1- Parrots, like most prey animals have eye's that are widely spaced, on either side of the head. This allows for a wide range of vision. In general parrots can see about as well at night as we do - which is not very well. Certainly not as well as nocturnal birds that hunt at night, such as the owl.I do have a dim night light,a plug in one which would be used as a night light for small children. 2- As for diet you need to introduce the fruit & veg as meals, not something left on the side,if your grey has the choice of seed or fruit/veg he is going to pick the seed.Try introducing new foods to your grey in the mornings, this is when they are at their hungriest.,There is a wealth of information in the bird food room, please read the various threads.. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/bird-food/53831-tips-for-getting-your-grey-to-eattry-new-foods.html http://www.greyforums.net/forums/bird-food/59809-complete-veggiefruit-list.html 3- you need to recognize when your bird is about to poop, pick him up & take him to where you want them to go,give him a command, go poop ! We have many previous threads on toilet training, have a search with the search facility at the top of the page.. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/african-grey/41481-toilet-training-.html#41493 4- not all greys bond to one person, but if they choose to theres not much you can do.Socialize your grey, let your girlfriend join in with the caring of your grey, let her give treats, get your grey out of the cage etc..perhaps Spence take a step back & let your girlfriend get more involved.

Good find Acappella

Is he having sufficient sleep at night ? ideally grey's need a good 10 hours sleep, but they do tend to have cat naps during the day,you will generally find they are more vocal in the morning's then tend to quiet down slightly & become more vocal again in the early evening. If he eating well & his poops are fine that's a god sigh, as long as he is not resting all fluffed up & looks lethargic .I personally believe that the weather does have an effect on them,i have 4 greys when it's rainy/grey outdoors they do seem to pick up on this, they are still vocal but i can see a big difference in them when the weather is sunny.Keep an eye on him & if you are still not happy then i would suggest a vets visit just to be sure.

Berna im pleased you had a happy outcome. We are aware of egg binding with our grey's & bigger breeds but we often overlook the fact that are small friends face the same plight. Please keep us informed on the egg's progress

Be sure to try him on cold food to Fal, you dont want him refusing cold food & depending on warm food.He needs to be exploring a variety of different textures & food at his young age,By doing this now you shouldnt have a fussy eater later on.

Yep thank you siobhan, you should find it in the freezer section of the supermarket.I often just have some in the freezer just in case i dont have enough fresh fruit in.you just need to let it thaw out before you use it.

Hi Malika, we need more inforamtion in order to advise you.The most important command i feel as a grey owner is to teach them to step up, that way you will have control.Hear is a link on how to teach that command... http://exoticpets.about.com/od/behavior/f/birdstepup.htm

Each week i will list a new recipe that you can try out at home for your grey.I would like members to PM me their favorite bird recipes ,i will then pick one to list. That member will get full recognition that they submitted the recipe with the added bonus of karma for taking the time to participate .Hopefully over time we can build up this thread & have our own Greyforum cook book. so i'll get you going for this week & please if you do manage the time to make the recipe let us all know if your grey enjoyed it Recipe 1 - Baked Potato Treat. 1 washed medium size potato Some chopped cooked broccoli 1tsp grated cheddar cheese natural apple/orange juice to add a little moisture Bake the potato in the oven until cooked Scoop out the potato & mash well Mash in the grated cheese & broccoli Add a few teaspoons of juice to moisten Put the mix back in to the skin cut in to quarters & serve warm.

Best place to place my baby's cage
lovemyGreys replied to KnLMedlin's topic in Welcome & Introduction Room
Hi KnLMedlin & Welcome, The cage needs to be located where the bird gets lots of interaction with you and the family.Ideally The cage should be against a wall to give the feeling of security. Situate the cage where it receives some natural light to keep your bird healthy. Avoid it being exposed directly near a window.Exposure to cooking fumes can be dangerous to the health of your grey. -
Apart from just chopping & serving your grey fruit in a bowl i thought it would be nice to have a thread where we could share & exchange each others ideas on how to make fruit more appealing to them. My personal favorite is to make a fruit smoothie. Take an assortment of your birds favorite fruit,i use .. apple - peeled & seeds removed banana Kiwi fruit - peeled Strawberries Pear - peeled 1 cup of natural fruit juice i tend to use cranberry juice Keep a 1/4 of the chopped fruit back. Just add to your food blender and blend until you have a paste consistency. Put the fruit you held back in their bowl & pour the smoothie juice over the top. If you make too much you can freeze it .. My four love it, it's quick & easy.so no excuse not to have a go Here is an alternative.. A selection of your birds favorite fruit. Keep back approx 1/4 of small fruit pieces. Blend the reminder in the blender. Tip the smoothie in to ice cube trays & drop the fruit pieces in. Freeze until Frozen. Now share your ideas please...
