimes...As you can see..Judy does a great job , she has her hands full with all of us , she's great. LOL...Mary Mary H,was my maiden initial . How funny...

Ollyo, I would like to read that artical . Sammy has only had the tinest piece of bacon a couple of times.I would never do anything like that on a regular basis .We only have bacon once or twice a year in the house, usually at Christmas or vacation. Mary

Hi JC, You are not doing anything wrong.....BoBo along with other Greys just like to be dirty boys .LOL..My Sammy age 3 doesnt like them either .I spray him everyday in his cage with a gentle spray of water , knowing full well I am not reaching the skin as needed....But we keep trying .The home Sammy came from did not give him baths, she said he didnt like them ...DUH...One day I took him outside in his cage and used the mist on my sprayer and soaked him, he seemed to like it , I don't get much of a fuss outside . However this won't work in the winter. My first Grey had never had baths and it took about 7 months to get him used to it , so don't give up .Pick one method and stick to it , is all I can suggest.Sooner or later , he will give in . Kind Regards, Mary

Dan , which light do you recomend? I want to make sure I have the correct one myself. Mine is an Avian .....This is a topic where there is tons of misleading information and if one isnt careful , they can really mess up their birds eyes. Mary

Post edited by: bettyboop, at: 2008/06/17 21:15

THANK YOU DAN !!!!I was really hoping someone with the correct knowledge would chime in on this . I knew the UV wasnt correct , but led them to a link . Mary

WWW.PARROTPARROT.COM has an alert on toxins for your parrot.Congrats on the new bird. Mary

Sammy loves bacon also , he can smell it cooking and start begging .It's awful , to have to sneak around to eat food so the bird can't steal it . He says APPLE , 50 times per day , thats his true love . Mary

The bulbs need to be Avian bulbs , not reptile or regular light bulbs . This is really something to check into , one person was talking about using the wrong type of bulb(light) and it burnt the birds eye.So there are requirements on types of bulbs and how far above the cage they need to be .Judy provided a link to visit for information . Greys normally have warm up to anything that is new .Toys , playstands etc.. When I first bought a playstand for our first Grey , it took him 3 months before he would go near it .The Grey I have now , it took him 6 days.So every bird is different . Why don't you make every effort to bond with this bird . Sit and read to him and just get to know each other . My birds love it when I bring out the childrens story books , they come very close and sometimes on me when I am reading . Also try placing his cage closer to the family room , like the others said , you can protect the rug with towels or paper . Greys are social , they like to be near the family . If he is given love , attention , and worked with slowly , he will come around .Remember to move slow , and offer new toys slowly .Allow him to see you playing with the toys and having fun with them . Hello , just wondering how Echo is doing ? Mary

WAY TO GO TYCO !!!!!!!Congratulations Pat , you deserve this break through . Isn't it an awesome day , when they finally trust us ? I am so happy for both of you ... Mary

I use full spectrum lights . We purchased the standing fixture from FOSTERANDSMITH.COM .I use a stool that elevates it over the cage .My birds love it . Mary

Pat, you poor thing . I know you are frustrated , I feel bad for you . I think what Dan said about the wings being cut so short that there is not enough support for the feathers.I think I would talk to my vet and ask if there is something to give to encourage stronger feather growth. As far as breaking one , maybe the vet would have a suggestion .Perhaps Tyco needs to be kept off the playtop and not allowed to be there if it is so destructive on the feathers .Perhaps a wooden playstand to just sit on top would help ,if it isnt a dome top . One of our cages is flat and we just sit a wooden Playstand on top somethimes. You have to do whatever it takes to protect Tyco . Good luck , I will be thinking about you and Tyco. You can purchase this at any pet store that carries bird supplies .Also white vinegar will remove most if worked on quickly. Mary

I agree , he needs time out of his cage , and it looks as though he would really be happy to have some fresh new toys. Mary

Post edited by: bettyboop, at: 2008/06/15 22:05
