Hi Lovelylew I did not order a training program but I am working with Jenna with a clicker. birdclick.com has a LOT of helpful ideas. Results are mixed so far, and it is entirely my fault. Jenna learned targeting within the first 2 days; but we've had trouble moving on from that. The retrieve has been difficult for us. I got some good suggestions from the folks at birdclick.com and we're trying to move on with a "retrieve." We'll see how it goes! Training is a bit disrupted right now because of some renovations in "her" room - a friend built me some great book cases and is ripping up the carpet and replacing it for me over the next few days. Jenna likes him so she does not mind the activity too much, and she'll be out of the room when he does anything involving dust or fumes :-) But the disruption may make training difficult to follow through with for a few days

That will definitely be interesting! The breeder I got my CAG from described definite differences between Timneh's and CAG's; it will be interesting to see if you agree!

Well of COURSE you are spoiling your baby, why else would you HAVE her? ~grins widely~ Welcome to the family Keywe!

Hi Kim!!! Congratulations on your new grey, life is SO much better with a grey in it!!! How much uninterrupted sleep does your bird get? How old is your bird? Do you know if she naps during the day? Generally they do if it gets quiet. If your bird is in a place where there is activity and noise and light after her "bed time" it might not be a bad idea to let her sleep in a smaller cage in a quiet room instead. I'll defer to more experienced grey folks on that one! I don't use a cage cover for Jenna at all, but she is in a quiet corner in the living room, and I turn out all the lights in that room between 9 and 10 every night. (I'm up later, but usually in my own bedroom) Jenna usually gets about 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep, and I trust that her daytime naps help take care of the rest of her sleeping needs - at least so far that seems to be working ok! But I'm new at this, too ~smiles~ Now I would not want you to think Jenna is the center of the universe or anything . . . but before bed she gets warm oatmeal, fed from a spoon, and then I sing her a lullabye before turning off the lights . . .

What a sweet baby!!! I am so excited for you ~beams~ My little one has been home for a month now and she is just GRAND . . . you are in for so much fun!!!!!!

It is wonderful that Tobie likes the pellets so much. That will help her stay healthier ~smiles~ My post about the baby food was a little late, I wrote it in response to one of yours saying that Tobie was not eating, I am SO glad she is doing better! Tobie is your lesson in not taking ANYTHING for granted, isn't she? I pray that you have her around for a very long and happy time to come. Hugs and comfort . . .

Hi Naz I have a 5 month old CAG who loves to fly and land on my head, which I do NOT like as much as she does! Hehe We're working on it. I put my hand or arm over my head when I hear her wings start to flap, and when she does manage to land on my head I take her off and put her on her cage or her play stand. I'll go sit near her so she feels comfortable, she really seems to like me to be nearby all the time when I am home. I hope she'll eventually stop landing on my head! My little one, like yours, does not like being petted or handled too much, either. She used to let the breeder handle her, so I am hoping that eventually she will let me touch her more, too. Good luck with your new little one!

I am so glad Bobby is doing better!!!

Oh Pat, how scarey, you and Tobie are in my thoughts and prayers

Pat, have you tried warm baby food in a syringe? Was Tobie hand fed?

It really IS hard to find the right name, isn't it? I had a list of names picked out when I went to see my baby, I was not sure which one I liked best. Jenna was NOT at the top of the list, although it was obviously ON the list. But it is the name SHE liked best, she chirped and looked at me when I tried it out on her, so she got to choose her own name!

Oh, how exciting, Claire!!!! Girls RULE! ~nods knowingly~

Welcome, Naz, and congrats on your new baby grey! My Jenna is the same age. My first thought in reading your post about Honey is that she is still scared of her new home and new person. Our babies have no idea how excitedly we awaited them, how eager we were to have them come home, and how much we love them. They just know that they are no longer in the only home they knew, and they are with strangers. And greys are very sensitive birds, more than many others. It can sometimes take a while for them to get comfortable. I've been lucky in some ways with Jenna; she was extremely well socialized by the breeder, and I got to visit her once a week for a couple of months, so she at least knew who I was when she came home with me. But she still won't let me handle her like the breeder could. I wish she would, but maybe that will come with time. So I would advise patience, calmness, and consistency with Honey. Sit and read a book near her cage and talk to her from time to time; listen to music together; talk to her a LOT and tell her what you are doing and what is going to happen around her. Slip treats into her food dish while she is watching - she can see that your hands bring good things, and are not so scary. You might try some clicker training, too - that can help get the bird engaged with you in a positive manner. (Check out Birdclick.com if you are interested in clicker training, and read their numerous files and articles, they have a lot of cool info). Take your time, you and Honey have a life time to get to know one another! -
Jenna not only wants to eat what we eat, she prefers it off MY plate. If I give her a plate of her own, she will ignore it and come after mine! hehehehe
-
Eclectus can definitely be LOUD Hehehehe But they are so beautiful and sociable . . . what a great pair Lucy and Merlin will be!
-
Greys do so love to help, don't they?
-
This won't help Bobby but it might help others whose birds get sick at some point . . . my vet recommends syringe feeding and spoon feeding greys from time to time to keep them comfortable with it, that way when you need to administer meds you don't have a scared bird or a struggle on your hands I hope Bobby is his normal adorable self soon!
-
Oh my gosh, poor little one, I am so glad you took her to the vet!
-
Eclectus ARE wonderful birds! I am envious, a wonderful grey AND an eclectus girl! ~sighs rapturously~

Oh, I do watch that thread, thanks! ~smiles~ Lots of good ideas there!

The reason for letting it sit for a day or two is to let the juice flavor soak into the pasta ~shrugs~ I have not tried it yet, but I probably will. Jenna gets LOTS of fresh stuff every day, this is just for a little variety.
-
I take Jenna outside in her travel cage and let her play in the fresh air; also the breeder kept her in an outdoor aviary for part of the day most days, so she's not scared of the outside. But I still can't get the harness on her LOL

Jenna had her first vet visit last Saturday and the vet suggested birdie lasagna, anybody ever tried it? Evidently you cook up some lasagna noodles and layer them with fresh or canned fruit, bird seed, cheese, veggies, sprouts, grains, and more fruit. Then you let it sit in the fridge for a couple of days, and the fruit flavor soaks into the noodles. Then you give your bird some and watch them dive in and make a mess! I haven't tried it yet but I did buy some lasagna noodles!
-
Please let us know what the vet says about your baby!

~grins~ We're working on that, Judy!
