  1. Carolina - I knew the "other" definition for knob. Wasn't really sure how to apply that to a recipe. Glad you got such a chuckle out of it Delma - I also use the shells whenever I make anything with a lot of eggs like egg salad or deviled eggs. I wash & crush them for the frozen mixture if I'm putting it together on the same day. I don't know how long they'd be safe to hold onto. They get the calcium from them without getting too much egg.
  2. You could try a kerchief or headband, but it might frighten him into other problem behavior. If it doesn't you'd be able to cover your earrings. He is really just pushing your buttons, which of course, is one of a fid's favorite past times. It might be good to just stand your ground & wait him out. Once you show him that you just aren't phased by his temper, he'll likely move on to the next fun thing. But he just has to do anything as long as he can get a rise out of you.
  3. Fresh air, exercise & adventure. Sounds like you had a great time! Good for you & Ziva!
  4. Poppy seeds are in a number of commercial bird seed mixes & ok for birds to eat. But poppy plants are on the toxic list. While we're on the subject, the same goes for hemp seed & for pretty much the same reason.
  5. Aw, gee! I love that pink, naked stage!!
  6. Great pics!! Glad you posted this so soon, because I've been excited to see Jaffa, too. Georgie has proven to be a very intelligent bird. I have no doubt that this morning's conversation was about pushing your buttons and his place in this flock. Hope you post tons & often. Congratulations! PS I was hoping you'd either name the baby Jaffa or Rio.
  7. So funny ! Aside from the grey would do every step of the OCD behavior several times each, I'd say you've got them down better than a lot of grey owners who have had them for years!
  8. Wow! I wish we could all let our birds be free flyers. To me, everything we try to do for them isn't enough to make up for taking that away. That first pic is my favorite.
  9. I didn't even know you microwave scrambled eggs! I'm going to have to try it. Sorry, but I really have to ask... What is a "knob" of butter?
  10. I think the very most'est experienced & best'est grey owners are the ones who will quite confidently say they will never know what their grey is going to think up next. They are just like living with a human on many levels. Constant change is the only constant. That's what makes owning one such an amazing experience.
  11. What a great set up! ! You guys with room to give over to the birds. My house is so small my poor guys are forced to swing from the lampshades for fun. What did you use for the ladder, which is very cool btw? I like that it's so big & colorful. Do your birds use the swing (also cool) on the floor? I don't know how to make that read the way I mean it... I'm surprised to see a swing that doesn't have any height to it. Would you move it for them to play on?
  12. I totally agree with Judy & GoDiego. Thanks for sharing such a positive story.
  13. Or the other way around?? Can you tell I have a little fear of big beaks? They are amazing birds & I really am in awe of them, though. It would be great if you could make your dream come true. Have you spent any time with this bird?
  14. I thought the same thing when I read this. Phenix has taken many, many temper tantrums & this sounds very familiar. LOL Remember, emotionally, they're little kids..."You won't let me stay out...? Well, just see if I'll come out next time you want me to be a nice little bird & step up!" I'm guessing Murphy wants some control, like letting him come out of his cage on his own, as suggested. Also, what you've said about his going to his cage for food? That's different from just going to his cage on his own, for no reason. For a long time I thought how lucky I was that my fids were very happy to play in their own cages sometimes, even when they could be out. But I've had a few birds by now & I suspect my luck can't actually be that good. Maybe it would help to re-invent Muphy's cage. It might help with this power struggle if you found a way to make it a place that was more fun.
  15. While I was trying to answer this, Belle & Phenix just had a little thing & distracted me. Phenix decided it would be fun to torture Belle, again. So I don't know what I did when I originally posted this. Anyway...

It was love at first sight for both of us, I think. She's my absolute sweetie. Like I said in that post about female ekkies, there's a lot said about them that Kura would have me believe is totally untrue.

Funny you didn't notice her before this because she's the only one that doesn't get upset when I take pics of her & her toys.

  16. Looks like your conservatory is a great bird room! Georgie's got everything a fid could want. It would be a bit of a shame to have to change things. You've got all the info on temp tolerances. Hopefully it won't be an issue. You might need to move the cages into the kitchen on random nights or during some colder snaps, like you said. Keep a thermometer in there & just see how it goes. Georgie has certainly grown up to be a happy, healthy looking grey. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to his new playmate.
  17. Jaffa is different. And Jaffa & Georgie sounds good. Can't wait to see pics.
  18. Wish I could answer that. But I live in New England & having tropical birds anywhere but in a house is just not an option. One important thing to avoid is drafts. But how cold do you think it would get? Then there's the little thing you slipped in there about getting a new Amazon...!?! Congratulations & What's that about?
  19. I love the idea that someone thought they were bad enough to rob the place & got chased off by a "little bird"! Think it will be karma if whoever it was gets caught while you can still see the damage because they'll never live it down. Kind of ironic though. Yesterday's topic was about a jailbird & today it's about this little crime stopper.
  20. For Halloween what about Warlock, Necromancer or Lestat? For smart people, Copernicus, Socrates or Aristotle? Just because Greys will be Greys, maybe Rascal or Daedalus?
  21. I also fear it may be because there's no way to guess a bird's age. When their most recent "forever" home is gone, so, often, is their past. A lot of our birds have unknowable pasts & few of us have any way to know if our bird were truly old. It makes me sad to think many, many of these birds will be forced to spent decades adjusting from one place to the next their whole lives. That there's no special consideration for the old ones. Phenix was likely wild caught. He was no youngster when I got him. Beyond that, I know 30 years of his life because most of it has been with me. I can only say he's at least 35, but I have absolutely no way to guess his true age.
  22. Very glad if this helped, Birdnut. But so far I've only identifed the problem, unfortunately. Kura feather barbers to feather her nest, even though she hasn't got anything that qualifies. This may be triggered by light, temperature &/or diet. Dave said something in another post about some birds' reaction to any available nesting materials. She's still my little sweetie, but I am seeing a difference in her behavior over the past week. She's less sedate, sort of twitchy (... no, really... I meant with a "t" !) more vocal & assertive. Last year I would have thought it was just the cooler weather. This year, I just don't know. So everyone feel free to post any hormonal parrot insights, please.
