Oh good that's a relief, well I just went on a big Internet search yesterday, I couldn't help thinking about the poor little guy all alone, I hope she was able to get hold of someone who can help her. Thank you!

Welcome to you Bruce from the West Coast nor cal. We are in the Capital City, me Charlie and Buddi. Well I woudn't worry too much about the birdies getting along, I have two greys who are both in love with me, I don't expect them to like one another. They mutually tolerate one another's presence but I think they secretly want to get rid of the other! Careful with the flying, they can run into all kinds of things on accident, mine have wings trimmed but Buddi tried to fly in the bathroom (didn't want a bath) and landed on a towel rack, the towel fell off and landed on her which brought down a magnifying mirror with it that was sitting on the counter next to it; the cord was draped over the towel rack so it pulled down the mirror with the towel. When the towel fell the mirror did too and Buddi narrowly escaped being crushed by the magnifying mirror. So, no flying here. She was so frightened, she started shaking and her knees gave out, I had to pick her up and comfort her in a few minutes, she was over it but it was too close!

Thats funny Christina! I have Buddi and Charlie, but I call Buddi my Miss Fit (feather plucker) and CHarlie's nickname is my little Nut Job (he calls me a Poop, he says: Joanne, you Poop! Then he says, Charlie the Poo, Charlie the Poo and then he laughs at himself) ... I have O'Boeilan for my Irish twist...does that get me any points on here? LOL Of course my English half would deduct points for that.

Thank you for this great forum. I love it. joanne for Buddi and Charlie

Hi Heather, LOL. Yes, I went to the guy with the mobile van, it didn't work out so well. So, I finally broke down and drove to Roseville, but its not so far from Citrus Heights. She is very good, I'm happy. She even called me on the phone personally with the results of the labs. We should meet up sometime. Wanna meet the kids? When are you going to the Bird shop for supplies? 729-5411.

Hi there, I found this cage on the Fish Fur and Feather website. It's located in Liverpool. It looks small enough fo r you to carry it out there but big enough to do the trick and it's affordable. Question is how big is the cage door. They do free deliveries in the UK over £50 and the Website address is: http://www.fishfurfeather.com/ferplast-max-parrot-cage-and-stand-brass-p-5110.html Ferplast - Max 6 Parrot Cage and Stand - Brass £151.30 A round traditional style brass barred parrot cage, complete with round stand. Supplied with 2 feeders/drinkers and 2 perches (one is a swing). Size 53 cm diameter x 165 cm height Size: 53 x 53 x 90cm. I also found this while surfing the web for UK parrot info; maybe you could call this man: Lost, Stolen & Found Birds http://www.parrotmag.com/lost_found.php John Hayward runs the National Theft Register. Call: 01869 325699 John Hayward compiles the Lost and Found Register nationwide and updates this site on a regular basis. Yes, most advice is to put a cage out there near the trees and put food in it. Can you at least buy a small travel cage, about 18" by 20" by 2 feet high? The bar spacing should be 1 inch apart. They usually cost about $100 USD. Then put it on a little portable table and put some pellets, mixed veggies and rice, and water in three food dishes. It's probably a pet that got loose and it will recognize a cage and food. With any luck it will begin to roost at the cage daily to get food and fresh water. You might catch it inside, and you can shut the door. Good luck!

Okay I will but do you know where to buy Palm Nuts? I am in northern Calif...
-
Hi heather, Yes, I am taking her to Dr. Joseph also! That's who put us on the Red Palm Oil. I am sooo glad. joanne
-
My female CAG Buddi did that once, I figured out it was my nail polish color. I had always worn red when I bought her and then I took it off about a month later. She had fallen in love with me wearing red nail polish and din't know it was me. I put the red nail polish back on and she got sooo happy. So, then I had to take it off a couple nails at a time and change the color slowly until she realized it was me, I let her watch me change the color.

** You should also be able to find it at Whole foods, but if you are in Canada, try to find an organic food store. Ask them to order it for you. Also there is a website for C&L Aviaries, they sell Polly Palm Oil...or call /Em them: LChare3208@AOL.COM C & L Aviaries 3920 Bristol Pike Bensalem, Pennsylvania 19020 215-638-4899 Fax: 215-638-1178 4 oz Palm Oil - $10.00 8 oz Palm Oil - $17.00 16 oz Palm Oil - $30.00 According to the website this Polly's Palm Oil is very good and comes from West Africa. Also from the website: How your bird likes to eat Polly's Palm Oil? About 1/4 teaspoon or 1/2 teaspoon of Palm Oil per day is about right for each bird. Natural red palm oil is one of the richest plant sources of Vitamin A, better than carrots or apricots. It's also a great source of Vitamin E. You put it in your bird's food dish, just dripped over whatever it is your bird is eating. - somtimes we give them sprouted sunflower seeds or sprouted wheat berries - or you can just get it spread on your bird's favorite seed mix, or dripped on bananas or grapes. - sometimes birds get it on their vegetables -- corn, carrots, brocolli, or even sprouted pinto or mung beans. Recipe: Congo Corn Bread 1+1/2 cups whole wheat flour(corn meal, or any flour, ground up pellets, etc.) 2 cups frozen or canned corn 1/4 cups red palm oil 1 cup milk (some prefer to use carrot juice, OJ with calcium, fruit or vegetable juice) 1 egg (include shell, optional) some birds don't like shells. In cusinart or blender, combine palm oil, milk egg(optional shell) and half the corn until smooth. Pour over whole wheat flour and remaining corn. Mix until almost completely blended. Spoon into 9x9x2 in. Pan and bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees until done. Recipe: Senegal Sweet Potatoes 1 Large sweet potato (baked or boiled) until soft. Put skin and all in cusinart and blend. Add 2 tablespoon ed Palm Oil. Shape into little balls and roll in sesame seeds or millet. Freeze and defrost as needed. Recipe: Monkey Mash 1 cup cooked brown rice 1 cup carrrots (grated or chopped) 1 cup yellow corn (frozen, fresh or canned) 1 cup sprouted chick peas 1 cup sprouted soy beans 1 cup chopped broccoli 1/2 cup sesame seeds 1/4-1/3 cup Red Palm Oil 1 teaspoon calcium (optional) Mix together and freeze in portions that will last for 2 days for your birds. How To Feed Polly's Palm Fruit Oil Feed about 1/4 teaspoon up to 1/2 teaspoon of palm fruit oil per day for each bird. Natural red palm oil is one of the richest plant sources of Vitamin A, better than carrots or apricots. It is also a great natural source of Vitamin E. It has been used safely and nutritiously in cooking for thousands of years. Soften the oil by holding it under hot running water for a few minutes, you can then pour it onto the spoon. You can also squeeze it out of the container into your measuring spoon or directly onto the food. Most Greys take to Palm Fruit Oil immediately. Put it on their favorite things or mix it with their other food. After a week or two, you may notice the tail feathers getting a brilliant red. Just why that seems to happen we don't understand, but it does seem to work. Your birds will take on a brilliant sheen. The oil is bright red, your bird will preen any spots off of themselves. Other things can be cleaned with soap and hot water. Palm Fruit Oil does not stain most fabrics.

Yes, My new veterinarian here in Calif. recommended it and sold me a bottle. Hers was pricey, and I know someone else with a CAG that buys it at Whole Foods. I was also told by a friend that is a native of Ghana in West Africa, that you can buy it at the ethnic grocery stores, the little hole in the wall groceries that sell international foods. He said they use it for cooking and as a soup base. My bird is doing well, its only been two weeks but i am seeing a difference in the plucking. Her feathers are coming in easier I think...

Hey there, I posted about a month ago about Buddi plucking. I took her to two vets, one suggested a depo provera hormone shot, and did a CBC and a yeast culture. The CBC was normal but the yeast culture came back positive and we tried a spray but that upset Buddi, she tried to pluck more. So after only 24 hours on that, I bathed her, and we returned the spray and got oral antibiotics but after day ten, she didn't want to come out of her cage. So, I stopped the meds and took her to a different vet, who ran a fecal gram stain, and said the fecal was fine. So she recommended Red Palm Oil, because in the wild the mainstay of the CAG diet is a fruit from the Oil Palm tree. It is a reddish oil with some pulp in it, and I bought it at the vet here in Roseville, Calif. and you can also buy it at Whole Foods, I know someone in Colorado who bought it there and also had good results. The vet told me that it takes about two weeks for it to be effective, and I put it on her food, and give her a little pancake or oatmeal with a dab of the palm oil in it, about peasize (its solidified) but you can warm it up and make it liquid and then use a dropper. Anyway, it's been two weeks now, and Buddi is not so itchy and her feathers are growing back in her neck. I also put a dab of the oil on her neck where she plucks, and it was absorbed and I think the feathers in that area are coming in easier, her skin is not so dry. So she is not plucking them out. I am crossing my fingers and giving showers twice a week. I recommend the Red Palm Oil. Gosh, if its the main part of their natural diet, I wonder where I can buy the fruit?

Well, yes and no. The band should have the breeders number on it, each breeder is supposed to be licensed, and they are issued a breeder number. So that goes on the band. It is my understanding those numbers on the little band do not contain a hatch date. One of my birds was hatched here locally, and the place is called the birdshop. Their bands all say BS ____ and a number. Anyway I agree on the micro chipping. It seems like whenever I go to the vet, my vet never says " Oh, gosh we need to scan your bird and see if it was reported stolen." So, even if someone found my bird, and took it to a vet sometime, it's unlikely that any veterinarian would scan it, and many don't have scanners. I guess you'd have to have alerted all the vets in your area to be on the lookout for your bird, and you should always have written down the numbers on your birds band, that way if you report it stolen, the number will be on the police report. You can tell local veterinarians the number and if someone brings a grey in, that is a new patient, they could check it for your birds band number.

I also use Poop Off. I buy it at the local Avian Parrot shop. Poop off is non toxic to birds, and it just melts away the poop. It comes in a spray bottle or one with a scrubber on the top. Then you just buy a big gallon refill bottle, and keep refilling the spray or scubber bottle. I just use paper towels after I let it soak a couple minutes, it wipes right off. I used to use simple green, because when I had dogs, I knew it was non toxic. So, I still use it to clean out the tray on the bottom, since the bird can't get to that part and it's less expensive than poop off, which I use on the perches and the cage bars, and the grate on the bottom of their cage that they walk on. I stay away from soaps that may have fragrances or residue. I also don't put hot water on wood perches, because wood is porous and can harbor bacteria, from water. Just my opinion. On the toys, I have put the rope toys and curly perches into the dishwasher all by themselves after soaking them in poop off. I don't use any dishwasher detergent, it's toxic for the birds. But the temperature gets so hot in there, it'll kill anything living in the rope toy. But then, you gotta get it totally dry b4 putting it back in the cage. So, if you have a dryer with a sweater or shoe rack that'll work great. I don't have one, so I have to put them outside to dry in the sun. Needless to say, all the rope perches are out of the cages right now, because of this problem.
