Makena

Ok here is a picture we just took.. Does this look right to you??

I was watching Makena preen today and noticed something odd. I looked at his gland and it had what looked like a small pin feather sticking out of it. It was broken and red (filled with blood?). We toweled him to take a closer look at it and when we touched it he yelped in pain. Andrew and I were talking and realized we are a bit unsure of what a normal preen gland should look like. Does this sound normal or is there something wrong? Any advice would be appreciated!! Thanks!!

Awww... that is so sad! That happened on Oahu not too long ago.. It was all over the news here. Luckily because of all the media the bird was found and returned to it's owner. There is hope!!!

Haha, you guys! Actually I was standing outside of the shower and zoomed in. I just used my little point and shoot camera that has a video function (that's why it isn't the best quality). As for the humidity, the water wasn't hot. Makena likes cold showers

I know many of you have greys that hate the shower... Makena happens to love it! We have a regular shower rod hanging across the bath tub. When we take a shower we stick him up there and point the stream onto the bar. Sometimes he likes to bath himself and other times he just hangs out off to the side and falls asleep. Today he felt like a shower, so I filmed him. ENJOY :P

Wow... not sure if you are joking or not. If you are joking that is a really sick joke, and I would recommend retracting it. If you aren't, you really have some nerve coming on a forum full of people who love greys and openly saying you abuse your bird. I feel so sorry for your bird and wish I could rescue him from your so called home. He deserves better than that... He deserves someone who will love him. Would you break a dogs leg because he was jumping up on you????? Or your child's arm because he was tugging on your pant leg??? Oh wait... that's ok because a quick trip to the vet or doctor will fix that!! Everyone knows it is not ok to harm a creature. Whether is be an animal or person. If your vet really did tell you that then his business should be closed down. Plus didn't you think to use any common sense and realize beating your bird isn't ok?!?!?! If he told you to jump off a bridge would you??? What you are doing is sick and terrible and I have no respect for you. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Everyone is right, you just have to find out what he likes. It will take time. For Makena it is dried noodles or popcorn... He is obsessed with both! All I have to is rustle the noodle bag and he is ready to do anything I want him to :P Some people give their birds dairy, we choose not too as they can't digest it. They are lactose intolerant. It's your choice. We also don't give peanuts or peanut butter due to being paranoid about aflatoxins. Maybe we are a little tooooooo paranoid!! Beccy, Mak is the same way. He is completely uninterested in nuts...LOL! I offered him a pecan when I was making a pie and he didn't want any part of it!

Makena got peas and papaya... LOL! I tried giving him some other stuff but he didn't want any part of it. I don't really think he appreciated all the people that were in "his" condo.. .:laugh: :laugh: :laugh: Oh and Beccy, Fids = Feathered Kids

You are so right about the being cold thing. I would probably think twice about letting Makena have so many baths if it was cold all the time. Our house is always 80 degrees, so he never even shivers! He usually goes from being soaked to bone dry in about 30 minutes!
