  1. I'm sure the chances aren't the best for breeding but I wouldn't want to risk it. I would feel horrible for killig eggs if it did happen. I had a cage that I kept my baby zebra finches in and two of the babies bonded and had eggs...lucky for me there was too many birds in the cage and they didn't care for the eggs. From everything I have read from you, your Greys are very much bonded with you, but I have heard very sad stories about parrots wanting nothing to do with their humans because they only wanted to be with the other parrot. I would hate for this to happen to Donmar55, and that is why I didn't think it was a good idea.
  2. Yep, not good if you want them to be tame and bond with you...plus, if they are not the same sex you could be looking at inbreed babies. Not good.
  3. {Feel-good-0002006E} LOL...well, your always on the same side of the debate fence as I am, so we stomp toes together...B) Yeah, I normally do...my dad is on vacation at his cabin in Georgia this week so I used yesterday to get the house nice and clean...well, part of the house anyways. I dusted, orginized, windex'd, all kinds of stuff.
  4. I just noticed something...Pryde's grey is right next to a computer and isn't trying to destroy it...I'm sure everyone is jealous! :laugh:
  5. Trina - I had the same problem with my Grey. When I had him flighted but still hand feeding he would dive bomb me every time I was making his food and would not stay where I put him for nothing. Every time he would fly off of where ever I had him I would grab him (if he wasn't already on me) and tell him very firmly "NO" and put him back where he was and turn my back to him. He fought me on this for a few days but he learned that him flying to me without me asking was only going to delay getting what he wanted (the feeding formula). I know there is the great debate on clipping wings, but it really does help to clip when you are training your bird. I did a "long clip" on mine so he can still fly across the house but won't get lift but he had been much, much easier to train this way. He still fly’s off his perch now and then because his favorite game is Marco-Polo...he will fly away when my back is turned and go hide. I'll call and he returns back in the Marco-polo fashion. I allow this because it is a lot if fun for the both of us…but the poop on the curtains I’m sure it something you want to stop.
  6. There was someone that posted here that had a 20 something Grey and just wanted the one question answered and then never showed up again.
  7. Mine is 5 months, and 3 weeks or so. He'll be 6 months on the 27th. I've had him sense he was 6 weeks...hand fed and weaned him myself, so he is like a human baby to me for sure.
  8. I agree. I wouldn't pull out the sunflower seeds all together...plus you haven't had him long so I wouldn't push anything on him just yet. Now, the avacados and oreos are a different story, that stuff could kill a parrot. Start eating with the bird like Laurie said...my grey will go nuts if I don't share what I'm eating with him.
  9. Well, with finches most of the time they are very skittish when someone walks up to the cage and start flying everywhere...you said this is a big problem for you. I would start spending more time with them and start by walking as close as you can without the birds going nuts. I'd get a folding chair and set it down as close as the birds are comfortable with and just sit and watch them for a while. Every day move a little bit closer in increments the birds don't notice. Before you know it you will be able to get close to the cage without all the birds going ape. That’s when you will be able to pick out the pairs for separation.
  10. Geez...I was still in High School when this was started!!! {Emotions-00020120}
  11. Oh man...I get busy with household chores and don't log on for a day and I miss the action! I've only been a member for a few weeks or so, but I've been doing some serious pounding of the keys! I love to speak my mind so I hope I haven’t stepped on to many toes.
  12. If you don't mine me asking...how much did it cost to make? All the stands I have looked into getting are all a pretty penny. Right now I use the shower perch all over the house and stick it to whatever window is in the room, but I've been thining about making something like you did.
  13. dblhelix - My Grey's nares and the skin around the eyes will get pinkish too and I think your right about that being a parrot form of blushing.
  14. No, I don't believe that is true. The eye of a parrot is pretty much the same as humans...only they are able to see a larger spectrum of light than we can. The white of the eye would only change to a pink color if there was infection or foreign body in/on the eyeball irritating it...just like with humans. Blushing occurs when blood rushes to the skin and is visible from underneath...just like if you just ran until you were completely out of breath on a hot day...your whole face turns red. The iris will change dilatations with mood, so that would change when a human mate came in the room.
  15. I read that parrots from the Amazon area...Macaws, Conures, Amazons...are very loud because they flock togeather often, but African parrots do not flock togeather making them quieter because they don't have to scream over the other breeds. The Sun I had was so loud that you could hear him outside. My Grey however you cannot. It has to be dead quiet in the house to hear him from the other rooms...unless he is screaming at his toys or the finches, but even that is nothing after you have heard a Sun. I give his chatter level a 3 and the screams a 4 1/2.<br><br>Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2007/09/17 05:13
  16. Dan is correct, the only votes that are counted are the votes that are made. If you don't vote for president in the election then your opintion does not effect the outcome. I didn't have anything better to do so I decided to do a recount to put it to rest once and for all...plus I'm from Florida and we have to recount all our elections anyways. I read through all the posts and counted everyone once that made it clear if they were pro or con cussing...there was a couple that were not clear so I didn't count them due to the "hanging chad" rule. 4 yes to bird cussing 9 no to bird cussing This is well over 50% of the "voters" and that is good enough for a political election. Now, just incase you bring up the Electorial College I have used Karma points as the votes for that seeing as though they are from the entire forum and not just this topic. Your side only has 30 total...I did not bother counting the "yes" side due to the fact that Danmcq has 151 alone. I'm going to say that not only lets the dead dog lie, but puts it in the ground as well.
  17. Those sound good...maybe too good :laugh: I have a HUGE Orange tree in my backyard. I'm not a big orange fan and the fruit off my tree isn't all that great for eating but it makes some of the best OJ...much much much better than the stuff you get at the store.
  18. LoveMyGreys is right...if you really can't get your baby to an avian vet, get him to a normal vet in the meantime...they might be able to at least buy you some time to get him to one.
  19. That does not sound good... Birds do not show their signs that they are sick until the condition is serious because in the wild the flock in many cases chase off the sick to keep the rest of the flock safe. If I were you I would find the nearest avian vet and get Bakbak there ASAP...even if it is a four hour drive. I have lost a finch in less than 8 hours after showing signs of possible illness. Where do you live...maybe there is someone here on the forum that is in your area that can point you to the right vet. P.S. - The administrators on this site are very strick about language...next time say poop.
  20. I'm not saying the bird is no good. I agree with what dblhelix said, she did not learn it on her own so she is not the one to blame. I do think that the owner is the UK equivalent to the U.S.'s white trash for teaching the bird to say some of the things it says. He did get some respect back from me when I watched the video of just him where he says that he has a home set up for her in the unfortunate case of his demise and that the person taking her is OK with her language…but how many people do that…not many I bet. When I say the cussing spoiled the pot I wasn't saying that the bird itself was trash, but that the bad overweights the good when it comes to her language. If I was going to get a rehomed bird and it had the personality I was looking for and we "hit it off" I would take it in a heart-beat regardless of a few cuss words. I don't think that a bird should be pushed to the side because of things like language but not everyone feels that way and that is why I do not agree that it's ok to teach your bird that stuff. Staggy, I have read all your posts...if you were to read my post CLEARLY I said that your FIRST post did not say one word about her other language...you only posted the video because of her cussing and that is why I think the argument that has now started that she say so much more is...well...frankly stupid. If you were posting a video for us to watch a loved bird I have seen Utube videos of a beatboxing Grey that I'm sure is very much loved as well and is just as entertaining if not more. As for it being funny, I did chuckle at a few of her vulgarities for the shock value but for the most part I didn't find it that funny. I would MUCH rather hear a bird ask for a nut cognitively then call someone a c*******er for not giving it a nut. That’s just my opinion and people don't have to agree with me but judging from how many posts on here are NOT PRO cussing, most people do.<br><br>Post edited by: BMustee, at: 2007/09/14 17:08
  21. I do not agree with what MrSpock wrote. The CAG's and TAG's are equal on their speaking abilities. The only speech differences that i have ever heard of is that the TAG will speak sooner than the CAG. TAG's average weaning age is a little sooner than a CAG so they get a little bit of a head start. I did read something saying that CAG's are a little more phobic than TAG's, and it is believed that is because the TAGs don't need as long to mature so they normally don't get force weaned and sent out before they are ready.
  22. Well, Flowers for Algernon is science fiction book about a retarded guy named Charlie Gordon that gets an experimental surgery to increase his intelligence level and is written as if it was his journal. His progress parallels that of Algernon, a laboratory mouse that had the surgery as well. I don't want to say much because I don't want to ruin anything if you decide to read it. There is a movie made from the book called Charly that won and Oscar for the lead role. The movie was just as good as the book for me, but because of the writing it seems like a more powerful story when you read it. I actually gave my copy to my sister and told her she HAD to read it. She hasn’t given it back to me yet so I think I might just go and get another copy ‘cause there are some storms a brewin’ in the Atlantic and I don’t want to make a mad rush to the store for water and a book the day before it hit. I really like The Shining too. I don't think I have seen the movie yet...I have seen the clips of the axe going the the door though. REDRUM...REDRUM!!!! I need to read the lord of the rings books. I've only read The Hobbit so far and that was a few years ago. The movies were great; my fav was the last one. The only thing I didn't like was at the end it kept fading to black and I would start to get up and then the picture would come back and there was another seen...it did that like 4 times!
  23. That bites. Are all the parks closed or just Disney? (that shows how much I get around in this state:laugh: ) I've been to Virginia once during the summer and it was pretty nice weather. It's funny, the closest I have seen to snow was when I was a kid and we had a none defrosting freezer so the ice would form on the sides...I would nail my brother and sister with snowballs made out of freezer shavings :evil: .
  24. It gets into the 20's and 30's in the middle of winter in my area of FL...but that is COLD when the rest of the year is 95+ with 100% humidity. That may not be Yukon cold but it chills to the bone if you were born and raised here. Why do you think people only come here in the winter...it's like the pits of hell here this time of year. {Feel-bad-00020063}
